The Global Surveillance State predicted in the December 2000 edition of my book Snitch Culture is rising from the ashes of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
It is being done under the guise of an international War on Terrorism orchestrated by George W. Bush, the son of the former CIA director who ran the illegal Iran-Contra supply network while he was Vice- President.
With the nation still reeling from the apocalyptic attacks, Bush declared war on terrorism in general and Saudi exile Osama bin Laden in particular. Although only Congress has the power to declare war, Capitol Hill simply rolled over and applauded the crusade, just like they did in Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama and the Balkans.
And just as they did in those conflicts, the mass media wrapped itself in the flag, stifled all voices of dissent, and rushed to embrace "America's New War," as CNN dubbed it in red, white and blue letters. With the talking heads calling for the nation to rally behind Bush, U.S. bombers were pounding Afghanistan - bin Laden's assumed home base - by early October. Even as much of the Muslim world rose up to oppose the strikes, the talking heads gushed enthusiastically about the accuracy of satellite directed missiles and "bunker buster" mega-bombs.
Meanwhile, Bush turned responsibility for securing the domestic front over to Tom Ridge, the former Pennsylvania governor who oversaw the violent suppression of civil rights during the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia - including covert surveillance of lawful political groups and the brutal arrest of protest leaders on trumped-up charges. As head of the newly created Office of Homeland Defense, Ridge is in charge of the anti-terrorism activities of over 40 federal law enforcement agencies. An early estimate put the cost of defending the country at $1.5 trillion over the next five years.
If Bush and Ridge have their way, within a few years everyone will be required to carry an official ID card that will include a computer chip to allow the government to track their movements. Facial recognition cameras will scan crowds at airports and other public places, matching faces with vast databases that will include millions of digital drivers' license photos. The FBI will plug its Carnivore computers into the servers used by Internet Service Providers to route e-mail traffic. All information collected by any government agency will be shared with every police agency around the world.
More than that, the government is apparently preparing to round up thousands of people. On October 4 the New York Post reported that the Federal Bureau of Prisons had just issued requests for bids to build two prisons to hold "criminal aliens" in Georgia, with three more prisons in the Southwest deserts that can hold 1,500 detainees to be built early next year. The article speculated that the Wackenhut private security company could win the contracts because it has run immigrant camps in Australian made out of converted military bases.
As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor told a law school audience in Manhattan on September 29, "[W]e're likely to experience more restrictions on our personal freedom than has ever been the case in our country."
Many of these invasive practices will be authorized by the first major expansion of the Snitch Culture in the 21st Century, the so- called USA Act of 2001 rushed through Congress with little debate within weeks of the attacks on New York and Washington DC. Many of the provisions enhance the power of domestic law enforcement agencies to spy on Americans for "intelligence" as opposed to criminal investigations. Among other things, the law:
* Creates the new crime of "Domestic Terrorism" that could be interpreted to impose heavy penalties on political protest.
* As part of a crackdown on "Cyber-terrorism," computer hackers and virus makers will face life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, even if no one is ever harmed by their activities.
* Allows information obtained during criminal investigation to be shared with the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Secret Service and the military without judicial review, and with no restrictions on how these agencies can use the information.
* Authorizes covert "sneak and peak" searches where the government can enter your home, office or other private place and search your files, photograph your belongings, and download your computer hard drive without telling you.
* Allows "forum shopping" where law enforcement agencies can use friendly judges to obtain "single jurisdiction" search warrants to use against suspects in other parts of the country, making it almost impossible to challenge them.
* Allows the CIA to spy on American citizens and requires the FBI to share its files with the spy agency, including those on law-abiding American citizens.
* Allows indefinite detention of non-citizens, including legal aliens, without meaningful judicial review.
* Requires colleges and universities to open student files to law enforcement agencies.
* Expands wiretap authority by allowing police to obtain the equivalent of "blank" warrants for any phone in the country.
* Widens the scope of subpoenas for records of electronic communications to include evidence such as credit card receipts and Internet accounts.
* Authorizes U.S. authorities to shire into about persons suspected of terrorism or money laundering with financial institutions.
