A person called Daryl Bradford Smith has posted malicious slander about me on his website "The French Connection." This is more of the same slander that he began spreading after I visited him in November 2005. Smith has only seen me once and does not know very much about me, but he is clearly dedicated to defaming me.  This is clearly his attempt to assassinate my character. 

In his "final message" about me, Smith continues to spread the same vicious lies about me and my family. His theatrical rant of September 5 seems to be a clear reaction to my posting a photo of me with Smith taken before I left his home in rural France. Smith's outrageous lies about me and our visit are clearly meant only to defame and discredit me as a 9-11 researcher and writer.  This is typical behavior of Smith who has tried to discredit other serious 9-11 researchers like Dr. Steven E. Jones.

Smith claims that he has worked with me for years and that I have been part of his team with Eric Hufschmid. This is completely false. I am an independent journalist and he and Eric have only used my work to promote their website since the fall of 2006. The French Connection is just one of many websites that have posted my articles.

I have been posting my articles on Rumor Mill News for years and have spoken on many radio shows long before Smith and Hufschmid started their website. Since the summer of 2006, they have tried to make it appear as if I have been working exclusively with them, which has never been the case.

Because Smith's recent emotional "rant" was laden with malicious lies concerning my visit to his house in November 2005, I am compelled to provide my account of that visit. 

I first heard of the person known as "Daryl Bradford Smith" when I was interviewed for his radio show called "The French Connection" on the Genesis Communications Network (GCN). I don't recall when I first spoke on his show but it was certainly many months before September 2005, which is when he now says he first heard of me.

Smith started calling us at our home near Chicago in early 2005. This led to a show that he did with Helje about the sinking of Estonia when he was with GCN. For the record, he did a second show with Helje about Estonia in the spring of 2006, when we were in Provo visiting Dr. Steven E. Jones.

The GCN was founded by John Stadtmiller, who would later go on to found the Republic Broadcasting Network. How Stadtmiller and GCN found Smith in rural France, I don't know. As he said on his GCN radio show of January 3, 2006, he is "living out here in the middle of nowhere." Smith's credentials and background are both very murky.

At the request of Eric Hufschmid, I visited Smith in November 2005 after the Axis for Peace conference in Brussels where I was a panelist and speaker. My speech included the discovery of molten metal in the World Trade Center and the research being done by Dr. Steven E. Jones of Brigham Young University.

Smith first invited us to visit in the spring of 2005. He had repeatedly invited us to visit through my wife, Helje. He had led us to believe that he lived in a nice French country house "full of antiques." He even told her that some of the moving people had "knicked" some of his antiques. As we discovered, his house is quite a bit less grand than he had led us to expect.

When we were in Brussels for the Axis for Peace conference, Smith told me that he lived just south of Paris. When I checked the map and into taking the train, however, I found that it would cost about $400 to make the trip one-way to the nearest town to Smith's place, which would not have been at all close. With the high price and bad connections of the French rail system, and the fact that the national rail workers were going on strike, I decided not to make the trip.

I called Smith and Eric Hufschmid and told them that I would not be making the trip.

Both Hufschmid and Smith were quite unhappy to hear this and Hufschmid offered to send me money to pay for the trip. Due to the rail strike and Smith's remote location, I decided that to make the trip we would have to take a detour and try to get as close as possible using the excellent German rail system and then rent a car.

We used the "Beautiful Weekend" pass on the German rail network, which allows an entire family to travel for 24 hours for only $30. Using the "Schoenes Wochenende" pass we traveled to Switzerland. From Geneva, where we lived in a large and nicely furnished apartment, I rented an Avis car to drive west over the mountains to Smith's house.

Smith says that we came in a very large and fancy BMW-type car, but, in fact, it was only a simple Opel, the smallest car that would be suitable for our trip that Avis had available.

For Thanksgiving, we drove across France to the small village where Smith lived. The drive from Geneva took about 10 hours each way. We arrived in the afternoon and had Thanksgiving dinner with him and his wife.

The old farmhouse where he lived had been abandoned property and he was doing some renovation to try and make it livable. He showed me some upstairs space where he had hung some drywall. He asked me if I would be able to stick around to help him with his renovation project. This indicates that he didn't dislike me as much as he now says he did upon meeting me.

