We may not pay Satan reverence, for
that would be indiscreet, but we can at least respect his talents. A person who
has for untold centuries maintained the imposing position of spiritual head of
four-fifths of the human race, and political head of the whole of it, must be
granted the possession of executive abilities of the loftiest order."

LUCIFER AND SATAN IN FREEMASONRY
http://freemasonry.bcy.ca/Writings/LuciferandSatan.html
Neither the attributes nor
personifications of Lucifer or Satan play any role in the beliefs or rituals of
Freemasonry. The topic is only of interest insofar as anti-masonic attacks have
accused Freemasonry of worshiping Lucifer. The confusion stems from such 19th
century Masonic authors as Albert Pike and Albert G. Mackey who have used the
term "luciferian" in its classical or literary sense to refer to a
search for knowledge.
"Lucifer" is the
Latin term originally used by the Romans to refer to the planet Venus when that
planet was west of the sun and hence rose before the sun in the morning, thereby
being the morning star.
The same planet was called
Hesperus, Cesperugo, Vesper, Noctifer, or Nocturnus, when it appeared in the
heavens after sunset. Lucifer as a personification is called a son of Astraeus
and Aurora or Eos, of Cephalus and Aurora, or of Atlas. He is called the father
of Ceyx, Daedalion, and of the Hesperides. Lucifer is also a surname of several
goddesses of light, such as Artemis, Aurora, and Hecate. 1.
The word appears to have
entered the religious lexicon when the Hebrew expression in Isaiah 14:12, "HeYLeL
BeN-ShaCHaR." (meaning "bright son of the morning/dawn,"
"bright [and] morning star," "glowing morning star," or
"shining one, son of the dawn.")2. was translated to
"Phosphorus" (the Greek word for Venus as the morning star) in the
Septuagint, and then translated into "Lucifer" in the Vulgate (from
the Greek Septuagint). Isaiah 14, taken as a whole, is a parable, or prophecy of
denunciation against the Kings of Babylon, specifically Tiglath-pileser III
(circa 716 BCE) In verse 12, the prophet characterizes the arrogance of
Tiglath-pileser III as if the king had thought himself fit to appear in the sky
as the morning star, but has fallen to earth, being brought low by the vengeance
of the Lord against those who would exalt themselves and persecute the Lord's
people (i.e., the Israelites).
Origenes Adamantius (185 CE
- 254 CE), an important Christian scholar of the early Greek Church, and
Augustine of Canterbury (d. May 26 604/605 CE), founder of the Christian Church
in southern England, both interpreted the use of the term Lucifer as a reference
to the Devil.
The name Lucifer was applied
to Satan by St. Jerome and then to the demon of sinful pride by Milton in
Paradise Lost. This was fanciful development of an original reference confused
in translation. Lucifer is the title and principal character of the epic poem by
the Dutch Shakespeare, Vondel (who uses Lucifer in lieu of Satan), and a
principal character in the mystery play by Imre Madach, "The Tragedy of
Man". Blake pictured Lucifer in his illustrations to Dante. George
Meredith's sonnet Lucifer in Starlight addresses the "fiend" as Prince
Lucifer. To Spenser in An Hymne of Heavenly Love, Lucifer is "the brightest
angel, even the Child of Light." In Ovid's Metamorphosis, Lucifer is the
morning star and father of Ceyx. He is described as riding a white horse (clarus
equo, book XV.189) and his face is characterized by a bright gladness (see
XI.270 ff. Lucifero genitore satus patriumque nitorem ore ferens Ceyx). Also see
Books II.115 and 723, IV.629,665.
The word "Satan"
is from a Hebrew word, "Sathane", meaning adversary or culminiator; in
original Jewish usage (see the book of Job), Satan is the adversary, not of God,
but of mankind; i.e., the angel charged by God with the task of proving that
mankind is an unworthy creation. 4. Later, as Judaism absorbed such ideas as
Zoroastrian dualism and concepts about angels during the Exile, and then as
Christianity echoed various concepts from earlier religions, the concept of an
evil power ruling an underground domain of punishment for the wicked became
fixed in Christian doctrine. In such a doctrine, elements of the Graeco-Roman
god Pluto/Vulcan/Hephaestus, the Underworld, and various aspects of
Nordic/Teutonic mythology may be traced.
The Latin name of
Phosphorus, Venus as the morning star, is the light bringer which heralds the
dawn. The name is sometimes applied to the planet as the evening star as well,
although Hesperus is properly its name then. By a curious chain of reference,
the passage in Luke 10:18 was thought to refer to Isaiah 14:12, in which the
star is used metaphorically for the monarch of Babylon. Thus Lucifer became the
chief of the fallen angels, the name borned by Satan before his rebellion. 5.
From a supposed reference to
this passage in our Lord's words. 'I beheld Satan fallen as lightning from
heaven' (Lk 10:18), in connexion with Rev 9:1-11 (the language of 9:1 being in
part probably derived from this passage), Lucifer came in the Middle Ages to be
a common appellation of Satan. The star of Rev 9:1-11 is a fallen angel who has
given to him the key of the abyss, from which he sets loose upon the earth
horribly formed locusts with scorpions' tails, who have, however, power to hurt
only such men as have not the seal of God on their foreheads. But this angel is
not actually identified with Satan by the writer of the Apocalypse. The imagery
in Is was no doubt suggested by a meteor, and possibly it was so in Rev also. 6.
The following references to
the Hebrew texts are of some relevance: Numbers 24:17 "...there shall come
a Star out of Jacob...." 2 Peter 1:19 "...until the day dawn, and the
day star arise in your hearts:" Revelations 22:16: "I Jesus have sent
mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and
the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."

LUCIFER, also called Lucifer
Calaritanus (d. c.370), bishop of Cagliari, Sardinia, was a fierce opponent of
the heresy of Arianism (first proposed early in the 4th century by the
Alexandrian presbyter Arius, who taught that Christ is not truly divine but a
created being). To further his rigorously orthodox views, Lucifer Calaritanus
founded the Luciferians, a sect that survived in scattered remnants into the
early 5th century. 7
It was attacked by St.
Jerome in his polemic Altercatio Luciferiani et orthodoxi ("The Dispute of
the Luciferian and the Orthodox"). References to these Luciferians, without
further explanation, has occasionally lead subsequent writers such as Nesta H.
Webster to erroneously assume that they were Satanic.
LUCIFER shining one, i.e.
the morning star, as explained by the following words 'son of dawn,' Is 14:12).
- The word is applied by the writer of the prophecy to the King of Babylon,
partly in reference to the astrology for which Chaldaea was famous in ancient
times, partly to the prevailing belief in the deification of heroes. The king of
Babylon had complacently looked forward to the time when he would ascend into
heaven and exalt his thrown above the stars of God. But in reality his dead body
would be treated with the utmost contempt. ''a carcass trodden under foot',
while his soul would descend into Sheol, and there receive but an empty honour
from the shades, astounded that the great and mighty king could become like one
of themselves. 3.

Light on Lucifer

Revised Standard Version).]
Is there any difference
between Lucifer and Satan? Westerners generally would say they are one and the
same. Especially those in fundamentalist Christian circles consider Lucifer an
archangel who fell from grace and was thrown out of heaven because of
"sinful pride." His "sin" was thinking he was equal to God
and rebelling against Him. This rebellious angel is known as Satan, Lucifer, or
the Devil, who tempts us to do evil. Supposedly, one of the most evil things
Lucifer tempts us to do is to think that we are God. So those who
believe in the essential divinity of all life are often accused of committing
Satan's sin, and of being under the influence of Lucifer. Where do these ideas
about Satan and Lucifer come from? Is there a biblical basis for them?
Lucifer means
lightbringer, from the Latin lux "light" and ferre
"to bear or bring." The word Lucifer is found in only one place
in the Bible -- Isaiah 14:12 -- but only in the King James and related versions:
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! . .
." The New Revised Standard Version translates the same passage as
"How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, Son of Dawn!" In other
translations we find: "O shining star of the dawn!" (Moffatt) or
"O morning-star, son of the dawn!" (Hebrew Bible). The King James
Version is based on the Vulgate, the Latin translation of Jerome. Jerome
translated the Hebrew helel (bright or brilliant one) as "lucifer,"
which was a reasonable Latin equivalent. And yet it is this lucifer, the
bright one or lightbearer, that came to be understood by so many as the name for
Satan, Lord of Darkness.
In Isaiah 14 the prophet is
taunting the king of Babylon: "In the figurative language of the Hebrews, .
. . a star, signifies an illustrious king or prince . . . The monarch
here referred to, having surpassed all other kings in royal splendour, is
compared to the harbinger of day, whose brilliancy surpasses that of the
surrounding stars" (A Cyclopedia of Biblical Literature, John
Kitto ed., 3rd ed., J. B. Lippincott and Co, Philadelphia, 1866, 2:857-8). There
are those who claim that the real entity addressed in this passage is Satan, but
there is no evidence for this. On the contrary, Isaiah (14:16) says: "Is
this the man who made the earth tremble, . . . ?" and (14:18) "All the
kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb; but you are cast out .
. ." These seem clear references to a man, the king of a nation, not an
archangel.
There is yet another reason
why it makes no sense to read the Devil into Isaiah 14: the traditional role of
Satan in the Old Testament. Satan comes from the Hebrew satan, which
means "opponent" or "adversary." According to Strong's
Concordance, this word appears in 1 Chronicles, Job, Psalms, and in
Zechariah. In Psalms "satan" is used both in the plural (accusers)
and in the indefinite sense (an accuser). In Chronicles and Zechariah
its usage is ambiguous, while in Job "satan" as The Accuser appears
only in the first two of its 42 chapters. It is important, however, to keep in
mind that the texts of the Old Testament did not reach their "final"
version until after the Babylonian exile. Before this exile there is no evidence
in Hebrew scriptures of an Accuser as a force that opposes God, and even after
the exile it is still doubtful. Though the story of Job is very old, its final
version is dated after the exile, after the Hebrews came into contact
with the dualist Zoroastrian religion with its god of good and its god of evil.
There is even division among
Old Testament scholars as to whether evil should be associated with Satan at
all. Some say that Satan was originally not considered evil but gradually became
identified with his unpleasant functions. According to this approach, Satan is
still God's servant. There is much in the Book of Job that tends to support this
view. Satan appears only in the first two chapters and then disappears. Some
believe the first two chapters were added much later, for in the last chapter we
read: ". . . they showed him sympathy and comforted him for all the evil
that the Lord had brought upon him" (42:11).
It appears that the Hebrews
did not have a devil-like power opposed to God. Satan, or the Satan as
he is often called, is an angel in the court of God with the function of
an accuser (see Job 1:6). There are also indications that along with all that is
"good," all that is "evil" comes from God, not Satan. In
Isaiah 45:7 God says: "I form light and create darkness, I make weal and
create woe; I the Lord do all these things." Valentine's Jewish
Encyclopedia confirms the idea that there is a radical difference between
how Satan is conceived in the Old Testament and how he is conceived in the New
Testament, and that his new role did not develop from his original role: there
are no references "to rebellious angels in any pre-Christian book. . . .
The figure of Satan in the Hebrew Bible and in the New Testament respectively
emphasizes the difference in conception. There is no development, but basic
difference. . . . It is only in Christian literature that the Persian idea of
two opposing empires, with Satan as God's enemy, has persisted" (Valentine's
Jewish Encyclopedia, A. M. Hyamson & A. M. Silberman eds., Shapiro,
Valentine & Co, London, 1938, p. 36).
There is actually very
little in the Old Testament to support the idea of Satan as a rebellious angel
and the power opposing God. He is generally depicted as a heavenly attorney
general (accuser) functioning under God, and this only strengthens the argument
for not reading Satan into the passage about Lucifer in Isaiah 14:12.
Isaiah is one of the older books in the Bible and is definitely pre-exile.
If there is no sound
biblical basis for associating Lucifer with Satan, where then does the story
come from that he is a rebellious angel and fell because of pride? The Christian
Church made the interpretation that Isaiah 14:12 is connected with Luke 10:18:
"He said to them, I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of
lightning." This unfounded, non-biblical connection of Lucifer with Satan
has led to the popular misunderstanding that Lucifer is another name for the
Devil (cf. "Lucifer," Harper's Bible Dictionary, Paul
Achtemeier, gen. ed., Harper & Row, San Francisco, 1985).
As Lucifer is the morning
star, daystar, or Venus, the absurdity of connecting him with the Devil is
revealed in the three New Testament passages where morning star or daystar is
mentioned:
So we have the prophetic
message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a
lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises
in your hearts. -- 2 Peter 1:19
. . . from my Father. To the
one who conquers I will also give the morning star. -- Revelation 2:28
It is I, Jesus, who sent my
angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the
descendant of David, the bright morning star. -- Revelation 2 2:16
All three references to the
morning star point to Jesus or things Jesus says or gives. In the Vulgate the
word "morning star" in 2 Peter is even translated as lucifer. In
the other two references it is stella matutina.
It is puzzling that
"lightning" should be used in relation to Satan in Luke 10:18,
especially when one considers two other references to lightning in the New
Testament: Matthew 24:27 and Luke 17:24. These two references connect lightning
with the Son of Man or Jesus and his second coming, which is understandable when
one studies ancient religious symbolism: "In Judeo-Christian thought
lightning is a symbol of God's immediate presence . . . or of the last
Judgment" ("Lightning," Dictionary of Symbolism, Hans
Biedermann, Penguin Books, New York, 1992). Even when we put aside the question
of what God's "opponent" should be called, the fact remains that the
story of a rebellious angel who fell because of pride is not in the Bible at
all. Some claim that the fallen Satan is present from the very beginning, even
though his name does not appear in Genesis. Paul suggested that the serpent was
Satan, the implication being that Satan tempted Adam. Yet most of the early
Church Fathers believed that Satan fell after Adam. It took the Church
over 200 years to establish that Satan's sin was pride, that he fell before the
creation of man, and that he was the serpent that tempted Adam and Eve.
To find the story of the
fall of Satan, we must go to sources other than the Bible. There was a great
deal of literature produced roughly between 200 BC and 150 AD, including the
Apocrypha and the Pseudepigrapha. Some of these are apocalyptic -- they prophesy
cataclysmic events and the end of the world. In this literature one can see the
development of the idea of an evil spirit, but even in the apocalyptic
literature the Devil does not become entirely evil in his origin and essence.
Many of the books from this period reflect the misery of the Jewish people under
the oppression of Syria and Rome. Their writings deal with visions of the end of
the world, the world being in the power of the Devil, and the Messiah conquering
the Devil and bringing a new era of justice. The Book of Enoch is
seen by many as one of the earliest and most important accounts of the mishaps
of the Heavenly Court (of angels). It also describes the rebellion of the angel
Satanail, and his being hurled from heaven (2 Enoch, ch. 29, long MSS only).
Some scholars take this to mean that the amalgamation of Satan and Lucifer goes
back to the first century. A redating of 2 Enoch, however, puts it later than
the third century, perhaps even in the seventh. For this reason others suggest
that Origen (Exhort. 18) was probably the inventor of the identification of
Lucifer with Satan (Satan: The Early Christian Tradition, Jeffrey
Burton Russell, Cornell University Press, Ithaca, 1991, p. 130 & fn). The
Life of Adam and Eve (Vita), a Jewish scripture that scholars date
between 200 BC and 200 AD, relates that Satan tells Adam and Eve that his fall
from heaven is the result of his refusal to worship Adam, the image of God. A
similar account is also found in the Koran (S 2:34). These legends reflect a
theme close to the primordial "pride" that led to the so-called fall
of Satan.
Since the Old Testament does
not connect pride or the Fall with Satan, the Devil, or the Adversary, the only
scriptural "support" for this notion is the misinterpretation of the
fall of Lucifer (the king of Babylon), and certain passages in the New
Testament. But the New Testament does not give any clear information on the fall
of Satan through pride either. One place where Lucifer is connected with pride
is in Milton's Paradise Lost. He "applied the name to the
demon of sinful pride" ("Lucifer," A Dictionary of Angels, Gustav
Davidson, The Free Press, New York, 1967).
It appears that the whole
story of Lucifer as Satan, the fallen rebellious angel, is based entirely on
non-canonical sources: the so-called Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha. There are
also many pre-Christian myths and allegories that include stories about Lucifer,
which is the Latin name for the Greek Eosphoros. In his Theogony Hesiod
speaks of two divine beings, the brothers Eosphoros (the morning star) and
Hesperos (the evening star). They are the children of Astraios (the starry
heaven) and Eos (the dawn). The morning star, like the Virgin of the Sea, is one
of the titles given to Divine Mother goddesses such as the Roman Venus, the
Phoenician Astarte, the Jewish Ashtoreth, and the later Christian Holy Virgin.
In the oldest Zoroastrian allegories, Mithra is supposed to have conquered the
planet Venus. In the Christian tradition, Michael defeats Lucifer.
The planet Venus is the
lightbringer, the first radiant beam that does away with the darkness of night.
It is a symbol of the development of the divine light in man, for the first
awakening of self-consciousness, for independent thinking and the real
application of free will. It means the bringing of the light of
compassionate understanding to the human mind. In this broader view the
connection of the morning star with Jesus makes good sense, because compassion
is the essence of Jesus' teaching. This teaching shows the greatest consensus
throughout the New Testament: it is mentioned in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,
Romans, Galatians, 1 Thessalonians, Hebrews, 1 John, James, and 1 Peter. The
best known reference is in Matthew (22:37-40):
"You shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all
the law and the prophets."