* Orders the Attorney General to explore the feasibility of an integrated computer fingerprint identification system that can be used at points of entry and US consulates.
"Most Americans do not recognize that Congress has just passed a bill that would give the government expanded power to invade our privacy, imprison people without due process and punish dissent," said Laura W. Murphy, Director of the ACLU Washington National Office, said on October 12.
The War on Terrorism claimed many victims before the bill even passed, however. As always, the first victim of this new war was the truth. George Bush flatly told the nation that much of the government's activities would be conducted in secret and might never be disclosed. "Watch what you say," White House press spokesman Ari Fleischer warned within days of the attacks. A short time later, National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice personally told the heads of all major television and cable networks to censor their newscasts - and they agreed.
Al Cross, president of the Society of Professional Journalists, said the restrictions are preventing reporters from doing their jobs.
"They're finding it increasingly difficult to fulfill their roles as watchdogs," Cross said on October 13. "It just seems that things have been done willy-nilly."
Other early victims included foreign visitors. Over 700 people - mostly from the Middle East - were jailed in the early stages of the investigation into the attack. Many were simply released after being held in interrogated for weeks. A 20-year old student from Pakistan said he was stripped and beaten in his cell by other inmates while jail guards failed to intervene and denied him medical care. In three midwestern states, U.S. immigration officials cut off all visits and phone calls for detainees for a full week. Authorities refused to tell San Diego attorney Randall Hamud where his three clients - Osama Awadallah, Modhar Abdullah and Yazeem Al-Alsami - were even held.
But this new War on Terrorism is not just another domestic law enforcement initiative. It is the excuse to create an international surveillance society that will ultimately monitor everyone in the world.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair carried the message to receptive leaders throughout Europe. Dozens of other countries promptly signed up, pledging all possible support. The United Nations quickly passed a resolution requiring all member nations to cooperate by opening up their banks to international inspectors - potentially affecting billions of law-abiding citizens across the globe. The September 11 attacks allowed governments in Europe and the Middle East to round up hundreds of political dissidents under the guise of cracking down on terrorist networks.
History teaches us these new powers will be abused. President Abraham Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus during the Civil War. Foreign-born socialists and labor organizers were deported during World War I. Japanese-Americans were interned during World War II. The government spied on, harassed and even murdered political protesters during the Vietnam War era.
As in the past, America¹s New War will benefit the rich and powerful at the expense of the poor. Multinational corporations facing growing protests over their labor and environmental practices will find it easier to do business. Fledgling labor movements in developing countries will be shut down as terrorist organizations. Dissident political organizations will have their bank accounts frozen and their assets seized.
Meanwhile, the establishment press is ignoring many troubling questions. Chief among them, what is the government¹s real relationship with bin Laden, the alleged mastermind behind the September 11 attacks. The CIA admits that bin Laden was an "intelligence asset" during Afghanistan¹s war against the Soviets, but insists he turned against America when the U.S. government turned its back on him after the Cold War. Michel Chossudovsky, professor of economics at University of Ottawa, insists the CIA never severed its ties with him and other Muslim militants, however.
"Since the end of the Cold War, these covert intelligence links have not only been maintained, they have become increasingly sophisticated," Chossudovsky claims. "New undercover initiatives financed by the Golden Crescent drug trade were set in motion in Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Balkans. Pakistan's military and intelligence apparatus (controlled by the CIA) essentially served as a catalyst for the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of six new Muslim republics in Central Asia."
This raises an obvious question about the September 11 attacks: What did the government know when did they know it? Government agents infiltrated such previous attacks as the Greensboro Massacre, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1995 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal office building. Although intelligence officials originally denied having any advance warning of the September 11 attacks, they were soon forced to admit that "lots of signs" pointed to the plot, including warnings of an impending "Hiroshima" on U.S. soil.
Three days after the attacks, Newsweek, the Washington Post and the Knight Ridder newspapers reported that five of the hijackers were trained at secure U.S. military installations during the 1990s. The reports also claimed three of the terrorists had listed their address as the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida, and had participated in military exchange programs for foreign officers at the Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida.
The Pentagon denied the reports and the stories went away. But in fact, the FBI raided the private Florida flight school where several of the suicide pilots trained within hours of the attacks, proving the government knew more far more about the terrorists than it is admitting.