The house was very small and uncomfortable and not at all suitable for children to live in. It was a far cry from what he had led us to expect. It was quite cold and primitive and we didn't want to subject our children to such dismal conditions. We had planned to stay one night and left the next day after breakfast and a walk. We stayed in a pleasant hotel in Moulins, about half-way from Geneva, on the way to and from Smith's house. I don't recall the name of his village.

While Smith's wife, Pascal, was very pleasant and hospitable, he was rather suspicious and withdrawn. Suddenly, during the dinner, he turned to us and asked: "Why did you really come?" in a distinctly unpleasant tone. We reminded him that he was the one who had invited us.

He was not at all interested in talking with me. I had just spent weeks in Worms and Mannheim covering the trial of Ernst Zundel. He had no interest in that or any other subject that I had written about. He was quite different from the person I had expected him to be.

We brought the best wine, chocolate, and marmelade we could find for the Thanksgiving dinner. Smith, according to Eric Hufschmid, has some liver disease, something like cirrhosis of the liver, although we were not aware of this prior to our visit. For that reason, he was not able to enjoy the fine wine we had brought.

His charming wife, Pascal, had been a teacher of "hip-hop" street dance, she said. She was very glad to have some wine with us.

Pascal and Smith had one large and two small dogs. My daughter, who loves animals, enjoyed playing with them. We got two amazing photos of her holding one of the dogs. These photos show an incredible aura around them.

Pascal told me that her family was in Lyon and I recall thinking that Pascal appeared to be of North African ancestry. France has millions of ethnic North Africans from its former colonies of Algeria, Tunisia, etc. She certainly enjoyed meeting us and being with our children, who have attended European schools and been home-schooled. Helje has a degree in teaching and I have worked as a teacher in the International School in Stockholm.

The Thanksgiving meal was excellent and my children distinctly recall having had second portions. My daughter still remembers enjoying "the crunchy part."

During the visit, Helje asked Daryl if he had been to Vietnam. He said that he was too young for that. A little later he asked Helje, rather inquisitively, "Who told you I was in the military?"

Helje said that he just reminded her of somebody she knew who had been in Vietnam.

Daryl exhibited an unexpected anti-German attitude. We had just come from Germany, where we had lived for two years and where our children had gone to school. When I told Smith about the German trains and the high standard of construction and living in Germany, he showed animosity toward anything German.

He insisted that everything was better in France, which we know very well is not the case. French windows, for example, are often leaky and single-pane glass. German windows, on the other hand, are state of the art and energy efficient no matter where you look.

Contrary to what he says in his latest rant, I did not stand up with wine spilling from my mouth and sing the German national anthem or raise a Nazi salute. This is absurd fiction.

This is merely meant to defame me, as are his comments that I was drunk. This is pure fiction. Defaming me as a wild drunk is exactly what Michael Piper has tried to do as did the Hoffman Estates police and the prosecution during my trial.

During the evening, Smith claimed that he had the exact same birthdate as I, but I remember that he was off by a year in age. Furthermore, he didn't make much of the amazing coincidence that we should have the exact same birthday. How odd.

In the spring of 2005, Daryl had talked to Helje about the "upcoming epidemic" of Bird Flu, and that this was the reason he had moved to rural France.

"Bird Flu will kill most of the world's population," he told her.

When we visited him, he showed us the large amounts of Tamiflu he had stocked in his house. We noticed, however, that there were free-roaming geese living in the yard. I photographed one that was not more than 20 feet from his front door.

Early in the morning, after a rather sleepless night, we went to the kitchen and had breakfast with Pascal. Smith was nowhere to be seen but came out after we had already finished eating. He appeared to be sleepy and grouchy and excused himself saying that he has "liver problems" that don't let him sleep.

After breakfast, all of us except Daryl went on a walk with Pascal to see some fields nearby with horses.

It was quite damp and chilly and the children, whose feet were getting cold and who have seen plenty of horses in North Dakota, decided that they wanted to go back to the house. It had started to rain by the time they got there but Smith wouldn't let them in. When we returned from our walk with Pascal, we found the kids waiting outside by the door - shivering.