IS
SATAN “LUCIFER”?
by
Bert
Thompson, Ph.D.
Q.
Isaiah 14:12 mentions the
name of "Lucifer." I’ve heard it said that this is Satan. Are
Lucifer and Satan one and the same?
A.
It is sad, but nevertheless
true, that on occasion Bible students attribute to God’s Word facts and
concepts that it neither teaches nor advocates. These ill-advised beliefs run
the entire gamut—from harmless misinterpretations to potentially
soul-threatening false doctrines.
Although there are numerous
examples from both categories that could be listed, perhaps one of the most
popular misconceptions among Bible believers is that Satan also is designated as
“Lucifer” within the pages of the Bible. What is the origin of the name
Lucifer, what is its meaning, and is it a synonym for “Satan”? Here are the
facts.
The word “Lucifer” is
used in the King James Version only once, in Isaiah 14:12: “How art thou
fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the
ground, which didst weaken the nations!” The Hebrew word translated “Lucifer”
is helel (or heylel), from the root, hâlâl, meaning “to shine” or “to
bear light.” Keil and Delitzsch noted that “[i]t derives its name in other
ancient languages also from its striking brilliancy, and is here called
ben-shachar (son of the dawn)... (1982, 7:311). However, the KJV translators did
not translate helel as Lucifer because of something inherent in the Hebrew term
itself. Instead, they borrowed the name from Jerome’s translation of the Bible
(A.D. 383-405) known as the Latin Vulgate. Jerome, likely believing that the
term was describing the planet Venus, employed the Latin term “Lucifer” (“light-bearing”)
to designate “the morning star” (Venus). Only later did the suggestion
originate that Isaiah 14:12ff. was speaking of the devil. Eventually, the name
Lucifer came to be synonymous with Satan. But is Satan “Lucifer”?
No, he is not. The context
into which verse 12 fits begins in verse 4 where God told Isaiah to “take up
this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, ‘How hath the oppressor
ceased! the golden city ceased!’” In his commentary on Isaiah, Albert Barnes
explained that God’s wrath was kindled against the king because the ruler “intended
not to acknowledge any superior either in heaven or earth, but designed that
himself and his laws should be regarded as supreme” (1950, 1:272). The
chest-pounding boast of the impudent potentate was:
I will ascend into heaven, I
will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of
congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; I will ascend above the
heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High (vss. 13-14). As a
result of his egotistical self-deification, the pagan monarch eventually would
experience both the collapse of his kingdom and the loss of his life—an
ignominious end that is described in vivid and powerful terms. “Sheol from
beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming,” the prophet proclaimed
to the once-powerful king. And when the ruler finally descends into his eternal
grave, captives of that hidden realm will taunt him by saying, “Is this the
man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms?” (vs. 16). He is
denominated as a “man” (vs. 16) who would die in disrepute and whose body
would be buried, not in a king’s sarcophagus, but in pits reserved for the
downtrodden masses (vss. 19-20). Worms would eat his body, and hedgehogs would
trample his grave (vss. 11,23).
It was in this context that
Isaiah referred to the king of Babylon as “the morning star” (“son of the
morning”; “son of the dawn”) to depict the once-shining-but-now-dimmed,
once-lofty-but-now-diminished, status of the (soon to be former) ruler. In his
Bible Commentary, E.M. Zerr observed that such phrases were “...used
figuratively in this verse to symbolize the dignity and splendor of the
Babylonian monarch. His complete overthrow was likened to the falling of the
morning star” (1954, 3:265). This kind of phraseology should not be surprising
since “[i]n the O.T., the demise of corrupt national powers is frequently
depicted under the imagery of falling heavenly luminaries (cf. Isa. 13:10; Ezek.
32:7), hence, quite appropriately in this context the Babylonian monarch is
described as a fallen star [cf. ASV]” (Jackson, 1987, 23:15).
Nowhere within the context
of Isaiah 14, however, is Satan depicted as Lucifer. In fact, quite the opposite
is true. In his commentary on Isaiah, Burton Coffman wrote: “We are glad that
our version (ASV) leaves the word Lucifer out of this rendition, because...Satan
does not enter into this passage as a subject at all” (1990, p. 141). The
Babylonian ruler was to die and be buried—fates neither of which Satan is
destined to endure. The king was called “a man” whose body was to be eaten
by worms, but Satan, as a spirit, has no physical body. The monarch lived in and
abided over a “golden city” (vs. 4), but Satan is the monarch of a kingdom
of spiritual darkness (cf. Ephesians 6:12). And so on.
The context presented in
Isaiah 4:4-16 not only does not portray Satan as Lucifer, but actually militates
against it. Keil and Delitzsch firmly proclaimed that “Lucifer,” as a
synonym, “is a perfectly appropriate one for the king of Babel, on account of
the early date of the Babylonian culture, which reached back as far as the grey
twilight of primeval times, and also because of its predominate astrological
character” (1982, p. 312). They then correctly concluded that “Lucifer, as a
name given to the devil, was derived from this passage...without any warrant
whatever, as relating to the apostasy and punishment of the angelic leaders”
(pp. 312-313).