Likewise, the media is ignoring even bigger questions. Five Israeli citizens were arrested and held in isolation after accusations surfaced that nearly 4,000 Jews mysterious skipped work at the World Trade Center. Who are they? George Bush Sr. is in business with bin Laden's family through the Carlyle Group, a private Washington DC equity firm that has essentially become the nation's largest defense contractor. What is real relationship between these two powerful families?
And what is the role of oil in the equation? According to published reports, the U.S. and Pakistan decided to install a stable regime in Afghanistan around 1994 to ensure the safety of a Unocal pipeline project. Is Operation Enduring Freedom just the final step in this effort to tap the region's oil reserves?
Don't look to the CNN or any other mainstream news outlet for the answers. They are too busy playing their roles as cheerleaders for the Snitch Culture, gleefully pumping the $5 million rewards offered for what they dubbed, "The World's Most Wanted Terrorists."

9/11 – What Was Israel's Role?

When is American foreign policy going to start putting America first? The US had nothing to gain, and everything to lose, by vetoing a UN resolution condemning violence on all sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The resolution condemned terrorism, no matter what the source, called for the creation of a "monitoring mechanism" to prevent violence, denounced executions without trial, and said the destruction of property must cease. You gotta problem with that?
Negrooponte's Veto This administration does: John Negroponte, American ambassador to the UN, justified the US veto by averring that the resolution aimed to "isolate politically one of the parties to the conflict through an attempt to throw the weight of the Council behind the other party.'' The resolution, said Negroponte, was unsatisfactory because it didn't specifically mention "recent acts of terrorism'' against Israelis. Naturally, this scuttled the whole thing, as it was intended to do.
The Victimological Olympics For this argument, if carried on long enough, would lead to an infinite regression of victimological examples: the pro-Arab bloc would insist on specifically mentioning the supposedly accidental killing of five Palestinian children by an Israeli booby-trap bomb planted near a school. This would be the cue for the Israeli side to come up with a Hamas-Hizbollah atrocity that merits inclusion – and, before you know it, we're all the way back to 1948 with the pro-Arabists demanding the inclusion of the massacre at Deir Yassein, and, naturally, the Zionist bloc doing them one better by moving for some mention of the Roman conquest and persecution of the Jews.
THE WAR AGAINST THE WORLD The US veto undermines the war effort, and makes the Americans seem as if they are waging a war not only on Islam, but against the entire world on behalf of Israel. After decades of trying to prove its bona fides as an honest broker of peace in the region, it is the US that is effectively isolated. The resolution was co-sponsored (or amended) by France and the Security Council vote was 12-1, with Britain and Norway abstaining. Whatever credibility the US had in the Arab world – very little, I'm afraid – was lost with that one arrogant gesture. So much for the grand "coalition" that Colin Powell has been building: the Israeli lobby in the US has demolished it with a single blow.
THE LAST LAUGH Is that the demonic laughter of the Mad Sheik I hear, chortling in his cave at this act of American self-sabotage? It may be Osama bin Laden is not long for this world. Yet he will die happy in the knowledge that the US is sowing the seeds of his future warrior army, who will spring like Muslim Myrmidons out of Palestine's blood-soaked earth.
BATTLEGROUND AMERICA Speaking of sabotage, the story of the gigantic Israeli spy operation in the US – and its mysterious activities in the weeks prior to 9/11 – continues to amaze and shock even me. When I wrote, a few weeks ago, that the detention of some 60 Israelis in connection with 9/11 was "ominous" little did I realize just how much of an understatement that would turn out to be. It is often said that, post-9/11, the US is going through what the Israelis have had to endure for decades. The series of Fox News special reports on Israeli penetration of US intelligence assets puts this insight in an entirely new light. For it appears, from what we are learning, that the struggle between two desert tribes in a far away land has truly been brought home to the US: America, we are discovering to our horror, has become a battleground for both sides in that ancient conflict.