This seemed rather odd, we thought. Why would Smith refuse to let the kids in the house? Did he have some communications that he needed to make in privacy? What kind of host would lock out a 10- and a 7-year-old child and leave them out in the cold?

After our visit on Thanksgiving 2005, Smith spread malicious slander about me and my family to people he knew through the Internet. He stopped communicating altogether with us after our visit. Smith's malicious slander even found its way to the courtroom where I was on trial last spring.

Rather than discussing the real issues, such as 9-11 or the corrupt legal system that prosecuted me, Smith and Eric Hufschmid have tried to make an issue out of me. Hufschmid has known all along that my family and I were fine. There was no need to raise the alarm that we had been kidnapped or killed. This is utter fiction that only Smith and Hufschmid have promoted. Unfortunately, many people believe the alarming and slanderous lies of Smith.

Why is Smith so antagonistic towards me and those who have helped me during my trial? Why has he spread malicious slander about me since he met me in November 2005? He now says that he had extreme animosity toward me from the minute he met me. Why would I trust him with anything?

Comment about Disinformation Spread by Daryl B. Smith & Eric Hufschmid

I am making this comment to explain why I have not been a guest on the Internet "radio show" produced by Eric for "The French Connection" website of Mr. Smith.

The main reason that I cannot discuss my research and articles on the "radio" show of Smith is because the "French Connection" show and website have shown a tendency to provoke and promote violence. Obviously, I cannot allow myself to be associated with people that use provocative language and advocate the use of violence.

Discussing my research and articles is all that Hufschmid and "The French Connection" have ever wanted from me in the past. All the research and writing in my articles have been done solely by me.

Hufschmid and Smith gladly use the fruits of my years of labor and research to bring attention to their website and then sabotage my efforts to fund my research at the same time. Who would do something like that?

At the conclusion of my trial in June, I had the choice to either leave the Chicago area or face sentencing from the same judge who presided over my seriously flawed trial. I would have shown very poor judgment and only increased the already intolerable anxiety and agony of my family to have waited around for the other shoe to drop and been dragged off to Cook County Jail.

Despite the fact that Eric knows all of this, he has continued to post alarming comments on "The French Connection" that the Bollyn family is MIA, that we have been kidnapped or killed, and other nonsense of that nature.

Despite numerous emails and telephone calls to Eric, he and Smith have used their "French Connection" website to spread false news and alarm about me and my family. The website today, for example, has these comments:

"It has been months since anybody has seen the Bollyn family. If they are alive, where are they? How do they buy food? Do their children go to school? Do they pay rent? Why are they hiding from everybody?"

Do we know where Smith is or where his kids go to school, or whether he pays rent? Why are they asking these things about me? Why are they raising these doubts about me and my family?

At the end of each of my articles that they posted on their website, Hufschmid and Smith have posted this very unhelpful note despite my repeated appeals to remove it:

"Important: Christopher Bollyn and his famly (sic) is (sic) MIA.

"Please pass links to his articles, and try to find more people to join us in our struggle to expose corruption. Don't let "them" get all of us! Show some concern!"

This "Important note" at the bottom of each article has effectively sabotaged my efforts to raise funds. Hufschmid and Smith are using my articles and then spitting on me by spreading false news and alarm about me and my family.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak on a radio show in Salt Lake City for an hour with Dale Williams, who was filling in for Barbara Jean on the "Born on the 4th of July" show on K-TALK (KTKK). It was a great opportunity to dispell some of these false rumors.

Most importantly, Hufschmid and Smith began sabotaging my legal defense fund immediately after my trial. This prevented me from raising the funds required to obtain the court transcripts that would reveal the lies of the police and malicious prosecution that I had been subjected to. It also nipped my attempts to appeal the guilty verdict in the bud.

Instead, Hufschmid and Smith launched a vicious defamation campaign against Dr. Linda Shelton, an independent court observer who had attended the last two days of my trial. Why would they do that? Hufschmid and Smith urge the reader to show "concern" and pretend to be concerned for my family's welfare and safety but they say that they don't know what happens if you donate to me or buy my book!

