Brad Love Back In Jail For Writing Letters to Local Newspaper
Christmas Letter From Brad Love -- Political Prisoner, Inside the Canadian Gulag Dear Free Speech Supporter: This is a letter I received from political prisoner Brad Love, jailed in Canada and held now for 51 days without bail, inside the Canadian gulag. Oh yes, his crime? Writing non-violent, non-threatening letters to his local newspaper, the Etobicoke Guardian, letters the thought police might be “hateful” or “scurrilous” and, therefore, in violation of his parole on charges of, get this!, writing “hateful” letters to MPs, and police chiefs. As I approached the prison for my visit last Saturday, the title of the old Beatles’ song, “Back in the USSR”, ran through my head.. How fitting for Canada, a country in full retreat from freedom. Oh, yes, according to the silly asses on the Canadian Supreme Court group sex clubs are okay, so too is same sex marriage, but freedom of speech? Rulings over the years upholding Sec. 13.1 of the Canadian Human Rights Code – making telephonic, now Internet, messages that are “likely” to expose privileged minorities to “hatred or contempt” a discriminatory practice punishable by heavy fines, make you realize that our 9 unelected Supreme Court judges have more problems with strong opinions on immigration or the misdeeds of certain groups that group sex clubs. You free speech supporters around the world have been great. Brad has received Christmas greetings from folks in Australia, England, the U.S., Canada and even Hungary. The authorities look fish-eyed with disbelief as these cards roll in addressed to “Brad Love, Political Prisoner”. Keep those cards and letters coming. Brad loves to receive them and will answer you. After all, he’s a writer. If you'd like to drop Brad a note to let him know he's not forgotten inside the Canadian Gulag, here is his address: BRAD LOVE – the letter writing bricklayer, now back in prison because he wrote letters to his local newspaper criticizing the immigration invasion. Brad Love, Political Prisoner, Maplehurst Correctional Complex, 661 Martin St., P.O. Box 10, Milton, ON., L9T 2Y3, CANADA. Paul Fromm Director Canadian Association for Free Expression
BRAD'S CORNER - 12/17/2005 Paul. I appreciated your visit, the demo photos and, of course, your no-nonsense, "let's get in" approach to defeating this latest round of government harassment. As you known, my court date was put off to January 5, meaning I'm in jail for Christmas. (Oops, can I even say "Christmas"?) Which is, of course, the Crown's way of further punishing an unconvicted man. I should have been out long ago, like so many others similarly charged, but, alas, I am alleged to have written politically motivated letters to a small town newspaper. So, behind bars I must remain. Who knows what a crazed pen-wielding writer might do next - send paper airplanes with slogans on their wings flying across the lawn of Queer's (oops) Queen's Park? Call out the army. Oops, they're in Afghanistan!!! Call the cops? Again, busy taking racial sensitivity training while still dodging local gun fire. The OPP? Enforcing car pool lane regulations. The RCMP? Escorting crooks as they conduct business. Oops, I mean shadowing Paul Martin on the campaign trail. Like I was saying. Meanwhile, Iran decrees that the holocaust is a hoax (what else is new?) Austria jails author/historian David Irving, while in Toronto, crack pipes are free for the asking. Talk about your good, bad and ugly. Lots of mail and cards coming in. Hang in there folks, especially you overseas supporters, as I have to buy overseas envelopes to send out my "thank you" replies. Thanks to all who have taken the time to write me. Sunday, 18th. Lock down day. In our cells. No shavers, phone calls, etc. For those going to court tomorrow, it's terribly frustrating. No arrangements can be made. They say it's due to staff shortage, absenteeism, but who knows buck passery and lack of accountability thrive here. It's this "create a crisis" mentality that jams up both our jail and court system. So, for a guy like me, I devour books and newspapers, write letters and chat with my new "celly", Luke Warmwater, in on a D.W.I. (Drinking with Indians) charge. Even when visiting me, Paul, I'm sure, as an efficient guy that you are, you can't but notice the industrial overkill needed to enter such a forbidding yet poorly run government institution. This place ain't just meant to grind me down; it's meant to grind my visitors and supporters down as well. We'll get through it as we always do. While I'm in here, it's become known that I am a writer of sorts, thus the reason so many approach me to write court letters, business plans, poems, personal mail and to interpret legal documents sent their way. I don't mind. It keeps me busy and, although I'm somewhat of an oddity here due to my oddball charges, I gain points by helping out. Still, the rate of illiteracy in here alarms me, especially among the younger guys who just left school some years ago, but for reasons you'd know about, Paul, they either fell through the cracks or were passed over. And the courts know, as the government does, uninformed, passive and politically ignorant people are easier to dominate and mess with. Although it is true that many in here seem more interested in the next rap video than they are in the course of their case or future. I could go on about the number of crazies in here who display symptoms of autism, bipolar, attention deficit disorder, paranoia, and states of catatonic behavior. They'll slip through this system, undiagnosed, under