ENDS & MEANS As I related last week, the first part of this astonishing four-part series by Fox News reporter Carl Cameron presents credible evidence suggesting Israeli intelligence had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks. The second and third parts show they had the means to acquire this knowledge. According to Cameron,
"Fox News has learned that some American terrorist investigators fear certain suspects in the Sept. 11 attacks may have managed to stay ahead of them, by knowing who and when investigators are calling on the telephone."
ALL ROADS LEAD TO AMDOCS Cameron takes us through an explanation of how and why virtually all telephone calls in the US are billed by a single company, Amdocs Ltd., which just happens to be headquartered in Israel. Chances are that when you make a call, the record of the call and the billing is done through Amdocs. With a virtual monopoly in the US, and tentacles worldwide, Cameron reports that "it is virtually impossible to make a call on normal phones without generating an Amdocs record of it." Amdocs denies any wrongdoing, but sources tell Fox News that, in 1999,
"The super secret national security agency, headquartered in northern Maryland, issued what's called a Top Secret sensitive compartmentalized information report, TS/SCI, warning that records of calls in the United States were getting into foreign hands – in Israel, in particular."
SPIES IN THE WOODWORK It's not that anyone is listening in on all these calls, but that these methods are a way to know who is calling whom, when, and for how long – vital information in and of itself. Cameron assures us that the White House and the Pentagon are immune from such surveillance, but an article in Insight, the magazine put out by the Washington Times, showed how Israeli intelligence had thoroughly penetrated the communications system at the Clinton White House. According to co-authors J. Michael Waller and Paul M. Rodriguez, writing in May of last year, the FBI was
"Probing an explosive foreign-espionage operation that could dwarf the other spy scandals plaguing the U.S. government. Insight has learned that FBI counterintelligence is tracking a daring operation to spy on high-level US officials by hacking into supposedly secure telephone networks. The espionage was facilitated, federal officials say, by lax telephone-security procedures at the White House, State Department and other high-level government offices and by a Justice Department unwillingness to seek an indictment against a suspect."
"The espionage operation may have serious ramifications," wrote Waller and Rodriguez, "because the FBI has identified Israel as the culprit."
MONICA TELLS ALL Dozens of officials confirmed the story, telling the authors of this fascinating piece how the Israelis had managed to penetrate not only State Department telephone lines, but also those in the White House, the Defense Department, and the Justice Department. That the President knew this at the time is beyond doubt; it came out, you'll remember, during l'affaire Lewinsky, when Monica testified that, on March 29, 1997, she and Clinton were desecrating the Oval Office and she specifically remembered it because, as the Starr Report put it:
"He suspected that a foreign embassy was tapping his telephones, and he proposed cover stories. If ever questioned, she should say that the two of them were just friends. If anyone ever asked about their phone sex, she should say that they knew their calls were being monitored all along, and the phone sex was just a put on."
LITTLE DID THEY KNOW That "foreign embassy" was the Israelis'. It is spooky, in retrospect, to read the comments of the American intelligence and law enforcement officials who sourced this pioneering Insight piece (which, for some reason, is no longer available on their website but is still available, thanks to the miracle of Google). "It's a huge security nightmare," said one senior US official. "The implications are severe," another unnamed official chimed in. "We're not even sure we know the extent of it," said a third high-ranking intelligence official. "All I can tell you is that we think we know how it was done. That alone is serious enough, but it's the unknown that has such deep consequences."
OUT OF THE MURK Ah, but the deepness of these consequences is just beginning to be known. As the Fox News revelations make all too clear, they are a lot deeper than anyone, including Waller and Rodriguez, could possibly have imagined last year. The picture that is beginning to emerge out of the murk is this: the Israelis were watching the hijackers and/or their associates, and they very possibly had access to a complete set of the conspirators' phone records, if not direct access to the content of their conversations. In the months prior to the attacks, the Israelis did indeed issue a warning of "massive" terrorist attacks, but, in an effort to protect both their sources and methods, their warning gave no details and was therefore practically useless.
THE COMVERSE CONNECTION The third part of the Fox series shows how the Israelis had access, not only to phone records, but also to the wiretaps being conducted by US law enforcement agencies. This access could have easily been provided, Cameron points out, by yet another hi-tech Israeli communications company, Comverse, which operates as practically a branch of the Israeli government, and enjoys near monopolistic status here in the US.