This clearly shows that they are more interested in control than showing any "concern" for my well being or that of my family.

This is not the kind of help I need or want.

Bollyn Statement on the Importance of Non-Violence

A physical therapist examined my right arm last week and determined that I am still unable to extend it fully, one full year after my right elbow was fractured in an act of police brutality. I cannot straighten my arm and suffer pain in the elbow because it was broken by three armed thugs of the Hoffman Estates police department one year ago on 15 August 2006.

The three "tactical officers" who were involved in breaking my right elbow and TASERing me while I was held down and restrained are: Michael Barber, Timothy Stoy, and Darin Felgenhauer. I hold these men and their supervising officers fully accountable for the injury and suffering they have inflicted on my family.

In my frustrated attempt to obtain justice through the court for the brutal police assault that I and my family suffered, I discovered that there is a host of characters involved in supporting the extremely corrupt judicial system in Cook County (Chicago). From the judge on down, there are scores of people who support this terribly flawed system of justice that only promotes injustice. This includes the prosecuting and defense attorneys, the office of the clerk, the county sheriff and police departments within the county.

I am a non-violent person who is the victim of police brutality. I still cannot straighten my right arm. I have no idea what internal injuries I have suffered as a result of the "drive stun" of 50,000 volts that was delivered to my lower back as I was held down by two "peace officers" of the Hoffman Estates police department.

I do know that Officer Tim Stoy knelt with his full body weight on my right temple (a fact which Felgenhauer testified to in court) for about two minutes and that this non-police lethal hold could have very easily caused brain damage and death.

TORTURE BY TASER

I also know that Officer Michael Barber conspired, prepared, and delivered the "drive stun" from his TASER weapon while he and Stoy held me down with my left hand cuffed behind my back and my right arm trapped beneath my body. Because I was not resisting in any way and was fully restrained, Barber's TASERing of me can only be considered as torture with the intent to injure or kill.

I hold these men, and their superiors, fully accountable, and will do what I can to obtain justice. But would I do such a thing to them if our positions were reversed or if I had the chance for revenge? Would I inflict violence or torture on them?

No. I would not because I don't use violence. I see violence and torture as uncivilized and un-Christian.

I saw the corrupt officers who tortured me and broke my arm giving each other "high fives" when I went to court the first time. I didn't know then that the police in Chicago and Cook County always get off. Torture has been used by the police in Chicago for decades and according to a series of articles in the Chicago Reader, the police involved in such torture have never been held accountable for the lies they tell in court.

I listened how Stoy and Barber told bold-faced lies on the stand. They said they smelled alcohol on my breath from 10 feet away, for example, and that I clenched my fists and threatened the three armed and armor-clad officers. They said I then resisted their arrest, flailed my arms, and did three push-ups with two men on top of me.

Both Stoy and Barber told the court that the other guy had called out "TASER" before the TASER shock was delivered. Logic dictates that either both men are either both lying or one is lying and the other has forgotten what he did that day.

I, for that matter, know that both men are lying because I didn't hear either man on top of me say anything before I felt a square object placed against my lower back prior to the delivery of the electrocution-type shock. One was above my head and the other was on top of my back so I would have heard if either of them had said "TASER, TASER, TASER," as Barber said Stoy shouted.

Neither one of them said anything - not one damn word.

Against the protest of my attorneys, Judge Hyman Riebman allowed Barber to give false testimony about the effects of a "drive stun" TASER shock.

Barber, who is not an expert on the effects of TASER shock, told the court that such a 50,000 volt shock only affects an area of about 1 square inch and has only the power of a small Christmas light. This is utter nonsense but Riebman allowed Barber to speak as an expert on the effects of TASERing.

The police lies only continued and grew as the prosecution said that I had called 911 in order to start a fight, ignoring the fact that the tactical team had interfered with the 911 response and taken over the call from the uniformed officer who had been dispatched to my house. If a uniformed officer had responded to my non-emergency call there obviously would have been no cause for any alarm.

Is violence an answer to any of the problems that plague the police?