it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble,

Three sentences (of which two are actually
exclamations), taken from a book of 861 pages with a 216 page index. Does this
seem a bit disingenuous right from the start?
 Let's
step back a bit before we go any further. Some anti-Masons are also fond of
quoting the book by John J. Robinson titled Born in Blood in attempting
to tie supposedly heinous acts of the 13th Century Knights Templar with
Freemasonry today. While this is a gross misinterpretation of Robinson's work,
perhaps it would be good to look at another work of his titled A Pilgrim's
Path. In there, we find an extraordinarily well-written explanation of the
Pike quote regarding Lucifer.
Robinson writes:
Albert Pike
and the Morning
Star
"ALBERT PIKE (1809-91) was a lawyer, a
poet, a prolific writer, a general in the army of the Confederate States of
America, and a Freemason. He was a voracious reader, especially interested in
the religions and philosophical systems of ancient cultures, which he saw as
having shaped the thinking and codes of morality of people around the world. As
a general, he commanded neither white nor black troops, but American Indians. He
studied and respected their religious beliefs. But no matter how deeply he
probed into other religions, nothing Pike learned ever shook his own faith as a
devout Trinitarian Christian. Politically, he did not favor stronger central
control, as is evidenced by his willingness to risk his life and fortune in a
war that started not over the issue of slavery, but over the political concept
of states' rights. In hindsight Pike may be judged to have been wrong
politically, but at least he was willing to die for what he believed."
"Fundamentalist anti-Masons love to
condemn all Freemasonry based on the writings and philosophy of Albert Pike.
They never say that Pike's works were written only for the Southern Jurisdiction
of Scottish Rite Masonry, which was the limit of Pike's Masonic authority. He
was the Sovereign Grand Commander of that Masonic body from 1859 until his death
in 1891."
"The Southern Jurisdiction of Scottish
Rite in America covers thirty-five southern and western states. It has about
half a million members, or about 20 percent of the total Masonic membership in
the United States. That means that about 80 percent of American Masons have
little or no knowledge of the work of General Pike. I have found that most
Masons have not even heard of him. These men are mystified by attacks on Masonry
that cite Pike's writings, since they have no idea what the antagonist is
talking about."
"Pike's passion - perhaps obsession -
was that all men should seek knowledge, or "light." From that light
came information and understanding. Some fundamentalists, however, assert that
all "light" comes from Jesus, and that any other source of light is
anti-Christian, even though the rest of the world continues to use expressions
like, "We've got to bring this to light," or, "Can anyone here
shed some light on this matter?" That's what the Scripps-Howard newspaper
chain had in mind when it adopted a lighthouse as its trademark, with the
slogan, "Give the people light and they will find their way.""
""Light," in the sense that
is used by Pike, means education. Education is one of those things that most of
us think is universally approved, but the anti-Masons take Masonry to task for
such emphasis on it, taking the stand that too much secular education can be
damaging to a good Christian. They often fall back on the belief of their
predecessor fundamentalists of generations ago, who believed that education
requires no written work other than Holy Scripture."
"Yet that scripture itself admonishes
Christians to seek knowledge, and totally supports the Masonic dedication to
charity. Christian Masons can take comfort from the second epistle of Peter
1:5-7: "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue;
and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance
patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to
brotherly kindness charity." A good summary of Masonic belief."
"Very few people are aware that in the
lecture accompanying the second degree in the symbolic lodge all Masons are
encouraged to continue their own education and to gain knowledge in the liberal
arts, defined in the older context of that term as grammar, rhetoric, logic,
arithmetic, music, astronomy, and geometry. The Masons emphasize the benefits of
continuing education, even to the extent that many Masonic charities provide
scholarships for deserving students on a nondenominational basis. Pike was in
complete harmony with that approach, but he was somewhat different in that his
own fascination was heavily weighted toward the history of religion, the subject
of most of his writings."
"Pike was convinced that he had
benefited greatly from his lifelong studies of other religions and philosophies,
because what he had learned gave him a broader understanding of all humankind.
Many of the ancient religions he had studied were gone from the earth, but he
was convinced that they had made contributions to later thought and moral
systems. He had a good point: There are those who would deny that Muhammad
learned anything from the Jews and Christians he met on his trading missions, or
that Moses learned anything while growing up at the Egyptian court, but reason
indicates the opposite."
"Not everyone believes that
familiarity with other religions and cultures is beneficial, however; exposure
to alien ideas and customs may be thought to contaminate the student's religious
and political beliefs. That's why the Catholic Church created the Index of books
not to be read by Catholics, and why fundamentalists have sought the legal
exclusion from classrooms and libraries of books that teach morality on a
nonreligious basis, or even scientific knowledge that seems at odds with
Scripture."
"In his conviction that wisdom would
be gained by learning what others believed, and why they behaved as they did,
Albert Pike poured his prodigious knowledge into written works, so that he could
share that information. Today, universities offer master's and doctoral degrees
in the comparative study of world religions and in the history of religion. Pike
would have approved. His plan was to educate all Scottish Rite Masons in his
Southern Jurisdiction by imparting that comparative knowledge as an essential
aspect of Scottish Rite training."
"The course of education Pike laid out
was in twenty-nine parts, to fit the Scottish Rite system of the 4th through the
32nd degrees. Rather than being taught in pedantic lectures, the information is
imparted primarily in ceremonial dramas, which are usually more effective in
helping the student to retain what he has learned. The major difference between
the Pike-inspired course of instruction and that employed in some theological
seminaries is that Scottish Rite does not identify any religion as the One True
Faith. It teaches to inform, not to prove the error of all faiths except that of
the lecturer. Some of the work does arrive at conclusions, such as those
condemning tyranny (from either a religious or secular source), and a charge to
seek the light of knowledge, rather than yield to the ignorance that permits
some men to dominate the unknowing. So Pike's primary lesson calls to mind the
old IBM slogan that used to appear in every workplace: the simple advice,
"THINK!" That very concept is offensive to many a fundamentalist
evangelist, who will happily do all the thinking his followers will ever
need."
"Some of the critics of Masonry cite
the degree work, but more find their raw material for Masonic condemnation in
Pike's writings, especially his ponderous Morals and Dogma, an 861-page volume
that many Masons own, but few have read. It is not only tedious reading, but is
full of Pike's own perceptions of Masonry. Many Masons will agree with some
statements, but there are others that no Mason will ever believe. Pike was so
wrapped up in his knowledge of ancient faiths and philosophic systems that he
tended to make the background of Masonry far more complex and esoteric than it
was ever meant to be. In some of his chapters, if the words "Mason"
and "Masonry" were removed, it is reasonable to believe that many a
Mason reading it would not recognize his own fraternity."
"Pike was a man with an extraordinary
breadth of knowledge, and it is only natural that he wanted to share it all.
Unfortunately, he had just one outlet that he could count on, and he appears to
have wanted to find a place for everything he knew in the Southern Jurisdiction
of Scottish Rite. The teachings of Masonry are simple and clear. Pike preferred
them to be festooned with mystic interpretations and deep, arcane
meanings."
"Make no mistake: Pike was a dynamic
force in establishing a strong membership in his own jurisdiction, and a strong
force in establishing degree work that has lasted for a hundred years. He was a
towering figure in the history of American Masonry. What he was not was a Grand
Master of any Grand Lodge, who alone is the final authority in basic Masonic
practices and jurisprudence. He was never a spokesman for all of Freemasonry and
never tried to assert himself as such. He was a strong man who never shrank from
expressing his personal opinions, and it is important to remember that his
pronouncements as they relate to Masonry are just that: his own opinions."
"That's why the most important part of
Morals and Dogma may be its preface. Not written by Pike himself, the
preface was, and is, the official statement of The Supreme Council, the
governing body of Scottish Rite Masonry that published his work. It has been
ratified by every succeeding Supreme Council, up to this very day. In part, it
says (italics mine {i.e. those of author Robinson}):"
In preparing this work, the Grand
Commander [Pike] has been about equally Author and Compiler; since he has
extracted quite half its contents from the works of the best writers and most
philosophic or eloquent thinkers. Perhaps it would have been better and more
acceptable if he had extracted more and written less.
"To remove any thought that the work
contains religious dogma for Scottish Rite Masons, the preface says:"
The teachings of these readings are not
sacramental, so far as they go beyond the realm of Morality into those other
domains of Thought and Truth. The ancient and accepted Scottish Rite uses the
word "Dogma" in its true sense, of doctrine, or teaching; and is not
dogmatic in the odious sense of that term.
"And now the most important sentence
in the preface (and, once again, the italics are mine {i.e., those of
Robinson}):"
Everyone is entirely free to reject and
dissent from whatsoever herein may seem to him to be untrue or unsound.
"I was very relieved to find that
statement at the beginning of Morals and Dogma, because there is much in it that
I "reject and dissent from." Such a statement requires at least one
example, and I offer the following quote from page 819:"
""The Blue Degrees [first, second
and third] are but the outer court or portico of the Temple. Part of the symbols
are displayed there to the Initiate, but he is intentionally misled by false
interpretations. It is not intended that he shall understand them; but it is
intended that he shall imagine that he understands them. Their true explication
is reserved for the Adepts, the Princes of Masonry (the 28th degree and
beyond)." I have asked enough Masons to convince myself that there is
no Mason anywhere who agrees with that statement."
"His historical facts are usually
correct, but that cannot always be said of his opinions. As an historian who has
spent years researching the history of the crusading order of the Knights
Templar, I was appalled to read Pike's words, "The Templars were
unintelligent and therefore unsuccessful Jesuits," and "Their
watchword was to become wealthy, in order to buy the world.""
"On the other hand, most Christians
will agree with much of what Albert Pike has to say about his own faith in
Christianity. His discussion of baptism calls the Christian rite "a baptism
of repentance, for the remission of sins: that is, the necessity of repentance
proven by reformation." That "reformation" of the repentant
baptized Christian is now being referred to as being "born again,"
which puts Pike's definition of the sacrament right in line with the beliefs of
those who condemn him most angrily. His critics, of course, never quote those
points: Their aim is to extract comments about the many religions, sects, and
cults described in Morals and Dogma, so that they can be cited, regardless of
their original content, as "documentation" that Masons believe the
teachings of those ancient cults, and must believe them. They know they are
lying, but quoting out of context is too wonderful a tool to be abandoned."
"Nothing thrills the anti-Mason as
much as Pike's references to Lucifer. Most Christians reading this will
immediately recognize Lucifer as the fallen angel, as Satan, the ruler of hell.
Why then, does Pike express his surprise in the words "Lucifer, the
light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness!
Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its
intolerable light blinds feeble, sensual or selfish souls?" He is upset,
referring at one point to "the false Lucifer of the legend." What
false legend?"
"I set out to learn for myself, and
what I learned may upset many Christians, who have to be told that the King
James version of the Bible, which they revere as the literal, precise, correct
work of God, is not always so. Some of the error in it was quite deliberate,
including the biblical designation of Lucifer as Satan, along with the
concordant story of a fallen angel. It is difficult to anticipate the reactions
of some believers on being told that there are gross mistakes in the King James
version, but, please, do not throw this book across the room in disgust until
you have read a bit more."
"Lucifer makes his appearance in the
fourteenth chapter of the Old Testament book of Isaiah, at the twelfth verse,
and nowhere else: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the
morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the
nations!""
"The first problem is that Lucifer is
a Latin name. So how did it find its way into a Hebrew manuscript, written
before there was a Roman language? To find the answer, I consulted a scholar at
the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. What Hebrew name, I
asked, was Satan given in this chapter of Isaiah, which describes the angel who
fell to become the ruler of hell? The answer was a surprise. In the original
Hebrew text, the fourteenth chapter of Isaiah is not about a fallen angel, but
about a fallen Babylonian king, who during his lifetime had persecuted the
children of Israel. It contains no mention of Satan, either by name or
reference. The Hebrew scholar could only speculate that some early Christian
scribes, writing in the Latin tongue used by the Church, had decided for
themselves that they wanted the story to be about a fallen angel, a creature not
even mentioned in the original Hebrew text, and to whom they gave the name
"Lucifer.""
"Why Lucifer? In Roman astronomy,
Lucifer was the name given to the morning star (the star we now know by another
Roman name, Venus). The morning star appears in the heavens just before dawn,
heralding the rising sun. The name derives from the Latin term lucem ferre,
"bringer, or bearer, of light." In the Hebrew text the expression used
to describe the Babylonian king before his death is Helal, son of Shahar, which
can best be translated as "Day star, son of the Dawn." The name evokes
the golden glitter of a proud king's dress and court (much as his personal
splendor earned for King Louis XIV of France the appellation, "The Sun
King")."
"The scholars authorized by the
militantly Catholic King James I to translate the Bible into current English did
not use the original Hebrew texts, but used versions translated from the
Catholic Vulgate Bible produced largely by St. Jerome in the fourth century.
Jerome had mistranslated the Hebraic metaphor, "Day star, son of the
Dawn," as "Lucifer," and over the centuries a metamorphosis took
place. Lucifer the morning star became a disobedient angel, cast out of heaven
to rule eternally in hell. Theologians, writers, and poets interwove the myth
with the doctrine of the Fall, and in Christian tradition Lucifer is now the
same as Satan, the Devil, and - ironically- the Prince of Darkness."
"So "Lucifer" is nothing
more than an ancient Latin name for the morning star, the bringer of light. That
can be confusing for Christians who identify Christ himself as the morning star,
a term used as a central theme in many Christian sermons. Jesus refers to
himself as the morning star in Revelation 22:16: "I Jesus have sent mine
angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the
offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.""
"And so there are those who do not
read beyond the King James version of the Bible, who say "Lucifer is Satan:
so says the Word of God," while others with knowledge of the Latin and
Hebrew texts say, "No, Lucifer is the classical Roman name for the morning
star, and now Jesus is the morning star." This discussion can only anger
certain fundamentalists. (I have at hand an evangelical tract from a Baptist
church that says, "I believe in the Infallibility and Preservation of God's
Word, of which the King James 1611 authorized version is the God-guided faithful
translation.")"
"Fortunately, this issue of errors in
biblical translations is not one that we have to struggle with ourselves.
Generations of biblical scholars of all faiths have been aware of the
mistranslations and of the misunderstandings that arise from the use of archaic
terms whose meanings have been lost, or have evolved into different usages. To
address these problems a conference was held in October 1946, attended by
delegates of the Church of England, the Church of Scotland, and the Baptists,
Methodists, and Congregationalist churches. At another meeting four months
later, delegates from the Presbyterians and Quakers joined the original group,
along with representatives of various Bible societies. Still later, observers
were sent as representatives of the Roman Catholic Church."
"The work on a new translation of the
Bible, direct from the sources, stretched out over several years. The most
distinguished biblical scholars and specialists in the world were invited to
contribute, and every delegate was given the opportunity to review and express
his own views on every verse, every word, as presented by the translators."
"The result of this prodigious joint
effort was The New English Bible, of which the New Testament was published in
1969 and the Old Testament one year later."
"That does not mean that I have cast
aside my King James version: I have them both. But I must recognize that while
God may be the inspirational source of all the Old and New Testament scriptures,
He is certainly not responsible for the imperfect translations from the language
of the earliest surviving texts. To err is human, and men can become overzealous
because of the emotional aspects of the subject."
"To the point, the verse in the King
James version (Isaiah 14:12) that begins "How art thou fallen from heaven,
0 Lucifer..." has now been translated directly from the Hebrew in the New
English Biible as "How you have fallen from heaven, bright morning
star..." There is no mention of Lucifer, no reference to any disobedient
angel plunging to hell, nor should there be."
"The emphasis here should be on
intent. When Albert Pike and other Masonic scholars spoke over a century ago
about the "Luciferian path," or the "energies of Lucifer,"
they were referring to the morning star, the light bearer, the search for light;
the very antithesis of dark, satanic evil."
"Still, I believe that Pike was wrong
to use Lucifer in the scholarly sense. I remember an old man saying to me years
ago, on a different subject, "It may be correct, but it just ain't
right!" He had an excellent point. To be "correct" may be good
for scholars writing for the enlightenment of other scholars: but for those with
a real desire to communicate, recognition must be given to the common usage of
words and terms. To this day some learned writers, as did Pike, have difficulty
concentrating on communication, which may require explaining their terms of
reference and curbing their vocabularial excess. To engage in the arrant
pedantry of egregious sesquipedalianism (as in this sentence) is not
communication. It's showing off. Pike must have known that virtually every
Christian of this time firmly believed that Lucifer was Satan. He should have
explained his use of the name, or he should have avoided it. And he should have
held his scholarly vocabulary in check. However impressive the command of a
language a writer may possess, if it cannot be understood as intended and
baffles the reader, it is failing in its primary purpose, which should be clear,
understandable communication."
"Unfortunately, even if Albert Pike
had refined his cumbersome style, or reduced the overwhelming variety of
information he offered in his works, he would still be the target of vitriolic
abuse. The reason is a proved and blatant forgery that is brandished to the
great joy and delight of almost every anti-Masonic writer and speaker."
"It all began in the late nineteenth
century with a man who would do anything, say anything, or write anything to
further his own career, untroubled by conscience or morality. His pen name was Leo
Taxil. To fully understand the source of much of today's most bitter
anti-Masonry, it is necessary to drop back about a hundred years and examine the
career of this strange man who, to serve his own ends, maliciously draped the
mantle of Lucifer as Satan on the memory of Albert Pike."

