Gnostic Rebelliousness...Today when we read the catalogue of the various forms of human exploitation and alienation, as presented in the most politically committed publications, one fact immediately becomes apparent: such are the limitations of ideology (the new mythology of our age) that this necessary denunciation, this indispensable catalogue of human injustice is solely concerned with its social and political aspects. In spite of what half a century of socialist experimentation has shown us, we persist in believing that a change limited exclusively to the politico-economic domain and to the means of production can resolve the problems that confront us. It seems a simple, obvious, and irrefutable fact that today, as in the time of the Gnostics, the alienation of man is global; it is also true that the economic, social, and political causes of alienation should be removed first. But far from ending there, the problem begins precisely at the moment when this first hurdle has been cleared. If I try to imagine people like Basilides, Valentinus or Carpocrates (Gnostics of whom we shall speak in detail later) living today, I see them as either totally detached from all political considerations, or, on the contrary, totally involved in the revolutionary struggle of our times (these two postures being, for these men, two identical forms of the same asceticism). I see them on the streets, handing out pamphlets signed The Proletariat of the Stars, but also taking the struggle further, to limits almost inconceivable nowadays (since for them a truly revolutionary combat could be nothing less than total), waging war against the very nature of our presence here on earth. Modifying the means of production, trans- forming the nature of economic exchanges and the distribution of wealth, without tying these changes in with an asceticism operating conjointly on man's mental structures, could achieve nothing more in their eyes than changing one master for another, and therefore one alienating factor for another, all the more dangerous in that people would believe they had abolished the causes of alienation.

Kaufman, the author of Germany Must Perish, was a Manhattan-born Jewish businessman who was also chairman of a group that called itself the "American Federation for Peace." The first edition of this slim volume was published in 1940 or early 1941. A second, 96-page edition, which sold for 25 cents, was published in 1941 by Argyle Press of Newark, New Jersey. Both editions were issued when the United States was still officially neutral, that is, before the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941, that brought the U.S. openly into World War II.        ZIONISM...Emancipation, secularism, the national renaissance of the peoples of Europe and modern Anti-Semitism -- these are the four highly powerful processes which deeply influenced the history of the Jews of the nineteenth century. Facing them, Jews -- as a collective entity, and also each individual Jew on his own -- were forced to define their Jewish identity and the extent of their commitment to the Jewish collective. This collective, standing on the brink of modern times, had two specially important characteristics: A. A religious perception of nationhood and a nationalistic perception of religion, and therefore, non-separation between religion and nationality -- the ancient tradition of nationalism.1 B. Existence outside the territory which was considered as the "Homeland", in the form of communities with autonomous leadership though dependent on external factors, as well. The four processes mentioned above caused a transformation of the communities from being official entities, universally recognized and obligatory, to a status of voluntary framework organizations. Jews found it increasingly possible to enter the society which surrounded them. Moreover, this was demanded of them, as was adoption of the collective identity of that surrounding. The status of the religious aspect of Jewishness weakened (and since Judaism is a national religion much of the nationalistic connection weakened, as well). Simultaneously, however, Jews met with renewed and reinforced phenomena of rejection, and watched admiringly the fascinating processes of national renaissance of other ancient peoples (such as the Greeks and Italians). Some of those Jews who had strayed far from religious belief were attracted to a new kind of Jewish national consciousness. This developed in a number of forms -- one of which was Zionism. Zionism sought not only a refuge from persecution but also a base upon which to re-construct Jewish national identity, specifically in Eretz Yisrael, the homeland of the people in ancient times, the land to which Jewish tradition throughout its generations was so closely related and therefore, the only place that the Jewish people could be properly rebuilt. Most of the founders, leaders and activists of Zionism were non-religious and even anti-religious. Zionism as an idea and those who made it a reality, and the state of Israel, its ultimate creation, were and are today, poised before the dilemma of their connection to the Jewish religion, which is the source of Jewish nationalism. The Murder Of Rudolf Hess At The Spandau Prison 1987...[From Abdullah Melaouhi's Statement]....When I entered the summerhouse, the scene was like a wrestling match had taken place; the entire place was in confusion. The body of Mr Hess was lying on the floor of the summerhouse, apparently lifeless. Near to his body stood two soldiers dressed in US Army uniforms. I had never seen either soldier before. I also saw an American guard, whom I knew as a Mr Tony Jordan. There was no cable anywhere near the body of Mr Hess; as I have said, the only cable was attached to the fallen lamp which was still plugged into the wall..... A Gnostic Childhood...Growing Up During WWII And In Post War Berlin... Allied War Crimes And Atrocities---Apart from the moral questions involved, were the atomic bombings militarily necessary? By any rational yardstick, they were not. Japan already had been defeated militarily by June 1945. Almost nothing was left of the once mighty Imperial Navy, and Japan's air force had been all but totally destroyed. Against only token opposition, American war planes ranged at will over the country, and US bombers rained down devastation on her cities, steadily reducing them to rubble. On the night of March 9-10, 1945, a wave of 300 American bombers struck Tokyo, killing 100,000 people. Dropping nearly 1,700 tons of bombs, the war planes ravaged much of the capital city, completely burning out 16 square miles and destroying a quarter of a million structures. A million residents were left homeless. On May 23, eleven weeks later, came the greatest air raid of the Pacific War, when 520 giant B-29 "Superfortress" bombers unleashed 4,500 tons of incendiary bombs on the heart of the already battered Japanese capital. Generating gale-force winds, the exploding incendiaries obliterated Tokyo's commercial center and railway yards, and consumed the Ginza entertainment district. Two days later, on May 25, a second strike of 502 "Superfortress" planes roared low over Tokyo, raining down some 4,000 tons of explosives. Together these two B-29 raids destroyed 56 square miles of the Japanese capital. Even before the Hiroshima attack, American air force General Curtis LeMay boasted that American bombers were "driving them [Japanese] back to the stone age." Henry H. ("Hap") Arnold, commanding General of the Army air forces, declared in his 1949 memoirs: "It always appeared to us, atomic bomb or no atomic bomb, the Japanese were already on the verge of collapse." This was confirmed by former Japanese prime minister Fumimaro Konoye, who said: "Fundamentally, the thing that brought about the determination to make peace was the prolonged bombing by the B-29s." It was only after the war that the American public learned about Japan's efforts to bring the conflict to an end. Chicago Tribune reporter Walter Trohan, for example, was obliged by wartime censorship to withhold for seven months one of the most important stories of the war. In an article that finally appeared August 19, 1945, on the front pages of the Chicago Tribune and the Washington Times-Herald, Trohan revealed that on January 20, 1945, two days prior to his departure for the Yalta meeting with Stalin and Churchill, President Roosevelt received a 40-page memorandum from General Douglas MacArthur outlining five separate surrender overtures from high-level Japanese officials. (The complete text of Trohan's article is in the Winter 1985-86 Journal, pp. 508-512.) As time went on it all became much clearer to me. I also realized that people are not always what they seem. When my level of awareness rose to a certain point I had to write about it.