No. I do not support violence as a solution and never have. I am a journalist and a writer, not a provocateur. I am convinced that the violence that I suffered in August 2006 was inflicted on me because of my journalism. The evidence clearly indicates that the Hoffman Estates police conspired to use violence on me long before the three-man "tactical unit" arrived at my house. Although the actions of Barber, Stoy, and Felgenhauerare clearly reprehensible, and I and my family have suffered immensely as a result of their criminal actions, I would not wish any violence upon them.

Violence does not solve anything and only results in more pain and suffering. I say this because I am very concerned with the discussion of violence that I see on the Iamthewitness. com website. This website is run by Eric Hufschmid and an Internet radio host known as Daryl B. Smith, who lives in France.

"We may have to kill all of them."

In a recent article entitled "Battle Plan," the website uses language that implies the use of violence to "eliminate our infestation of parasites." While I certainly agree with the need to remove the sources of corruption of our financial, political, and judicial systems, I completely disagree with the notion that violence is the solution to the problem.

It is counter-productive, extremely foolish, and irresponsible for Hufschmid and Smith to say things like this on their website:

"Alex Jones and other Zionist Deniers often imply that the only way to stop "them" is with violence. We should consider the possibility that he is telling us the truth. The Rothschilds, Oppenheimers, Chertoffs, and everybody else in this Zionist crime network may never give up. We may have to kill all of them."

"If violence erupts, the FBI and police may have to be our first targets."

I would hope that Eric Hufschmid would have the intelligence and common sense not to say such things. Doesn't he realize what he asking for by saying such things? Perhaps Eric should read what happened to Matt Hale. He has been imprisoned for 40 years for simply being the inspiration for a killer of a judge's family in Chicago.

This language could easily be seen as "hate speech" or inciting violence. With comments like these Hufschmid and Smith are going out on very thin ice - legally. This is nowhere I would want to go. I would strongly urge them to remove such comments and stick to the moral high ground. Such violent language marginalizes them - and their message. Don't they see that?

Hufschmid urges me to speak on his Internet radio show but I simply cannot and would not want be seen as supporting such calls for violence. I can not associate myself with people who are seen as supporting violence. It is that simple.

It is against my nature to promote violence. Furthermore, it is extremely unwise and counter-productive to do so.

Has violence solved anything in Palestine and Iraq? Has violence advanced any peace anywhere - ever? Have the Israelis achieved anything with all their killing and weapons? Has the American and British use of force in Iraq brought democracy, peace, or prosperity to that beleagured nation?

No, no, no.

Armed resistance, on the other hand, such as that of the Hezbollah in south Lebanon, is the legally and morally justified resistance to an armed invasion. The Intifadah of Palestine is fully justified as the legal resistance to the illegal occupation of Palestinian land. These resistance movements are defensive, essential, and legal and I certainly would not condemn them.

Dear Chris and Helje,

I personally feel you are completely justified in staying away.  The system can easily grind you up and spit you out.  Why should you be obligated to appeal for justice to an unjust system?  (I think in your case you are just as free to flee the system as you would be if you were convicted unjustly in Communist China.)  Many have tried and many have gone down in flames.

You need not fight an unjust system on its unjust terms.  Within reasonable God given limits you are free to set your own terms when faced with institutionalized injustice.  (Let's face it.  Some people – and some of them may be very well intentioned – who might be begging you to come back to face the system are not in your shoes.  Neither they, nor their families, are facing the same risk and very heavy undertaking you and your family are.)

Your forte is exposing evil via the alternative media including your own website.  More power to you, recognizing that all power comes from God.  In a sense you are like a guerrilla fighter who must adopt certain alternative media guerrilla tactics to expose the evil persons, entities, and agenda which are strangling this world. 

Just always stay close to the good Lord and pray that He always protect you and your dear family.  (And remember that God does not demand success, but he does demand our faithfulness.)  By staying away from the court process you may be closing off certain options, but at the same time you are keeping others open that might otherwise be terminated and even terminated with extreme prejudice!

By choosing your terms of warfare against an unjust system I believe you have an excellent chance of inspiring many and being a real leader in the on-going battle for truth and justice which in an upside down world are in rather short commodity.

If you always pray with humility for proper discernment and cooperate with God's grace in submitting to it I trust that Our Lord will guide you in His ways of truth, goodness, and beauty.