THE CHRISTIAN SCHEME(5)
SATAN:
Lucifer
ELIPHAS LÉVI seeks to
explain the dogma of his Church by paradoxes and metaphors, but succeeds very
poorly in the face of the many volumes written by pious Roman Catholic
demonologists under the approbation and auspices of Rome, in this nineteenth
century of ours. For the true Roman Catholic, the devil or Satan is a
reality; the drama enacted in the sidereal light according to the seer of
Patmos -- who desired, perhaps, to improve upon the narrative in the "Book
of Enoch" -- is as real, and as historical a fact as any other allegory and
symbolical event in the Bible. But the Initiates give an explanation which
differs from that given by Eliphas Lévi, whose genius and crafty intellect had
to submit to a certain compromise dictated to him from Rome.
Thus, the true and uncompromising
Kabalists admit that, for all purposes of Science and philosophy, it is
enough that the profane should know that the great magic agent called by the
followers of the Marquis de St. Martin -- the Martinists -- astral light, by the
mediæval Kabalists and Alchemists the Sidereal Virgin and the Mysterium
Magnum, and by the Eastern Occultists Æther, the reflection of Akâsa --
is that which the Church calls Lucifer. That the Latin scholastics have
succeeded in transforming the universal soul and Pleroma, the vehicle of
Light and the receptacle of all the forms, a force spread throughout the
whole Universe, with its direct and indirect effects, into Satan and his works,
is no news to any one. But now they are prepared to give out to the
above-mentioned profane even the secrets hinted at by Eliphas Lévi without adequate
explanation; for the latter's policy of veiled revelations could only lead
to further superstition and misunderstanding. What, indeed, can a student of
Occultism, a beginner, gather from the following highly poetical
sentences of Eliphas Lévi, as apocalyptic as the writings of any of the
Alchemists?
Lucifer, the Astral
Light ... is an intermediate force existing in all creation, it serves to
create and to destroy, and the Fall of Adam was an erotic intoxication which
has rendered his generation a slave to this fatal light ... every sexual
passion that overpowers our senses is a whirlwind of that light which seeks to
drag us towards the abyss of death, Folly. Hallucinations, visions, extasies
are all forms of a very dangerous excitation due to this interior
phosphorus (?). Thus light, finally, is of the nature of fire, the
intelligent use of which warms and vivifies, and the excess of which, on the
contrary, dissolves and annihilates. Thus man is called upon to assume a
sovereign empire over that (astral) light and conquer thereby his immortality,
and is threatened at the same time with being intoxicated, absorbed, and
eternally destroyed by it. This light, therefore, inasmuch as it is devouring,
revengeful, and fatal, would thus really be hellfire, the serpent of the
legend; the tormented errors of which it is full, the tears and the gnashing
of teeth of the abortive beings it devours, the phantom of life that escapes
them, and seems to mock and insult their agony, all this would be the devil or
Satan indeed. (Histoire de la Magie, p. 197).
There is no wrong
statement in all this; nothing save a superabundance of ill-applied metaphors,
as in the application of Adam -- a myth -- to the illustration of the
astral effects. Akâsa -- the astral light(1)
-- can be defined in a few words; it is the universal Soul, the Matrix of the
Universe, the "Mysterium Magnum" from which all that exists is born by
separation or differentiation. It is the cause of existence; it fills all
the infinite Space; is Space itself, in one sense, or both its Sixth and
Seventh principles.(2) But as the
finite in the Infinite, as regards manifestation, this light must have its
shadowy side -- as already remarked. And as the infinite can never be
manifested, hence the finite world has to be satisfied with the shadow alone,
which its actions draw upon humanity and which men attract and force to
activity. Hence, while it is the universal Cause in its unmanifested
unity and infinity, the Astral light becomes, with regard to Mankind, simply the
effects of the causes produced by men in their sinful lives. It is not its
bright denizens -- whether they are called Spirits of Light or Darkness -- that
produce Good or Evil, but mankind itself that determines the unavoidable action
and reaction in the great magic agent. It is mankind which has become the
"Serpent of Genesis," and thus causes daily and hourly the Fall and
sin of the "Celestial Virgin" -- which thus becomes the Mother of gods
and devils at one and the same time; for she is the ever-loving, beneficent
deity to all those who stir her Soul and heart, instead of attracting to
themselves her shadowy manifested essence, called by Eliphas Lévi -- "the
fatal light" which kills and destroys. Humanity, in its units, can
overpower and master its effects; but only by the holiness of their lives and by
producing good causes. It has power only on the manifested lower principles
-- the shadow of the Unknown and Incognizable Deity. But in antiquity and reality,
Lucifer, or Luciferus, is the name of the angelic Entity presiding over
the light of truth as over the light of the day. In the great Valentinian
gospel Pistis Sophia (§ 361) it is taught that of the three powers
emanating from the Holy names of the Three, that of Sophia (the Holy Ghost
according to these gnostics -- the most cultured of all), resides in the planet
Venus or Lucifer.
Thus to the profane, the
Astral Light may be God and Devil at once -- Demon est Deus inversus: that
is to say, through every point of Infinite Space thrill the magnetic and
electrical currents of animate Nature, the life-giving and death-giving
waves, for death on earth becomes life on another plane. Lucifer is
divine and terrestrial light, the "Holy Ghost" and "Satan,"
at one and the same time, visible Space being truly filled with the
differentiated Breath invisibly; and the Astral Light, the manifested effects of
the two who are one, guided and attracted by ourselves, is the Karma of
humanity, both a personal and impersonal entity: personal, because it is the
mystic name given by St. Martin to the Host of divine Creators, guides and
rulers of this planet; impersonal, as the Cause and effect of universal
Life and Death.
The Fall was the result
of man's knowledge, for his "eyes were opened." Indeed, he was
taught Wisdom and the hidden knowledge by the "Fallen Angel," for the
latter had become from that day his Manas, Mind and Self-consciousness.
In each of us that golden thread of continuous life -- periodically broken into
active and passive cycles of sensuous existence on Earth, and super-sensuous in
Devachan -- is from the beginning of our appearance upon this earth. It
is the Sutrâtma, the luminous thread of immortal impersonal monadship,
on which our earthly lives or evanescent Egos are strung as so many beads
-- according to the beautiful expression of Vedantic philosophy.
And now it stands proven
that Satan, or the Red Fiery Dragon, the "Lord of Phosphorus"
(brimstone was a theological improvement), and Lucifer, or
"Light-Bearer," is in us: it is our Mind -- our tempter and
Redeemer, our intelligent liberator and Saviour from pure animalism. Without
this principle -- the emanation of the very essence of the pure divine principle
Mahat (Intelligence), which radiates direct from the Divine mind --
we would be surely no better than animals. The first man Adam was made only a living
soul (nephesh), the last Adam was made a quickening Spirit,(3)
says Paul, his words referring to the building or Creation of man.
Without this quickening spirit, or human Mind or soul, there would
be no difference between man and beast; as there is none, in fact, between
animals with respect to their actions. The tiger and the donkey, the hawk and
the dove, are each one as pure and as innocent as the other, because irresponsible.
Each follows its instinct, the tiger and the hawk killing with the same
unconcern as the donkey eats a thistle, or the dove pecks at a grain of corn. If
the Fall had the significance given to it by theology; if that fall occurred as
a result of an act never intended by nature, -- a sin, how about the
animals? If we are told that they procreate their species in consequence of that
same "original sin," for which God cursed the earth -- hence
everything living on it -- we will put another question. We are told by
theology, as by Science, that the animal was on earth far earlier than man? We
ask the former: How did it procreate its species, before the fruit of the
Tree of Knowledge, of the Good and the Evil, had been plucked off? As said:
"The Christians -- far less clear-sighted than the great Mystic and
Liberator whose name they have assumed, whose doctrines they have misunderstood
and travestied, and whose memory they have blackened by their deeds --
took the Jewish Jehovah as he was, and of course strove vainly to reconcile the Gospel
of Light and Liberty with the Deity of Darkness and Submission." (War
in Heaven.)(4)
But it is sufficiently
proven now that all the soi-disant evil Spirits who are credited with
having made war on the gods, are identical as personalities; moreover, that all
the ancient religions taught the same tenet save the final conclusion, which
latter differs from the Christian. The seven primeval gods had all a dual state,
one essential, the other accidental. In their essential state they were all the
"Builders" or Fashioners, the Preservers and the rulers of this
world, and in the accidental state, clothing themselves in visible corporeality,
they descended on the earth and reigned on it as Kings and Instructors of the
lower Hosts, who had incarnated once more upon it as men.
Thus, esoteric philosophy
shows that man is truly the manifested deity in both its aspects -- good and
evil, but theology cannot admit this philosophical truth. Teaching the dogma of
the Fallen Angels in its dead-letter meaning, and having made of Satan the
cornerstone and pillar of the dogma of redemption -- to do so would be suicidal.
Having once shown the rebellious angels distinct from God and the Logos
in their personalities, the admission that the downfall of the disobedient Spirits
meant simply their fall into generation and matter, would be equivalent to
saying that God and Satan were identical. For since the LOGOS (or God) is the
aggregate of that once divine Host accused of having fallen, it would follow
that the Logos and Satan are one.
Yet such was the real
philosophical view of the now disfigured tenet in antiquity. The Verbum,
or the "Son," was shown in a dual aspect by the Pagan Gnostics -- in
fact, he was a duality in full unity. Hence, the endless and
various national versions. The Greeks had Jupiter, the son of Chronos, the
Father, who hurls him down into the depths of Kosmos. The Aryans had Brahmâ (in
later theology) precipitated by Siva into the Abyss of Darkness, etc., etc. But
the fall of all these Logoi and Demiurgi from their primitive exalted position,
had in all cases one and the same esoteric signification in it; the curse --
in its philosophical meaning -- of being incarnated on this earth; an
unavoidable rung on the ladder of cosmic evolution, a highly philosophical and
fitting Karmic law, without which the presence of Evil on Earth would have to
remain for ever a closed mystery to the understanding of true philosophy. To
say, as the author of the Esprits Tombés des Paiens (p. 347) does, that
since "Christianity is made to rest on two pillars, that of evil and of
good; on two forces, in short: hence, if we suppress the punishment of the evil
forces, the protecting mission of the good Powers will have neither value
nor sense" -- is to utter the most unphilosophical absurdity. If it fits in
with, and explains Christian dogma, it obscures the facts and truths of the
primitive wisdom of the ages. The cautious hints of Paul have all the true
esoteric meaning, and it took centuries of scholastic casuistry to give them the
present false colouring in their interpretation. The verbum and Lucifer
are one in their dual aspect; and the "Prince of the Air" is not
the "God of that period," but an everlasting principle. If the
latter was said to be ever circling around the world, the great Apostle
referred simply to the never-ceasing cycles of human incarnations, in which evil
will ever predominate unto the day when Humanity is redeemed by the true divine
Enlightenment which gives the correct perception of things.... The identity of
thought and meaning is the one thing that strikes the student in all the
religions which mention the tradition of the fallen Spirits, and in those
greater religions there is not one that fails to mention and describe it in one
or another form.