When you place a call, it goes through a complicated network of routers and switchers. The way wiretapping works is that customized computers are linked to that network via specialized software, and the system intercepts, records, and stores wiretapped calls. But this system has a "back door" that could have easily been opened by Israeli intelligence. Comverse maintains a link to the wiretapping computers, on the grounds that it is necessary for system "maintenance." Over the opposition of some patriotic law enforcement officers, this process was authorized by the 1994 Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). But that wasn't the end of it. According to Fox News,
"Attorney General John Ashcroft and FBI Director Robert Mueller were both warned Oct. 18 in a hand-delivered letter from 15 local, state and federal law enforcement officials, who complained that 'law enforcement's current electronic surveillance capabilities are less effective today than they were at the time CALEA was enacted.'"
ASHCROFT'S COMPLICITY But Ashcroft is too busy rounding up Arabs and closing down their organizations to worry about the wholesale penetration of our communications system – including "secure" networks at the White House, the Defense Department, and elsewhere – by our wonderful allies, the Israelis. Cameron cites several unnamed law enforcement agents – concerned about the ominous implications of the Israeli penetration in light of 9/11 – who say that even raising the issue is "career suicide."
I HOPE YOU'RE SITTING DOWN Okay, so the Israelis have the phone lines over at the White House, the Defense Department, the Justice Department, and, for all we know, your local dogcatcher's office bugged to the max. So they have the capability to know where and when practically every phone call in the US, and large sections of the rest of the world, is made, and to whom. As fantastic as it sounds, given the advance of technology and the reputation of the Mossad, I'm willing to believe it. What's really alarming, however, is that, as Cameron reports:
"On a number of cases, suspects that they had sought to wiretap and survey immediately changed their telecommunications processes. They started acting much differently as soon as those supposedly secret wiretaps went into place."
BEYOND THE BEGUINE The implications of this stunning news go far beyond my original contention: that the Israelis had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks and simply failed to let us know the details. For it all depends on the intended target of the wiretaps: was it the Israelis, or Bin Laden's agents? If the former were acting differently after wiretaps were put in place, it means only that the Israelis were using their sources and methods to protect their own: if the latter, it means the Israelis were using their sources and methods to protect the Bin Ladenites. That is a possibility no one – including me – wants to contemplate, and, in all truthfulness, I must confess I cannot believe it. I am forced to concede, however, that, given what we now know, it is possible. Until and unless the government comes clean, we won't know for sure.
INVESTIGATE THE ISRAELI CONNECTION At the end of his second report, Carl Cameron remarked to Brit Hume that the question of the Israeli connection to 9/11 "came up in the select intelligence committee on Capitol Hill today," and "they intend to look into what we reported last night." Naturally, all this is occurring in secret, with the likelihood of a cover-up all but certain. What is needed is a public investigation, and full disclosure of the Israeli role, if any, in 9/11.
WHERE IS THE MEDIA? That, of course, is the role of the media – and, in this regard, it is interesting to note that Cameron's explosive investigation has not been picked up by a single news outlet, as far as I know (although I would be happy to be proved wrong) or discussed by a single "mainstream" columnist. Yet Fox News is hardly a marginal new source. In a business where scandal and especially spy stories are hot, you would think that a story like this, with its tie-in to 9/11, would have the other networks and the major media falling all over themselves to get a piece of the action. But not this time, at least so far.
FAN MAIL FROM SOME CRANKY FLOUNDER It's funny, but when I wrote my first column on this subject, I got a whole bunch of nutball letters from anti-Semitic cranks who told me that "the Jews" would never let me get away with it, and that I am now a "marked man." This story, wrote one correspondent, "will go nowhere," because "the Jews" control the media, blah blah blah. I laughed, reading these perfervid notes, most of them WRITTEN IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, wondering at the infinite capacity of people to fit reality into ideological categories rather than the other way 'round. After all, the mere fact that the story was broadcast on Fox News, a major media organization, appears to contradict the self-evidently absurd thesis that the "Elders of Zion," sitting in a control room somewhere, determine what news we're allowed to read.