Beware of ever entering into a false peace with the "father of lies and a murderer from the beginning."  Pray for courage and the true peace which comes only from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in union with God the Father and God the Holy Ghost.

My prayers and those of my wife continue on for both of you and your children.  Again – many, many thanks Christopher for having the courage to be and continue to be a "Journalist Sans Frontieres" whatever the price for same may entail.  God's truth has no boundaries.

Dear Christopher and family,

I continue to pray for you all and spread information to people I know concerning our struggles.  I have also recently read about the Masonic/Judeo control of the courts, and the information I have gleaned unfortunately seems to blend right into your struggle.

I send this brief message to remind Christopher that he struggles on behalf of the spirit of Love that is represented by Christ.  Regardless of the future, no matter if you prevail, or your persecution continues, you are a representative of unconditional love to the world, especially to people who have awakened to the awful condition our planet is in at this stage in history.

Thank you for your bravery.  We read the article written by Dr. Linda Shelton, and it made us angry and frustrated.  Those who have not experienced injustice cannot imagine how you must have felt, being defamed in a court of alleged law, and found guilty by naive and brainwashed peers.  It was a profoundly sad day in American history.

Christopher, please do not give up, hope against hope, and like Christ accept whatever future God has in mind for you.  This is easy for me to say as I am not facing imprisonment, and I hope my words are encouraging and not offensive.  I pray that a miracle occurs, that your appeal can be financed and carried out successfully. 

Please know that your writing and research has enlightened many, and your strong example has inspired people to work harder at finding hidden truths.

Dear Christopher and Family,

I have been following this debacle; this frightful, harrowing ordeal that your family has been going through.  I was astounded, but not surprised at the outcome, knowing how the majority of the Illinois police, officials, judges, etc., are unfortunately corrupt.  

I know.  I was born in Chicago in the early 50's and raised in the suburbs  (which was wonderful for a kid at that time). In my late teens, I high-tailed it out of there as quickly as I could.  My sensitivities and sensibilities could not let me remain in a place that seemed so overbearing and  negatively controlled, even then!  Apparently, things haven't improved.  How pitifully pathetic.

I am so saddened for all of you, but I believe that the truth will out eventually, in the hopefully, not too-distant future.

I have been, and will continue to pray for the health and safety of you and all of your loved ones.  I believe in you and your work, Christopher, (which I have followed for years over the internet). You are a beacon of truth and strength and perseverance, despite the adversity.

Please remain strong in knowing that there are A LOT of others who think as you do, and as such, will never give credence to those who are less evolved, compassionless, and "spiritually" mind-controlled.

The Bollyn Trial - Truth Telling vs. Plea Bargain

A Lebanese Druze friend of mine told me that the lie is the mother of all sins because the lie allows all other sins and crimes to be committed.

To be falsely accused of crimes and forced to defend oneself against false testimony in court is a very challenging and stressful position for anyone. Seeing how the evidence that could exonerate me has been destroyed or withheld and how my accusers have crafted lies to use against me, I often feel quite discouraged and depressed about trying to fight for the truth in a trial.

The process is extremely costly and stressful, as I now realize, and something most people are simply unable or unwilling to go through. Most criminal cases in the United States are settled in a compromise plea bargain in which the defendant accepts some guilt and a reduced penalty even if he or she is completely innocent.

I don't want to accept a plea bargain because I am innocent - all I did was call 911 for help. I know that I did not assault, or intend to assault anyone when I was unexpectedly tackled and TASERed by plainclothed men in body armor in my front yard. There was no arrest prior to their assault and there was no resistance when they pinned me down and TASERed me. I did not commit the crimes I am accused of: aggravated assault and resisting a peace officer.

While I am accused of resisting a peace officer, the men who came to my house were not uniformed and did not identify themselves to me as Hoffman Estates police working undercover. They were loitering around in an unmarked car.

When I see the wall of lies I am facing, I often feel that it is quite hopeless to try and fight these charges. I know that I have many supporters who want me to succeed in this case and who have donated to help in this effort. I am very grateful for their support and know that without them I could not challenge these trumped-up charges.