Says Johannes, Tritheim, the Abbot of Spanheim, the greatest astrologer and
Kabalist of his day:-- "The art of divine magic consists in the ability to
perceive the essence of things in the light of nature (astral light), and by
using the soul-powers of the spirit to produce material things from the unseen
universe, and in such operations the Above and the Below must be brought
together and made to act harmoniously. The spirit of Nature (astral light) is a
unity creating and forming everything, and acting through the instrumentality of
man it may produce wonderful things. Such processes take place according to law.
You will learn the law by which these things are accomplished, if you learn to
know yourself. You will know it by the Power of the spirit that is in yourself,
and accomplish it by mixing your spirit with the essence that comes out of
yourself. If you wish to succeed in such a work you must know how to separate
Spirit and Life in Nature, and, moreover, to separate the astral soul in
yourself and to make it tangible, and then the substance of the soul will appear
visibly and tangibly rendered objective by the power of the spirit" --
(Quoted in Dr. Hartman's Paracelsus.)

The real original text of I Corinthians, rendered Kabalistically and
esoterically would read (15:44-5): "It is sown a soul body (not
'natural' body), it is raised a spirit body." St. Paul was an
Initiate, and his words have quite a different meaning when read esoterically.
The body "is sown in weakness (passivity); it is raised in
power" (43) -- or in spirituality and intellect.

Godolphin Mitford, later in life, Murad Ali Bey. Born in India, the son of a
Missionary, G. Mitford was converted to Islam, and died a Mahomedan in 1884. He
was a most extraordinary Mystic, of a great learning and remarkable
intelligence. But he left the Right Path and forthwith fell under Karmic
retribution. As well shown by the author of the article quoted "The
followers of the defeated Elohim, first massacred by the victorious Jews (the
Jehovites), and then persuaded by the victorious Christians and Mohamedans,
continued nevertheless.... Some of these scattered sects have lost even the
tradition of the true rationale of their belief -- to worship in secrecy and
mystery the Principle of Fire, Light, and Liberty. Why do the Sabean Bedouins
(avowedly Monotheists when dwelling in the Mohamedan cities) in the solitude of
the desert night yet invoke the starry 'Host of Heaven'? Why do the Yezidis, the
'Devil Worshippers,' worship the 'Muluk-Taoos' -- The 'Lord Peacock' -- the
emblem of pride and of hundred-eyed intelligence (and of Initiation also), which
was expelled from heaven with Satan, according to an old Oriental tradition? Why
do the Gholaites and their kindred Mesopotamo-Iranian Mohamedan Sects believe in
the 'Noor Illahee' -- the Light of the Elohim -- transmitted in anastasis through
a hundred Prophet Leaders? It is because they have continued in ignorant
superstition the traditional religion of the 'Light Deities whom Jahveh
overthrew' (is said to have overthrown rather); for by overthrowing them
he would have overthrown himself. The 'Muluk-Taoos' -- is Maluk --
'Ruler' as is shown in the foot-note. It is only a new form of Moloch, Melek,
Molech, Malayak, and Malachim" -- Messengers, Angels, etc.

FALSE LUCIFER
OF PURE LEGEND

Subject: Lucifer legend and myth
I have not deliberately set out to be contriversal, but intend to question every
facit of the Christian faith, trying the spirits, seeking the reaction and
re-evaluating the results. These are not always my own words but in the main the
collection of the best questioning minds of other peole concerned about the
truth for the love of the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. "I set out to
learn for myself, and what I learned may upset many Christians, who have to be
told that the King James version of the Bible, which they revere as the literal,
precise, correct work of God, is not always so. Some of the error in it was
quite deliberate, including the biblical designation of Lucifer as Satan,
(Lucifer mention soely ONCE in scriptures) along with the concordant story of a
fallen angel. It is difficult to anticipate the reactions of some believers on
being told that there are gross mistakes in the King James version, but, please,
do not throw this book across the room in disgust until you have read a bit
more."
"Lucifer makes his appearance in the fourteenth chapter of the Old
Testament book of Isaiah, at the twelfth verse, and nowhere else: "How art
thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to
the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"
"The first problem is that Lucifer is a Latin name. So how did it find its
way into a Hebrew manuscript, written before there was a Roman language? To find
the answer, I consulted a scholar at the library of the Hebrew Union College in
Cincinnati. What Hebrew name, I asked, was Satan given in this chapter of
Isaiah, which describes the angel who fell to become the ruler of hell? The
answer was a surprise. In the original Hebrew text, the fourteenth chapter of
Isaiah is not about a fallen angel, but about a fallen Babylonian king, who
during his lifetime had persecuted the children of Israel. It contains no
mention of Satan, either by name or reference. The Hebrew scholar could only
speculate that some early Christian scribes, writing in the Latin tongue used by
the Church, had decided for themselves that they wanted the story to be about a
fallen angel, a creature not even mentioned in the original Hebrew text, and to
whom they gave the name "Lucifer.""
"Why Lucifer? In Roman astronomy, Lucifer was the name given to the morning
star (the star we now know by another Roman name, Venus-"The Evening and
Morning Star"). The morning star remains in the heavens in the southern
hemisphere from evening at dusk to just before dawn, heralding the rising sun.
The name derives from the Latin term lucem ferre, "bringer, or bearer, of
light." In the Hebrew text the expression used to describe the Babylonian
king before his death is Helal, son of Shahar, which can best be translated as
"Day star, son of the Dawn." The name evokes the golden glitter of a
proud king's dress and court (much as his personal splendor earned for King
Louis XIV of France the appellation, "The Sun King")."
"The scholars authorized by the militantly Catholic King James I to
translate the Bible into current English did not use the original Hebrew texts,
but used versions translated from the Catholic Vulgate Bible produced largely by
St. Jerome in the fourth century. Jerome had mistranslated the Hebraic metaphor,
"Day star, son of the Dawn," as "Lucifer," and over the
centuries a metamorphosis took place. Lucifer the morning star became a
disobedient angel, cast out of heaven to rule eternally in hell. Theologians,
writers, and poets interwove the myth with the doctrine of the Fall, and in
Christian tradition Lucifer is now the same as Satan, the Devil, and -
ironically- the Prince of Darkness."
"So "Lucifer" is nothing more than an ancient Latin name for the
morning star, the bringer of light. That can be confusing for Christians who
identify Christ himself as the morning star, a term used as a central theme in
many Christian sermons. Jesus refers to himself as the morning star in
Revelation 22:16: "I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these
things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright
and morning star.""
"And so there are those who do not read beyond the King James version of
the Bible, who say "Lucifer is Satan: so says the Word of God," while
others with knowledge of the Latin and Hebrew texts say, "No, Lucifer is
the classical Roman name for the morning star, and now Jesus is the morning
star." This discussion can only anger certain fundamentalists. (I have at
hand an evangelical tract from a Baptist church that says, "I believe in
the Infallibility and Preservation of God's Word, of which the King James 1611
authorized version is the God-guided faithful translation.")"
"Fortunately, this issue of errors in biblical translations is not one that
we have to struggle with ourselves. Generations of biblical scholars of all
faiths have been aware of the mistranslations and of the misunderstandings that
arise from the use of archaic terms whose meanings have been lost, or have
evolved into different usages. To address these problems a conference was held
in October 1946, attended by delegates of the Church of England, the Church of
Scotland, and the Baptists, Methodists, and Congregationalist churches. At
another meeting four months later, delegates from the Presbyterians and Quakers
joined the original group, along with representatives of various Bible
societies. Still later, observers were sent as representatives of the Roman
Catholic Church."
"The work on a new translation of the Bible, direct from the sources,
stretched out over several years. The most distinguished biblical scholars and
specialists in the world were invited to contribute, and every delegate was
given the opportunity to review and express his own views on every verse, every
word, as presented by the translators."
"The result of this prodigious joint effort was The New English Bible, of
which the New Testament was published in 1969 and the Old Testament one year
later."
"That does not mean that I have cast aside my King James version: I have
them both. But I must recognize that while God may be the inspirational source
of all the Old and New Testament scriptures, He is certainly not responsible for
the imperfect translations from the language of the earliest surviving texts. To
err is human, and men can become overzealous because of the emotional aspects of
the subject."
"To the point, the verse in the King James version (Isaiah 14:12) that
begins "How art thou fallen from heaven, 0 Lucifer..." has now been
translated directly from the Hebrew in the New English Biible as "How you
have fallen from heaven, bright morning star..." There is no mention of
Lucifer, no reference to any disobedient angel plunging to hell, nor should
there be."
Newspaper coverage of a speech
by Otto Rahn in 1938
Otto Rahn, the young poet and
researcher read and lectured Friday evening at the Dietrich Eckart Verein (club)
in front of a rather large and very captivated audience. After a few
introductory words by the person in charge of cultural events for the Dietrich
Eckart Verein, Kurt Eggers, who greeted Rahn as a comrade and briefly outlined
the Lucifer-Problem which Rahn would talk about. Next Rahn created an image of
Lucifer in such emphatic and compelling language that it could not be thought
out in a more moving and explicit manner. Rahn read from his newest work, "Luzifers
Hofgesind" (Lucifer's Court Servants), which tells about his travels
and findings in Southern France where he followed the traces of the Grail and
the Albigenses (Cathars), the pure and true heretics, and from new viewpoints,
he drew a prolific picture of this anti-Roman movement which also spread in
Germany at that time. The lecture covered difficult material and required
extreme discipline and alertness. It was a good sign for the symbioses of
lecturer and audience that no word was lost and that the image of Lucifer, which
Rahn celebrated with the Albigenses as the Bringer of Light, was most effective.
Two parts of the evening can clearly be
differentiated: The first, where Rahn reported on the research and current
status of the Grail and Lucifer-Problem - here the most powerful words and the
most exciting creative power came into play - and a second, in which the
lecturer based on concrete examples drew conclusions from his new points of view
and teachings and arrived at a not only interesting but also largely convincing
reevaluation of historical events, leading figures, and facts. The hurdle of a
rationalism of the old kind - a danger which would without doubt exist for a
less truthful and strong acceptance of nature and reevaluation - was avoided by
Rahn very well. In true excitement, he again led back to the sources and origins
of real desire for freedom and true closeness to nature.
The Albigenses have been exterminated.
In Southern France, 205 leading followers of Lucifer were burnt on a giant stake
(March 16, 1244) after a great crusade led by Dominican priests in the name of
Christian mildness. The teachings of Lucifer, the Bringer of Light, and his
followers were persecuted with fire and sword. The Albigenses are dead, but
their spirit is alive and takes effect, especially in these days, in a renewed
and rejuvenated excitement and passion. Christ's representative could burn
people, but he was wrong when he thought he could burn with them their spirit,
passion and desire. This spirit became alive again yesterday, took its effect
and was visible in Otto Rahn - a descendent of the ancient Troubadours - in
front of many people.
Rahn set a new limit to the spirit tied
to the Romans, to the belief in a life after death, and the fear of hell; he
negated Yahweh and the Jewish teachings, and professed "Luzifer's Hofgesind"
in whose name Kurt Eggers closed the evening with the following greeting:
"Lucifer, who has been done wrong to, greets you."
Altogether the evening was a great
success, which was a promising beginning for the future work of the Dietrich
Eckart Verein. The quartet of the Conservatory provided an excellent setting for
the evening and furnished the artistic background for the multitude and richness
of thoughts.