represented and conveniently ignored. All of this due to the closing of mental health facilities with jail being the only available option to house these castoffs. We give away $3 billion per year to countries that either hate us or take us for the suckers that we are and this is how we treat our own people. Yea, yea, I know: "Be a good Canadian and don't say anything.” M. came up for a visit today and you know folks, when a man from the [former] Soviet Union tells me that Canada is worse than what old Russia once was in regards to oppression and lack of personal freedoms, I get scared. Nonetheless, it was nice to see friends and allies taking the time to visit an orange jumpsuit clad yahoo such as me. Monday. Still confined to our cells. Reason unknown. So I'll spend my long day finishing up letters to send out before the Christmas cutoff date. >From my cell window I can just make out cars on the 401 Hwy heading into Toronto. Unknown masses trying to survive in a nation of riches but under a weak, self-serving, inept government. [Canada is]slowly in decline. And not just in personal rights and freedoms but culturally and historically as well. Too many of us are disenfranchised, shamed and afraid to take part in any sort of due process. To even cast a vote is bothersome to many. Confidently, I can say that those that I count as my friends are not these types of people. They are shout-from-the- rooftop Canadians, too proud to look the other way. To this I am thankful and await the vents of the New Year. MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALL!!! Brad Love

SCARBOROUGH, April 17 Brad Love Out of Prison: 1,000 More Days Gagged/CAFÉ Mounts Successful Demo for Love SCARBOROUGH, April 17. Two dozen supporters of the Canadian Association for Free Expression (CAFE), supported by the Canadian Heritage Alliance and the Northern Alliance protested outside the Metro East Detention Centre today, demanding the release of Brad Love, Canada’s second most famous political prisoner. "Mr. Love has been denied bail and held in prison since March 3 for writing letters to MPPs on immigration,” CAFÉ Director Paul Fromm told the protesters. These letters were non-threatening and merely expressed his unhappiness with poorly screened immigration that has led to such criminal behaviour as marijuana grow-ops." Mr. Love was convicted, in July, 2003 of "promoting hate", in connection with dozens of letters he'd written over the years to federal MPs. One of his probation conditions, on his release in March 2004, was not to write "hateful or scurrilous" letters. Mr. Love has been gainfully employed and faithfully kept his appointments with his probation officer. He was arrested leaving the probation office on March 3 and charged for having written 30 more letters to MPPs. For some reason, the Ontario Justice system has a hate on for Brad Love," Mr. Fromm said. "His lawyer, Peter Lindsay, knows of persons charged with murder released on $100,000 bail. The Crown initially agreed to a $200,000 surety -- an extraordinary sum for charges that do not involve violence -- and then reneged on the deal. Keeping a non-violent letter writer in prison is an abuse of process," Fromm added. "Police from York Region, Peel, Metro and the OPP have acted like political police in Mr. Love's case, " said Fromm. "Officers from all four police forces sat through two and a half days of bail hearings in early March. Yet, police often fail to show up for the bail hearings of violent offenders, who then are released with low bail and few conditions," he charges. "We believe that Mr. Love's outspoken opposition to the government's immigration policies have made him a target of the increasingly politicized policing in this province." "It's a waste of taxpayers' money keeping this letter writer in prison," Fromm added. TORONTO. April 18, 2005. Reaction to a letter-writing campaign and protests was not long in coming. Today Brad Love was released from prison after a courtroom appearance in Toronto’s Old City Hall. “Mr. Love was released on time served with strict conditions,” Love’s lawyer Peter Lindsay announced this afternoon. While free, after a hasty plea bargain, Mr. Love becomes a gagged political non-person. For the next 1,000 days, he explained from his Etobicoke house this evening, “I am to have no contact with any elected political official or Jewish organization. If there was a political meeting with an elected official, I couldn’t attend,” Mr. Love said. “It’s pure bullshit. It’s unprecedented anywhere in Canada. That’s what they do when they have you between a rock and a hard place,” he said of his six weeks in jail for writing letters. He had two years of his original three-year probation to serve and another one was tacked on today. He pleaded guilty to four breaches of probation and was given time served, plus the new Orwellian gag order. “CAFÉ will assist Mr. Love in appealing his court decision which strips him of his rights as a Canadian and free citizen to contact and lobby his elected officials,” Paul Fromm announced this evening from his Rexdale office. Ironically, the Crown in Mr. Love’s draconian plea bargain was Michael Leshner a homosexual crusader for same-sex marriage who, soon after the judicial revolutionaries on the Ontario Court of Appeals made such arrangements legal, married his longstanding “partner.” So, here was an activist who had long campaigned for his rights, stripping Mr. Love of the fundamental right to speak to politicians. “Mr. Love is red-flagged with every police force in Southern Ontario,” the Crown persecutor warned.