But doubts and gnawing fears are never far away and I often ask myself if it is really worth the struggle. As Epictetus said: "It is not death or hardship that is a fearful thing, but the fear of death and hardship."

Today, I received a most inspiring letter from a supporter who tells me why I must fight these charges. This letter gives me substantial spiritual encouragement in this legal battle I face. While the letter is addressed to me, its universal message is for anyone who is forced, as I am, to defend him or herself against false accusations.

Dear Chris,

I appreciate L.'s heartfelt letter to you of April 30, 2007, and the concern that it evinces for your family. I especially appreciate, however, its last two paragraphs. They illuminate the true mettle of her soul and show forth a Woman who is intent on plumbing the depths of injustice for the sake (some day) of (more) justice for us all (as well as for herself).

One could argue that the issue of a plea bargain is a political issue, but, I prefer to think of it fundamentally as a moral and, ultimately, as a spiritual issue. (All Bible quotes below are from the KJV translation.)

On the one hand, God requires us to "submit [our]selves to every ordinance of man [which was designed] for the Lord's sake [and/or which promotes His good purposes]" (I Peter 2:13a), to "confess …our faults" (James 5:16) when we violate such ordinances (as well as God’s own Laws and precepts), and to “agree with [our] adversary quickly whiles [we] are[e] in the way with him, lest at any time [he] deliver [us] to the judge and the judge deliver [us] to the officer, and [we] be cast into prison” (Matthew 5:25).

There are some things, however, that we must do in order to determine whether we have violated any such an “ordinance of man.” Firstly, we must not just presume that we are innocent when we are not, for God hates presumption (see Numbers 15:30; Psalm 19:13; II Peter 2:10).

Secondly, we must earnestly have our souls “examined” by God through prayer (see Psalm 26:2; 139:23-24), by our own deep soul-searching (see I Corinthians 11:28a; II Corinthians 13:5), and by the counsel or admonitions of our friends and/or enemies (see Proverbs 27:6,17; I Corinthians 9:3).

And thirdly, if we survive all of this examination and come out with a well-informed, tested, and yet still good conscience (see Acts 24:16; Romans 2:15; 9:1;13:5; II Corinthians 1:12; 4:2; I Timothy 1:5,19; Titus 1:15; Hebrews 9:14; 13:18; I Peter 3:16, 21), then we must draw the proper conclusions and conduct ourselves honorably in accordance therewith.

How then should we live? Again, on the one hand, God requires us not to be purposelessly or unnecessarily “contentious” (see Proverbs 26:21; Romans 2:8) and to "live peaceably with all men," but only "if it be possible [and] as much as lieth in [us]" (Romans 13:18), the capacity for which will vary with each individual, so the Scripture implies. So we see that there is some wiggle room here.

On the other hand, God also requires us to “know the truth" (John 8:32a; I Timothy 4:3), to “cho[o]se… the…truth” (Psalm 119:30a), to "belie[ve]...the truth" (II Thessalonians 2:13b), to "obey the truth" (Romans 2:8, Galatians 3:1, 5:7, I Peter 1:22), to “acknowledge[e] the truth” (II Timothy 2:25b; Titus 1:1), to "bear witness unto the truth" (John 18:37), to “testify of the truth” (III John 3), to "speak the truth" (Ephesians 4:15, I Timothy 2:7b), to "tell the truth" (Galatians 4:16), to "say the truth" (II Corinthians 12:6b), to "say nothing but the truth" (II Chronicles 18:15), to “lie not against the truth” (James 3:14), to not “err from the truth” (James 5:19), to “do the truth” (I John 1:6), to “walk in the truth” (John III:3), to “live” the truth (Galatians 2:20; Philippians 1:21; Hebrews 13:18b; I Peter 2:24b; 4:6c), and even to be indwelled by the “truth” (II John 2) so that “the truth…shall be with us forever” (II John 2), thus making us literally “of the truth,” which supreme spiritual Reality “assures our hearts before [God]” (I John 3:19), after which “the truth shall make [us] free” (John 8:32b).

Notice that the truth cannot simply “make us free,” if we just rely on attorneys, or on the actual facts, or on the inherent justice of the System, or on the common sense of jurors, or even on our own perfunctory prayers. “The truth shall make us free” only if we comply with all of the conditions as set forth in these paragraphs (and perhaps with some others as well).