The Keys to Hell and Death
Part II
By Richard Edmondson
U.S. Army reserve Lieutenant Colonel Michael Aquino,
a Defense Department expert on psychological warfare, was named as a suspect in
a child molestation case in San Francisco in 1987. However, formal charges
against Aquino were never filed in the case, known as the “Presidiochild
molestation case,” in which more than 50 children were reported tohave been
molested who attended a day care center on a U.S. Army base. Aquino is founder
of the Temple of Set, a satanic church based in San Francisco, and he figures
prominently in the book, “TRANCE-Formation ofAmerica,” by Mark Phillips and
Cathy O’Brien. Yesterday we brought youpart one of this report. Today we
continue with part two.
FASCISM AND THE OCCULT
The U.S. government’s fascination for covert use
of the occult has its historical precedent in Nazi Germany.
Both Hitler and Heinrich Himmler, Nazi SS chief,
were heavily immersed in the occult, Hitler having come into contact with Jorg
Lanz von Liebenfels and his Order of the New Templars as early as 1909.
Hitler became an avid reader of Lanz’s magazine,
“Ostara,” a publicationwhich “combined the erotic with the occult,”
while also producing racistrantings which were “remarkably similar to Hitler’s
later utterances,”according to Dusty Sklar in her book, “Gods and Beasts:
The Nazis andthe Occult.” (Thomas Y. Crowell Company, New York, 1977). Another
occultist who was influential in Nazi circles was the professor, Karl Hauschofer,
who is said to have virtually dictated chapter 16 of Hitler’s autobiography,
Mein Kampf. For Haushofer, a love affair with the Orient began in 1908 when he
was sent to Tokyo as an advisor to the Japanese Army.
He studied Sanskrit and translated several Hindu and
Buddist texts, eventually ending up in “the esoteric stream of Satanism,
through whichhe sought to raise Germany to the pinnacle of world power.” (Sklar,
p.63).
(Haushofer wound up being paid tribute by San
Francisco Satanist Anton LeVey, in whose book, The Satanic Bible, published in
1969, can be found a dedication: “To Karl Haushofer, a teacher without a
classroom.”). As for Lanz, he ended up joining the Germanen Orden (in 1912),
which in turn eventually merged with the Thule Society, whose membership, by
1918, reached 1,500 in Bavaria alone.
“This powerful occult circle included adepts,
judges, lawyers, professors, leading industrialists, surgeons, scientists, and
even former members of the royal entourage of the Wittelsbach kings. The
Bavarian minister of justice, Franz Gurtner; the police president of Munich,
Ernst Pohner; and the assistant police chief, Wilhelm Frick, were active.” (Sklar,
p. 42). Couching their rhetoric in rabid anti-Semitism, Thule members prophesied
the coming of a German messiah “who would do away with hated democracy, the
handmaiden of the weak,” says Sklar. There was also a great deal of rhetoric
about the “divine self” and the powers which would accrue to those who
followed the true path.
The latter especially is not dissimilar from the
sort of mystic psychobabble which can be found on Temple of Set web sites today.
“Temple of Set seeks above all to honor and
enshrine consciousness…”says the church’s official Web site. “The
Left-Hand Path is a process for creating an individual, powerful essence that
exists above and beyond animal life.” Other celebrated personages drawn to the
German occult scene included the American industrialist Andrew Melon.
According to Sklar, “Melon’s
interest in the occult resulted in a huge collection of books on the subject,
stretching back to antiquity, which he donated to Yale.” (Sklar, p. 138).
Yale, it should be noted, is the home of the notorious Skull and Bones Society,
out of which sprang George H.W. Bush and other American political figures. (SFLR
DJ Scott Thompson has provided research on ties to Nazi Germany between the Bush
family, as well as leading American industrialists. See previous issues of the
SFLR News at the following links:
http://www.firstworld.net/~dove/SFLR_News_7-26-00.html
http://www.firstworld.net/~dove/SFLR_News_7-23-99.html
http://www.firstworld.net/~dove/SFLR_News_8-22-99.html
So how serious were top level Nazi strategists about
the occult, and did they really feel that use of the “black arts” would help
them win the war? Again Sklar provides insight:
“The most incredible research of all was set up in
1939 in Berlin. An astrologer, Wilhelm Wulff, who was made prisoner of the SS
and coerced into working for it, described the Berlin Institute’s scientific
research center as being used ‘to harness, not only natural, but also
supernatural forces. All intellectual, natural, and supernatural sources of
power--from modern technology to medieval black magic, and from the teachings of
Pythagoras, to the Faustian pentagram incantation--were to be exploited in the
interests of final victory.’” These paranormal investigations by the Berlin
Institute are perhaps not so very different from the CIA’s own research into
“remote viewing.” Practitioners of this art, to which the U.S. government
has devoted untold sums of money, are said not only to be able to “see”
events taking place on the other side of the globe, but also to gain glimpses
backward and forward into time.
Self-espoused remote-viewers such as former U.S.
Army Major Ed Dames, a frequent guest on the late night Art Bell radio show,
claim to have penetrated enemy defenses and obtained vital intelligence data in
such a manner.
Dames further claims to have “remote viewed Satan.”
Such watery notions might easily be dismissed as the meandering of a charlatan,
however, their psychological value, disseminated as they are via a nightly talk
show reaching millions, cannot be denied.
If after all the CIA employs, as Dames asserts, a
secret cabal of remote viewers, what possible hope could there be for resistance
against the U.S. government--either internally or from abroad?
Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels similarly
exploited occultic fare and belief, pointing to the quatrains of 16th century
French prophet Nostradamus as affirmation of the “inevitability” of German
world conquest.
The end result of all this was a nation traumatized,
not so terribly unlike O’Brien herself was traumatized. Such traumatization
had a powerful impact on the thinking of individual German citizens--even among
those inclined toward opposition to Nazi policies.
Sklar tells the story of a young teacher, the
daughter of a liberal college professor, who joined the party under pressure.
“At first I just made myself do it. The Nazi
accounts were so fantastic--plots of world-Jewry, etc.--that I could hardly keep
from laughing as I read them; but of course I had to be careful. It was somewhat
of a shock to find how readily the children accepted these Nazi fabrications.
But the most amazing thing of all was, that after a few years of going through
the routine, I began to believe the stories myself and could no longer
distinguish in my own mind between propaganda and truth.” (Sklar, p.
111).
ABOVE THE LAW
The connections between Fascism and Satanism are at
least sufficiently pronounced that one Temple of Set Web site, in the interests
of public relations, has even gone so far as to post disclaimers, containing
numerous attempts at “debunking” the “myth” of any fascist/Nazi
sympathies on the part of Aquino or other members.
"I have always deplored its (Nazism's)
premises, policies, and activities which resulted in savagery and misery to a
great many people," Aquino is quoted on one Temple Web site.
However, if the U.S. government, or at least certain
components of it, has covertly embraced the “black art” of satanic worship,
how deep does the affiliation go, and what are the consequences?
Does it, for instance, leave certain murderers and
ritual serial killers above the law in the same manner as the Nazi scientists
who were imported under Project Paperclip?
According to Mark Phillips, who co-authored
TRANCE-Formation along with O’Brien, the CIA began studying occult groups
after World War II, observing especially the impact of occult activity upon the
children of practicing families.
Phillips, who rescued O’Brien from the Project
Monarch program, was employed for many years in the defense industry,
particularly with the Ampex Corporation. As such he was engaged in numerous
projects for the CIA.
Phillips also worked for Capital International
Airways, a CIA-affiliated charter airline service which flew in a lot of the
Project Paperclip scientists.
“The Paperclip scientists were supposed to have
been propulsion-scientists, but in fact the vast majority of them were not,”
Phillips said last month in an interview with San Francisco Liberation Radio.
“These were mind-sciences people--people who had been involved in the field of
psychiatry.” The very same people, says Philips, who had done the pioneering
research into the field of trauma-based mind control--a field the CIA was eager
to study further.
Multi-generationally-abused children of Northern
European families involved in the occult sciences were the Nazi test subjects,
he said.
“This research provided them with extraordinary
results,” says Phillips. “They were seeing children who had photographic
memories, who had 44times the visual acuity of an average individual. In other
words they could practically see out of the backs of their heads.” The
heightened senses and acute memories were coping mechanisms developed by the
traumatized children.
The CIA, says Phillips, picked up the research where
the Nazis left off, zeroing in on satanic groups in the United States--not for
purposes of halting criminal child abuse, but for studying its effects further.
“What they were interested in doing was
introducing trauma into some of these normally benign rituals that these
(occult) groups have or sponsor at certain times of the year. This trauma was
involving blood trauma and that sort of thing, animal sacrifice. And human
sacrifice--as rare as it might sound and as difficult as it is to prove, there
have been many instances over the past few decades that have been proven,”
said Phillips.
He continued:
“But the CIA was interested only in observing and
recording the effects on the ONLOOKERS of these rituals, rather than the
participants per se,” he said.
The families--rather than being broken up and their
adult members prosecuted--were instead studied and tracked over generations.
Whatever crimes were committed along the way, whether child molestation or even
murder, were apparently deemed something akin to a necessary evil.
O’Brien writes in TRANCE: “Like my father and
Cox, Aquino remains above the law.” Indeed, the “black art” of remaining
immune from criminal prosecution seems to have been one of Aquino’s
specialties, used perhaps with skilled precision in the Presidio case.
The children at the Presidio most likely were NOT
undergoing trauma-based mind control.
But just exactly WAS going on at the Presidio
remains puzzling, mainly due to the fact that there never was a trial.
So how did Aquino, a highly decorated Vietnam
veteran and former Green Beret, end up as a suspect in a child molestation case?
According to the San Francisco Chronicle:
“In a police report filed in August, a 3-year-old
girl who attended the Presidio day care center alleges that she was molested at
Aquino’s Russian Hill home by Aquino and Gary Hambright. Hambright, a Baptist
minister, has been formally charged with molesting 10 other children at the Army
base center… “Aquino has strongly denied involvement in the girl’s
molestation, saying he was 3,000 miles away from San Francisco, attending
classes at the National Defense University in Washington at the time.” (SanFrancisco
Chronicle, Nov. 3, 1987, p. A7).
Certainly it would have been easy for a 3-year-old
child to become confused. But apparently she recalled enough to name “Mr. Gary”
and Aquino as her abusers, and to identify Aquino’s house at 2430Leavenworth
St. as the place where the molestation occurred.
Other details were recalled as well, according to
the Chronicle:
“The child told investigators that, at the home,
she was filmed while bathing in a room that had black walls and a cross painted
on the ceiling.” (San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 30, 1987, p. A1). The girl
also recalled that the tub in which she bathed was a “plasticlion bathtub.”
During the August 14 raid, police found “a dark-walled room” plus “paraphernalia
related to Satanism,” reported the Chronicle. (Oct. 31,1987, p. A1).
The molestations were said to have occurred in
September or October of 1986; the girl (who was 3 years old at the time
incidents occurred, but had turned 4 by the time she gave her statements to
police), also alleged that Aquino’s wife, Lilith, was present at the time,
according to reports.
The victim’s father, also in the Army, said that
“four or five times” during the Sept.-Oct. time period he dropped his
daughter off at the child care center, and that at times he noticed something
peculiar.
“The father reported that on two occasions when he
picked up the victim at the end of the day , he was informed by (Hambright) that
the victim had wet her pants…(and the father) was provided with the soiled
panties.’ “But the girl had not wet her pants in a year, the father said. At
about that time, the girl began having nightmares.
“In January 1987, the father learned of an
investigation into child abuse at the center, and he contacted investigators. By
February this year, the child had visited an Army therapist several times, and
had ‘disclosed being molested.’ She blamed the molestations on ‘Mikey’
and ‘Shamby.’ “Events in the following months are not detailed in the
report. But in August, the report says, the girl and her father were shopping in
the Presido PX and the girl suddenly became afraid.
“’The victim ran to (her father) and in a
frightened way clutched his leg. (The father) looked up and saw a man whom he
knew to be Michael Aquino,’ the report says. When she was asked whether she
knew Aquino, she said, ‘Yes, that’s Mikey.’ “A few minutes later, she
told her father that a woman with Aquino was ‘Shamby.’ “In further
interviews, the girl reported that ‘Mr. Gary’ had driven her to a home off
the Army base. There, she said, two men dressed as women performed sexual acts
on her and photographed her.
“The girl indicated that a woman, who dressed as a
man, was in the house but was not clear whether she was directly involved in the
molestations.” (San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 30, 1987, p. A1). The Chronicle
published a photo of Aquino and his wife, Lilith, on Oct. 31--Halloween
day--1987, following what was apparently a press conference by the couple in St.
Louis, where Aquino, according to reports, had been newly re-stationed.
At that time Aquino said he was a student at the
National Defense University at Fort McNear in Washington D.C. during the time
the episodes with the girl were alleged to have occurred. Aquino said that
participating in the molestation “would have required me to commute3,000
miles.” In the photo Aquino is dressed in a suit, gesturing to reporters,
while his wife, garbed in dark clothing, looks on with round, staring eyes
heavily lined with mascara.
The release by police of court records only days
before Halloween may have been something of a psychological warfare tactic of
their own.
In the wake of the exposures, Aquino filed a $1
million claim against the city San Francisco, naming Glen Pamfiloff, an
inspector with the SFPD’s juvenile division, and Officer Sandra Gallent, as
participants in the raid on his home.
While the young girl who identified Aquino in the
Presidio PX seems to have been particularly helpful to police, many other
children, along with their parents, gave statements. “One Presidio mother
close to the probe…said that young children have reported molestations in
bizarre settings that suggest ritual sexual abuse.
“From what I’ve heard, there is a fair number of
children who describe being abused in a place other than the child care center,”
said the mother, who asked to remain anonymous.
“’There have been children stuck with needles in
various parts of their bodies, and they have reported people in costumes and
robes. It all sounds very ritualized.’” (Chronicle, Oct. 31, 1987, p. A1).
Temple members, or “Setians,” profess themselves to be followers of the
ancient Egyptian god Set, which they view as “the oldest known form of the
Prince of Darkness,” and whose worship they trace back to pre-dynastic times.
As the official church Web site explains:
“Set is a more complex, less stereotypical
metaphysical image than that of the Judaeo/Christian Satan. Satan, the archetype
of rebellion against cosmic order and stasis, may be the symbol for many
people's initial commitment to initiation, but this symbol is too tied to
conventional religions and their moral codes to be an effective representation
of the richness, subtlety, and complexity of the Left-Hand Path.” At one point
during the Presidio investigation, the Chronicle obtained a copy of a 1980
resume of Aquino’s, showing the career reservist to be the holder of a
doctoral degree in political science from the University of California at Santa
Barbara.
The resume also states (factually or not) that
Aquino has served as a liaison officer in NATO countries, and that in his
civilian life he has been a licensed securities dealer, registered with the New
York Stock Exchange, and a former employee of Merrill Lynch. The resume,
according to the Chronicle, also states he has written three science fiction
novels.
On Temple of Set Web sites today, where Aquino is
referred to reverently as “Dr. Aquino,” can be found lengthy explanations of
church philosophy, including its conception of black magic.
“Followers of the Left-Hand Path practice what, in
a very specially-defined sense, we term ‘Black Magic.’ Black Magic focuses
on self-determined goals. Its formula is ‘my will be done,’ as opposed to
the White Magic of the Right-Hand Path, whose formula is ‘thy will be done.’
Black Magic is shunned and feared because to do Black Magic is to take full
responsibility for one's actions, evolution, and effectiveness,” according to
the official site. During the Presidio scandal, Aquino, in statements to
reporters, frankly admitted to being the temple’s founder--even as it was
coming out in the media that:
* The Presidio investigation had uncovered a satanic
link to the case * Children were reporting ritual ceremonies with adults dressed
in costumes * The temple’s post office box was located on the base* That one
of the victims had identified Aquino in the Presidio PX, and that additional
children had reportedly identified him after seeing him in TV news reports.
So how did the man at the center of all this
controversy escape prosecution? And how was it that more than 50 children could
be molested on a military base in a major American city without a single