THE ANTI-SEMITIC FALLACY I can only hope, for Mr. Cameron's sake, that what amounts to "career suicide" in law enforcement doesn't hold true at Fox News. Israel certainly has many vocal and very active supporters, who are quick to make their opinions known. But it is false to posit a "Jewish-controlled" media, no matter what the ethnicity or political persuasion of editors, owners, or whatever: these media companies are beholden to their shareholders, and to the market. Reporting the news is an intensely competitive business: there is no way to enforce an embargo on certain information, not in this day and age. There is no "Jewish conspiracy" – only the machinations of a particular foreign government and its uncritical supporters in this country, who span the ethnic and religious as well as the political spectrum.
THE TRUTH, AT LAST It is too soon to say whether or not this story has "legs," as they say, and is going anywhere soon. But one thing's for sure: Fox News has blown the mystery of 9/11 wide open. This isn't going to just go away. On September 11, the American people looked on in disbelief at the sight of not only the World Trade Center going down but the Pentagon – the Pentagon, fer chrissake! – under attack and apparently defenseless. My first thought, at any rate, was: How could this happen? With these latest surprising developments – pointing to an ambiguous Israeli role, at best, in all this – I fear we are just beginning to discover the answer to that question.

I am seeing a lot of effort
by some cyber-entities to
re-contextualize the comments of those that argue that
the United States, Israel, and some other
international elements had a role in 9-11 into
distortions of anti-semitism and conspiranoia.
Firstly, it is about as
anti-semitic to say that
Israel had a role in the tragedy of September 11 as it
is anti-American to say Nixon was a crook.
Secondly, if you do not make
major economic decisions
behind closed doors in such a way that your 'foe' is
left out of the informational equation, you are said
to not be looking out for the security of your nation
or country. This is called conspiracy. Let's quite
confusing it with the word 'fantasy.' You have but to
look them up to see the difference.
Sections 2 and 3 of Allied
terrorism are growing fast.
Do not consider their brevity an indication of a lack
of merit. They have merely gotten less attention from
me until recently.

Were criminals responsible for the sharp rise in credit card transactions that moved through some computer systems at the WTC shortly before the planes hit the twin towers?
Or was it coincidence that unusually large sums of money, perhaps more than $100 million, were rushed through the computers as the disaster unfolded?
A world leader in retrieving data, German-based firm Convar is trying to answer those questions and help credit card companies, telecommunications firms and accountants in New York recover their records from computer hard drives that have been partially damaged by fire, water or fine dust.
Using a pioneering laser scanning technology to find data on damaged computer hard drives and main frames found in the rubble of the World Trade Center and other nearby collapsed buildings, Convar has recovered information from 32 computers that support assumptions of dirty doomsday dealings.
"The suspicion is that inside information about the attack was used to send financial transaction commands and authorizations in the belief that amid all the chaos the criminals would have, at the very least, a good head start," said Convar director Peter Henschel.
"Of course it is also possible that there were perfectly legitimate reasons for the unusual rise in business volume," he told Reuters in an interview.
"It could turn out that Americans went on an absolute shopping binge on that Tuesday morning. But at this point there are many transactions that cannot be accounted for," Henschel said.
"Not only the volume but the size of the transactions was far higher than usual for a day like that. There is a suspicion that these were possibly planned to take advantage of the chaos."
Nearly 3,300 people were killed in the attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center.
Some 30,000 people in the buildings, symbols of America's financial might, were able to escape between the time the planes crashed and about an hour later when they collapsed — even though many of the unmanned computers continued working.
The United States blames the al Qaeda group led by Saudi-born Osama bin Laden for the attack and has since waged war on the Taliban regime in Afghanistan that sheltered them.
There are several data retrieval companies in the United States and Europe, but Convar said it has won the lion's share of the contracts from the World Trade Center because of its laser scanning technology.
Convar developed the laser scanner two years ago that made it possible to retrieve data from badly damaged computers.
With a staff of 30 in its high-security facility in Pirmasens near the French border, the firm has worked with the U.S. armed forces in Germany as well as German federal police for the last 15 years.