Now I ask you: after you have been drenched in all the truths of the preceding paragraphs and after you have performed the requisite self-examination as indicated above, do you really believe it is the truth that you committed a crime on that fateful day last August?

If not, and knowing that to “lie against” and to “err from” “the truth” is to sin and that to sin – especially to be counted among “liars –…[is to] have…part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8), are you really prepared to confess to the court (and hence to all the world throughout all time) that you committed a crime?

Will you be able to live with such a betrayal, knowing how it could influence your children, should they ever conclude there from that they too can commit any old indiscretion or crime, lie about it, and get off lightly? Is that the kind of legacy that you wish to leave to them?

Or would you rather see them suffer some economic hardship (as have millions of other children throughout history who still grew up to become great men and women in spite of it) and grow up being incredibly proud of their father and being influenced, perhaps, to become, in their own ways, as great a prophet as their father is in (controversial) truth-telling?

Could you ask for more blessings for your children that they should grow up to become equally as indefatigable and on fire for the truth as you have been?

The Bible reports that John the Baptist told the (controversial) truth about the sins (which at that time included the unlawfulness) of King Herod and got beheaded for his (controversially) truthful efforts, and Jesus praised John for being the greatest prophet that Israel had, up until that time, ever produced (Luke 7:28a).

God warns us that a life of (controversial) truth-telling (and the telling of all really deep truth is controversial), i.e. that a life of prophecy – for truth-telling is what prophecy is biblically defined as – is not a bed of roses.

On the one hand, it is much easier in many instances not to prophesy or to tell the (controversial) truth. If, on the other hand, we are led to embark upon a career of prophecy – of telling the (controversial) truth – then we must be consistent (or, in biblical language, “non-dissembling”) in our truth telling (see Psalm 26;4; Proverbs 26:24; Jeremiah 42:20; Galatians 2:13).

“Let your communication be ‘yea, yea’ [or] ‘nay, nay.’ Whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil” (Matthew 5:37).

Telling the truth on the Internet but not in court doesn’t wash! God warns us that “all [who] will live godly…shall suffer persecution” (II Timothy 3:12), but in that persecution, “this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward [the truth] endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? But if, when ye do well and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example that [w]e should follow in his steps” (I Peter 2:19-21).

In other words, an honorable man (who honors the truth by consistently telling it) can take solace in God’s promise to honor him, if not in this vale of tears, then in heaven. Pie in the sky, you say? You don’t believe in the Bible?

Well, I say that even if an atheist could prove that there is no transcendent truth or God or heaven (which he can’t), that still wouldn’t negate the value to your children and to all others who are watching you of your heroic stand for truth, like that of Socrates, would it? Socrates could have run away (either by fleeing or by compromising the truth), but he chose to stand for and to tell the (controversial) truth (as he saw it), and his example shall continue to inspire the hearts of secularists (and Christians alike) throughout all time.

Isn’t that alone a worthy legacy for any honorable man and his family? Can economic hardship of one’s family ever justify a serious betrayal of the truth which a false confession of crime always entails? No, God honors those who honor Him, and as for children and/or wife left behind? “God setteth the solitary in families; He [also] bringeth out those which are bound with chains” (Psalm 68:6a+b).

Practically speaking, I do not wish to belittle the consequences to you and your family of a possible conviction and incarceration, which could conceivably happen, now that so many crimes and torts are being committed by state actors in your prosecution, but I still believe that:

1) you could easily convince a jury of your innocence – even without an attorney – just by prophetically telling the (controversial) truth and letting the chips fall where they may;

2) if convicted, you may be able to induce someone out there to finance your appeal, which must be overturned at some higher level, but if not, you would surely, as L. suggests, only get probation or supervision and, at most a nominal fine or a few days or weeks of community service.

None of these most likely worst-case consequences – not even a few months or a year in jail – would even come close in my view to the horrible prospect of confessing to the court and to all mankind (because, remember, you have the whole world watching your case, now that you’ve advertised it on the Internet) by means of a plea bargain that you have committed a crime.