conviction ever being won in the case (the case against Hambright “collapsed”
while Aquino and his wife, Lilith, were never charged)?
Almost immediately from the day the story broke, the
Army took the position that Aquino’s satanic practices were protected by his
First Amendment freedom of religion.
“The question is whether he is trustworthy or can
do the job,” said Major Greg Rixon, Army public affairs officer in Washington.
“There is nothing that would indicate, in this case, that there is any problem
we should be concerned about.” It was interesting that the Army would take
this position with regard to the top-secret security clearance of a practicing
Satanist, while continuing to exclude gays from even its lowest rank and file
positions.
As the Chronicle reported:
“Aquino, a psychological warfare officer who has
worked in military intelligence, holds a top-secret security clearance that
allows him to handle information whose release would ‘gravely’ damage U.S.
security, according to Defense Department regulations.
“He maintains the clearance even though he has
performed Nazi occult rites and has described himself as the ‘Anti-Christ,’
in literature published by the Temple of Set.” (Chronicle, Nov. 3, 1987, p.
A7). Nonetheless, Major Rixon believed Aquino’s freedom of religion was an “absolute
right.” “To the best of my knowledge,” he said, “there is no part of the
liturgy of his church that causes any (security) problem.” This new-found
reverence for the constitutional rights of religious groups was in stark
contrast to the government’s dealings with the MOVE organization in
Philadelphia just two years previous, and with the treatment which would be
meted out to the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas only five years hence.
Nonetheless, the Chronicle would be able to report
just over a year later: “Investigators have thus far been frustrated in their
efforts to prosecute the molesters.” (Chronicle, Dec. 24, 1988, p. A2).
Hambright was indicted twice on federal charges, “but each time the
prosecution collapsed because the children were so young and the evidence often
so vague,” said the Chronicle. The U.S. Attorney in San Francisco at the time
was Joseph P. Russoniello--who would later be mentioned in the “Dark Alliance”
series on Contra cocaine smuggling. That series was produced by reporter Gary
Webb in the San Jose Mercury News in 1996.
In the series Webb reports of a 1988 Senate
subcommittee investigation which ran into a “wall of secrecy at the Justice
Department.” In that case, says Webb, Senate investigators were trying to
determine why Russoniello “had given $36,000 back to a Nicaraguan cocaine
dealer arrested by the FBI.” In the child molestation case, Presidio parents
were reported, by August of 1987, to be “edgy and upset by the reluctance of
the Army, FBI, and (Russoniello’s) office in San Francisco” to discuss
details of the case. One woman told the Chronicle that FBI agents never
interviewed her--even after a doctor confirmed that her son had been molested.
A federal judge (who was not named in the report)
ruled that “key-testimony was hearsay and could not be used as evidence,”
said the Chronicle.
Two arson fires destroyed a building adjacent to the
day care center--one on Sept. 22, 1987, and the other on Oct. 13. And on
November 20, the center was formally closed. U.S. Rep. Barbara Boxer called the
school closing “a blessing.” The San Francisco District Attorney’s office
apparently didn’t make anymore headway in the case than did the U.S. attorney,
saying there was “insufficient evidence” to pursue it.“ District Attorney
Arlo Smith’s decision to close the book on off-base molestation ends the
criminal case,” the Chronicle reported (Aug. 2,1988, p. A6). A bid by Aquino
to have court martial charges pressed against the 3 year old girl’s
father--for making “false allegations” against him--was unsuccessful. Aquino
nonetheless vowed to press ahead with his case--“all the way to the White
House,” if necessary.
TYRANNY,
TREACHERY, TERRORISM & TRAUMA:
A FORMULA FOR TOTALITARIANISM
No doubt about it, there was
a FORMULA utilized by the perpetrators of Nine-One-One. No matter whodunit --it
was a well and precisely planned operation. From Webster's Dictionary, a
definition of 'formula': "A set form of words for use in a ceremony or
ritual".
The
formula can best be described in four simple words:
TYRANNY, TREACHERY,
TERRORISM and TRAUMA.
TYRANNY:
Absolute
power, especially when exercised unjustly or cruelly.
TREACHERY:
Willfull betrayal of fidelity, confidence or trust; perfidy.
TERRORISM:
The systematic use of terror, violence and intimidation to achieve an end.
TRAUMA:
An emotional shock that creates substantial and lasting damage to the
psychological development of the individual, generally leading to neurosis.
Which leads us to.....
TOTALITARIANISM:
A form of government in which one person or party exercises absolute control
over all spheres of human life and opposing parties are not permitted to exist.
Sound familiar ? Where have
we heard this before ?
Has our government betrayed
us ?
Are we being ushered into
the Fourth Reich ?
But....IT COULDN'T HAPPEN
HERE..... Or could it ?
OCCULT RITUAL
AND HOMEGROWN TERRORISM
Was the mass murder and
mayhem, the operation code named Nine-One-One a ceremony or ritual ?
And if so, what kind of
ritual ? For what purpose ?
Was Nine-One-One simply the
most extreme 'international incident' to date in a long-term operation of
'trauma-based programming? '..... part of the 'ritual abuse' of the American
public ?
Worse yet, was it a 'Satanic
Blood Sacrifice' ?
Could these sorts of hideous
rituals be part and parcel of the programming of the collective American psyche
?
If so, to what end ?
Not easy questions to
answer, much less furnish proof for. Yet the answers leap out in a plethora of
dramatic symbols, for those who have eyes to see --and more importantly-- the
freedom of mind to perceive.
PSYCHOLOGICAL
OPERATIONS:
BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION AND MIND CONTROL
For centuries, occultists
have relied on symbols to harness the power of the human mind for use in
rituals. By far, the greatest creative power resides not in the conscious mind,
but in the unconscious, and even more so in the vast reservoir of what Carl Jung
termed the Collective Unconscious. The unconscious 'thinks' in symbols
--pictures-- instead of words. If a picture is worth a thousand words, maybe
that's why.
You don't have to believe in
Jung's theories to understand the power of symbols. Symbols are all around us;
but never more compelling than when they are internalized within the life-force
of the mind. Internalizing a symbol is not hard to do, either by a voluntary act
of conscious will, as in prayer or meditation..... OR by the IMPOSITION OF
SOMEONE ELSE'S will as in hypnotic suggestion, black magic or mind control.
Once a symbol has been
internalized, it takes on a life of its own. And once it digs in and puts down
roots, its power over the mind of the host --for good or ill-- grows as it is
watered and fed by the conscious mind.
The easiest way to 'feed' a
symbol is to use repetition. Flash that symbol --over and over-- in front of the
subject's eyes until the point of saturation. Critical mass.
The perpetrators of mind
control have developed this sort of 'ritual' not only as a science, but to a
near art form. Dominating the energy --individually or collectively-- in the
psyche of the target is the cornerstone of mind control.
THE
TRAUMATIZED MIND
Let's consider the most
potent symbol flashed into our consciousness by the perps of Nine-One-One.
The World Trade center
towers. A raging inferno. People leaping from the windows. A larger-than-life
spectacle of death and destruction. Many writers have noted that there was an
element of unreality in it all --like something you'd see in a movie.
But it wasn't a theatrical
production. It was REAL.
The immediate reaction of
most people witnessing this horror was shock.....
INTENSE
AND PROFOUND TRAUMA. How
could it be otherwise ?
When trauma strikes, the
boundaries protecting the psyche come crashing down. The ability to think
critically and analytically is suspended. Until the shock wears off -- if it
ever does-- the traumatized mind simply REACTS. And it reacts emotionally. A
traumatized mind is vulnerable and therefore far more suggestible. And the
suggestions the mind is most willing to accept are those which it believes will
ensure its PROTECTON and SURVIVAL...at any cost.
This the key to
"trauma-based programming".
Read it and weep:
IT WORKS
Could it be that Operation
Nine-One-One was planned for this precise purpose ? Using terrorism to
traumatize Americans into a mass panic which the perps knew would lead to their
unquestioning and emotionally-based desire for PROTECTION and SURVIVAL...... AT
ANY COST ?
Have many traumatized
Americans been programmed to give up their freedoms in the false, irrational and
emotionally-based belief that they can exchange their freedom for protection and
thus ensure their survival ?
If so, they've made a deal
with the devil, and there'll be hell to pay.
MASS MIND
CONTROL IN AMERICA:
DEEP BLACK COVERT OPERATIONS
It is hard to pinpoint with
precision the beginning of institutionalized use of mind control in America ,
but 1947 was certainly a critical year.
In 1947, the Central
Intelligence Agency was created from its precursor, the Office of Strategic
Services. The agency was staffed predominantly with Nazi scientists brought to
the U.S. under an operation code named Project Paperclip. In 1953, the CIA
'officially' began the MKULTRA mind control program, under the direction of Dr.
Sidney Gottlieb, incorporating roughly 165 sub- projects.
George Hunter White,
colleague of Nazi criminal Sidney Gottlieb, described his involvement in the
CIA's infamous MKULTRA project this way:
"I toiled
wholeheartedly in the vineyards because it was fun, fun, fun.....Where else
could a red-blooded American boy lie, kill, cheat, steal, rape and pillage with
the sanction and blessing of the all- highest? "
Indeed, where else ? Where
else but in America, the Land of the Free and the home of the Brave.
Home of the Criminally
Insane Agency.
Does this utterly demented,
deranged and demonic mind-set tell you anything about the agency -- or the
government-- that could implement such a project, at the cost of unimaginable
human suffering, while the perpetrators are swept merily along in the sadistic
thrill of it all ?
Who can tell us about the
depth of such suffering ?
Maybe we could ask Eric
Olsen. The CIA "suicided" his father, Frank Olsen in 1953, connected
to the MKULTRA operation, then engaged in a massive cover-up. The real story has
only just begun to come out, but the lies and betrayal continue apace.
In 1999 The Expert Witness
Show, hosted by Mike Levine, ran a series of programs about CIA mind control. I
was one of the guests interviewed, as were Eric Olsen and Martin Lee, author of
Acid Dreams, a classic on CIA MKULTRA.
I was asked to appear on the
program as a survivor of MKULTRA. Yet I was given little opportunity to tell my
story. Had I been allowed more air-time, perhaps my testimony would have shed
some light not only on the mind control abuses of the past, well-documented and
eloquently stated by Olsen and Lee, but on the fact that the atrocities of mind
control ARE STILL GOING ON
TO THIS DAY in our country.
Sidney Gottlieb, the
project's founder, was purportedly ordered by DCI to destroy all MKULTRA
documents, circa 1976-77. We know that ALL the documents were not destroyed, as
evidenced by those which remain. However it is my belief that there are many
more documents in existence which have not yet come to light. I believe this
because of my own involvement in MKULTRA and other black projects and also
because this has been confirmed to me by insider sources. Furthermore, I KNOW
the project was NEVER abandoned, as the CIA claims. I know this because I MYSELF
WAS STILL INVOLVED, long after the program was purportedly
"discontinued".
In fact, MKULTRA is still
operating today. The names of its sub- projects may have changed and some of the
players have passed away. But the game remains the same. It didn't stop. It just
went deeper black, that's all.
And what's worse, the scope
of mind control has expanded to include not just a small group of "test
subjects" but the attempted brainwashing of the entire population.
Witness: HAARP Witness: EM
Frequency Weapons Witness: Psychotropic Drugs Witness: Satellite technologies
Witness: biochip implants
And these mind control
systems are only the tip of the iceberg........
In the words of the
psychopath Jose Delgado: "A psycho-civilized society."
A
DEATHBED CONFESSION:
BLOOD SACRIFICE RITUALS AND THE GROUP WITH NO NAME
On the evening of October 6,
I began writing this article. On the morning of October 7, I received e-mail
from an unknown source. Strangely enough, the content of the message fit right
in with what I was writing. It may shed some light into the darkest corners of
the human psyche, as reflected by the body politic. And if true, is chilling to
contemplate.
Subject:
conspiracy tape ? Message: have you seen this ?
I had not, so I clicked on
the URL to a webpage which contained one item: a link to a clip of videotape.
http://cswilson15.home.mindspring.com/
(See it for yourself. )
Text on webpage: " This
is a tape that was made by my father-in- law's client, who was dying of cancer.
He left instructions that he wanted it to be seen. "
The scene opened on a man in
a hospital bed. A full head of white hair and thick black-framed glasses. Tubes
ran from a bedside machine into his right arm.
It was the deathbed
confession of a man who claimed to have worked for 27 years for "the group
with no name". His identity as well, was undetermined.
The man appeared to be
addressing his lawyer, "John" making a confession regarding the
nefarious activities he had been involved in. He appeared agitated and had some
difficulty speaking, so some of his testimony was unintelligible. I've
transcribed it to the the best of my ability here:
"John, this is the last
time you'll hear from me. Thanks for your friendship, your loyalty, thanks for
your hard work. You've been more than just my lawyer, you've been a good friend.
I'm going to ask for one
more favor. Do this thing for me. I'm going to tell you....secrets. These things
are true. I want to tell people....I want people to know...to confess.....
About the Wall Street that
never was.....all lies.
Something else...I've been
working for the group with no name....the way things are done.
I was....management...yes,
bookkeeping...keeping track of the money. They don't care about money...listen,
I can try to explain...but it's difficult...gonna be hard to explain.
I'm not crazy.....You've
heard all those conspiracy stories...Jews, Masons, secret societies....some
truth in it...it sounds insane.
But I tell you, I've seen
terrible things....listen....
The Mayan culture in South
America....Mayans were the first ones....no one discusses these things.
They
killed....[unintelligible]
Harrington was always
talking....he's gone now....leave his name out of it.
They betrayed us.....our
era.
This is the way things are
done. You must have wondered yourself..... what the hell is going on here ? This
is the way things are done. Listen to me...try to understand.
The blood sacrifices they
did down there...hearts were torn out...thousands of them...their own people.
You know why they did it ? It's the power...the power created from pain and
suffering.
There are those who have
ultimate power....who decide how things will go....part of a strategy...part of
a plan.
Let me explain....I was
programmed in the usual ways....Skull and Bones, the Bohemian
Grove....[unintelligible]...so I could be used....
I don't know all that
much....
The reason is the transfer
of power...that's why they do what they do....magic...ancient magic....occult
practices.
They discovered the transfer
of power and energy...know what I'm talking about ?
They discovered certain
practices....you can't even conceive of.... I don't exactly know how it's done.
I avoided finding out...I couldn't stomach it.
The reason they create wars,
atrocities, murder, assassinations, genocide...it creates a form of
power...energy. They use that..... I don't know how....I know it moves... and it
works....I've seen it...horrible things. It's a science...it works.
I wasn't involved in that.
It just came into my life...27 goddamn years !
They told me I'd be there to
witness the end...I was this close ! 27 years...now I won't be there to witness
it.....to see it coming... and to die now.
You know I never
smoked...they do this all the time...it's punishment...no right to do this to
me....
They lied...I kept my end of
the bargain...they said there was no problem. They lied....
Listen.....
May 17...August
9....November 5...November 12...watch...see what happens....then you'll know.
I'm speaking the truth.
There is no way to stop them
! Both sides know how it works....terrorists in the third world....doing the
things we used to do....They've already started killing off the herd...it's in
the water..it's in the air...
It's the way things are.....
I can't put it any clearer
than that...God help me...
Get this goddamn thing away
from me ! Turn it off! " [Waving his arms at the camera.]
End transcript.
Was this tape a hoax ? I
don't believe so. There were too many realistic elements. The hospital setting.
The man's obvious distress and difficulty speaking. To me, it comes off as a
real deathbed confession.
Of course, it proves
nothing. But how much "proof" do we need ?
Haven't we heard and read
about all of this many times before ?......Ad nauseum ?
How many witnesses do we
need ? How many confessions ? How much testimony ?
How many tortured souls ?
How much more bloodshed ?
When is enough, enough ?
FREEDOM IS
NON-NEGOTIABLE
Now I have a few questions
for all self-respecting, freedom-loving American citizens:
Are YOU willing to
"negotiate" with the powers-that-be for YOUR freedom ?
Do you believe that YOUR
freedom, like a license to drive or to practice law, is a priviledge issued by
the state ?
Will you let YOUR freedom
--or lack thereof-- be determined by the covert agenda of the "group with
no name", a cabal of Satanists and bonesmen perpetrating mind control,
fomenting terrorism and engaging in blood sacrifice rituals ?
Or is YOUR freedom --as
protected under the U.S. Constitution-- a GOD-GIVEN RIGHT ?
You decide.
Freedom begins in the mind.
"Give me liberty or
give me death".......Patrick Henry
GOD BLESS AMERICA
Postscript:
I would like to thank all
those people who have shown the courage to stand up for freedom, especially
those researchers and journalists who have worked so hard, for little or no
remuneration, to make the alternative media available to the general public. The
alternative media may truly be the forum for Freedom's Last Stand.