Its offices in Pirmasens, a town of 36,000 still suffering from the departure of some 4,000 American soldiers stationed here during the Cold War, are closely guarded behind high fences and monitored by dozens of security cameras.
Inside the building, an endless series of code-operated door locks keeps unwelcome visitors away. In the center of the facility is a 120-square-meter, dust-free "clean room" where the damaged computer drives are coaxed back to life.
Citing client privacy, Henschel declined to say which companies Convar is working for, or provide details about the data retrieved so far. But he said the raw material, up to 40 gigabytes per computer hard drive, is sent immediately by satellite or courier back to New York.
Richard Wagner, a data retrieval expert at the company, said illegal transfers of more than $100 million might have been made immediately before and during the disaster.
"There is a suspicion that some people had advance knowledge of the approximate time of the plane crashes in order to move out amounts exceeding $100 million," Wagner said. "They thought that the records of their transactions could not be traced after the main frames were destroyed."
The companies are paying between $20,000 and $30,000 for each computer recovered, Henschel said.
The high recovery costs are one reason why only a limited number of hard drives are being examined. Convar has turned down a request by one British newspaper to try to recover personal last hour e-mails sent by someone trapped in the doomed building.
Henschel said the companies in the United States were working together with the FBI to piece together what happened on Sept 11 and that he was confident the destination of the dubious transactions would one day be tracked down.
"We have been quite surprised that so many of the hard drives were in good enough shape to retrieve the data," he said.
"The contamination rate is high. The fine dust that was everywhere in the area got pressed under high pressure into the drives. But we've still been able to retrieve 100% of the data on most of the drives we've received.
"We're helping them find out what happened to the computers on September 11 as quickly as possible. I'm sure that one day they will know what happened to the money." (Reuters News)

THE OKLAHOMA CITY BOMBING JIHAD
"The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror" by David Hoffman, published in 1998 and put out of print as the means of settling a two million dollar libel suit against Feral House from Oliver "Buck" Revell, who had just retired from the FBI as its Deputy Chief. Feral House did not carry legal insurance at time of the suit; First Amendment organizations, and PEN and ACLU "regretted" not being able to assist Feral House. Lawyers competent in publishing law required retainer fee down payment far higher than Feral House had in its bank account.
A year after Feral House was forced to settle, "Buck" Revell moved on to sue author David Hoffman and former Pentagon CID investigator Gene Wheaton, who was quoted in the OKC bombing book about Revell's connections to Oliver North and death squads. Hoffman's defense received funding by a wealthy midwest conspiracy nut, and Revell's suit was thrown out of court as baseless.
When reading the "Teflon Terrorist" chapter of Hoffman's book today, I discovered a possible reason why the ACLU refused to assist Feral House in a bogus lawsuit. One footnote recalled that the ACLU worked tirelessly on behalf of Abraham Ahmed, who the legal organization claimed was a victim of racist profiling. On the same day as bombing, Ahmed attempted to fly from Oklahoma City to Amman, Jordan, but was stopped at Heathrow Airport after American Airlines flight security notified the FBI of the Middle Easterner's suspicious behavior. Ahmed was cuffed and returned to the U.S. after his luggage was found to contain such things as two car radios (the sort used to bomb Pan Am 103), silicon, solder, shielded and unshielded wire, a timing device, a photo album with pictures of weapons and missile, and a blue jogging suit similar to that seen worn by an Arab suspect in front of the Murrah building on the morning of the blast. Perhaps prompted by ACLU's media tirade, the FBI promptly released suspect Abraham Ahmed, and President Clinton apologized to the Arab-American community.
Feral House's OKC bombing tome, praised by Gore Vidal in the September '01 issue of Vanity Fair as the best book covering the terror attack, appears to have important relevance to the September 11 tragedy.
"Teflon Terrorists" documents how McVeigh and Terry Nichols had continual contacts with known terrorist entities up to the day of the Murrah Building blast. Nichols was married to a Filipina woman, and took trips to Cebu City, Philippines (WITHOUT his wife) in late '92 and early '93 to meet with such friendly folk from the Abu Sayyaf terrorist org as Ramzi Yousef, Abdul Hakim Murad, Wali Khan Amin Shah and several others to discuss the bombing of the OKC building.