The Shadow Over Santa Susana: Black Magic, Mind
Control and The 'Manson Family' Mythos
Book Review by Jaye C. Beldo aka The Lone Nutter Netnous@aol.com
Did Charles Manson ever have to take Viagra, spray
pheromones all over himself and have his membrane virilis enlarged via a Dr.
Kaplan pump advertised in the back of Penthouse in order to attract the many
faithful female disciples that he did? Not a chance. The 'Gardener of Flower
Children' had the kind of sexual allure that could only be sustained through him
by some of the more magickally gifted of his handlers in the CIA's MK-ULTRA mind
control program, back when they were a class act worth paying attention to.
Currently the agency has gotten a little more hackneyed in the R and D of their
various MK programs. In the name of efficiency, CIA funded Satanists, complying
to the dictates of market research, have inevitably become franchised (Anton
LeVey being the Burger King stooge of the lower astral plane that they are
required to take orders from since the author of The Satanic Bible is too afraid
to take on another incarnation in order to spiritually evolve). It is a sad fact
indeed that the CIA are running their various MK'd assassins through blow mold
injectors like G.I. Joe dolls, creating uniformly nondescript vectors of mayhem
hardly worthy of our attention, instead of taking the time to artistically craft
such a macabre and idiosyncratic galaxy as found in the Manson klatch of bygone,
paisley days. Instead of Quasi- Christ like Mansons with matted hair, goggle
eyes and smelly feet, we get dweebs with Mark McGwire sport beards, cell phones,
and Levi Cotton Dockers doing the CIA's dirty work. Fortunately, in the much
welcome exposé, The Shadow Over Santa Susana, Adam Gorightly brings the wayward
and colorful Manson gaggle back to vivid, hallucinatory life in an informative
and entertaining way. Published by Illuminaughty Productions, Inc. a subsidiary
of the Konformist Kollective, the book follows the trail of a nightmare
arabesque conjured by Manson and his bus load of drug addled, statutory nymphs,
bringing to light conspiratorial information that has laid dormant for several
years. Apparently old Charley had ties with Scientology (the organization denies
this in spite of contrary evidence), NLP, The Process Church and other suspect
covers for various mind control projects. He even had MK'd patsy Sirhan Sirhan
as a next door cell mate where they whiled away their life sentences together
for a time. One can only wonder about this so called 'synchronicity'! Tying
together the seemingly disparate acts of calculated murder, from Tate/LaBianca
to 'Son of Sam' David Berkowitz, Mark David Chapman and John Hinckley Jr., and
others no doubt initially inspired by the Manson avatar himself, one starts to
see the bigger picture at hand of The Family as being one vast, interlinked mind
control experiment. The author speculates that such a program was initially
implemented by such grey, Fabian elements as Aldous Huxley and others of his
elite, Tavistockian persuasion. Gorightly goes on to burst the rose colored
bubble on the so called Summer of Love circa 1967 which inevitably seguewayed,
only three failed revolutions later, into the infamous Tate/LaBianca murders on
August 9th, 1969. Incidentally, the Rolling Stones's Altamont concert
culminating in the murder of a young black man by a 'Hell's Angel' occurred in
1969 as well, not to mention the Apollo 11 moon walk done by an astronaut who
planted a Freemasonic flag on the orb in a blatant act of occult colonization.
Conspiracy researchers such as the late Mae Brussell speculated that these
events, amongst many others, were part of a 'strategy of tension' to bring
closure to the Woodstock era and put an indelible curse on the peace, love and
understanding crowd. Reading Gorightly's book has reminded me, once again, how
thankful I am for having been too young to be a part of the ill fated hippy trip
(and now too old to be a part of the attention deficited Generation X). One only
needs to look at what many of the so called flower children have now become to
be reminded of the dire repercussions of the Curse of '69, such as Guilty/Not
Guilty Sarah Jane Olsen (currently on trial, accused of putting a bomb under a
police car as a part of her stint with the S.L.A.) and other ungainly
psychedelic mutations now roaming about at large in search of just causes to
sabotage. Speaking of sabotage, the other day, while riding my bike, I saw some
flower child has been smugly waxing his Porsche Turbo Charged Carrera in the
driveway of a more than upscale home, wearing a freshly ironed, tye-dyed T-shirt
and Birkenstock sandals, his terminally grey hair bunched up in a pony tail.
Thanks to the author's concerted efforts, The Shadow Over Santa Susana will
serve to heighten the attentive reader's awareness of the prevalence of such
patholgical ironies, ironies which for the most part go unnoticed by the legions
of smarmy, self-satisfied baby boomers now gearing up for their golden years of
unchallenged complaceny. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Gorightly, we can further
appreciate if not admire Charles Manson, swastika tattoo and all, for having
some semblance of originality, talent and genuine flair in spite of his moral
waywardness, qualities obviously absent yet desperately needed at present time.