Murad was arrested in 1995 for the initial World Trade Center bombing, and after viewing the Oklahoma City Bombing on a New York jail television set, he remarked to a guard that the "Liberation Army of the Philippines" -- a group connected to Abu Sayyef, was responsible for the blast. Later, Abu Sayyaf leader Edwin Angeles corrected Murad for the record: "It was the Palestine Liberation Army and the Islamic Jihad which Murad was referring to. This army is associated with Hamas and is based in Lebanon."
After the Oklahoma City Bombing, Saudi intelligence told the FBI that Iraq had hired Pakistanis to do the Murrah Building job. Edwin Angeles is a Pakistani.
David Hoffman's now-banned book also interviews Cary Gagan, who for years trucked cocaine for PLO-affiliated Arabs while informing for the DEA. Gagan, whose written immunity is reproduced in David Hoffman's book, was freaked one day after finding that he was not trucking coke but 30 duffel bags of Ammonium Nitrate explosives from Sandex Explosives of Las Vegas, C4 plastic explosives, and a Lely farm mixer, the same mixer seen with McVeigh at the Dreamland Hotel in Junction City by witness David King. Gagan's urgent and frequent calls to the DEA, and later, the FBI, were ignored.
The Neo-Nazi Middle East Connection
Members of Elohim City, the Oklahoma-based neo-Nazi/Christian Identity operation visited and called by Tim McVeigh -- even the day before the bombing -- spoke a lot about blowing up federal buildings and killing Jews and blacks. Carol Howe, who informed on Elohim City for the ATF, told of discussions of where to buy Syntex plastic explosive and favored areas to explode it. Howe's informant reports actually became discovery evidence and appendices to the Feral House book after the ATF arrested her for compiling lists of bomb ingredients and using her phone to distribute racist information -- all undercover activities performed on behalf of her employer -- the ATF.
Carol Howe's one time boyfriend, Elohim City resident Dennis Mahon, even boasted to journalists that he was paid by Iraq for anti-Gulf War and anti-semitic mischief. But Iraq severed their ties with Mahon soon after the bombing. "The cut me off -- a month after the bombing! Bastards!"
Hatred of Jews and American government is a purpose shared by Christian Identity and Muslim fundamentalists. On April 19, 1995 the exact date the Murrah building was bombed, "Covenant, Sword and Arm of the Lord" (CSA) member Richard Wayne Snell "chuckled and laughed" as he watched television coverage of the Oklahoma City disaster, hours before his execution for murdering a black state trooper and a pawnbroker he believed was Jewish. In 1983, Snell and other CSA members were arrested for attempting to truck bomb the Murrah building.

Spells and Counterspells: Why Act Now?

The days are short and cold, the streets are uninviting. The political climate seems as chilly as the winter winds, and everybody is saying that 911 changed everything. Why take action now?
The government, the media, even some of our own allies warn us that public opinion is no longer with us, that repression will be high, that any action we take will be too costly both personally and politically, that we should hold back and wait.
But The WTO, the IMF, the World Bank, and the other institutions of corporate capitalism are not waiting. They continue to meet, to argue for a new round of trade negotiations, to impose policies that result in a widening gap between rich and poor, and a staggering global death toll. And as winter nears, the potential rises for massive starvation in Afghanistan if relief trucks cannot deliver supplies because of our bombs.
And so on bad days we hear our own inner voices murmuring, 'It's hopeless. We've lost. The forces we face are too strong for us. Give up." These voices seem reasonable, sensible. But any Witch can recognize a spell being cast. A spell is a story we tell ourselves that shapes our emotional and psychic world. The media, the authorities tell a story so pervasive that most people mistake it for reality. We're fighting a righteous war against the Source of All Evil, and everyone supports Bush, and corporate control is the only way to be safe and to provide what we need, and to question is Evil, too. The counterspell is simple: tell a different story. Pull back the curtain: expose their story for the false tale it is. Act 'as if'.
Act as if we weren't doomed, as if what we did in the next weeks and months could shift the balance of fate. Act as if the movement were coming back stronger than ever, attracting thousands and hundreds of thousands who have had their eyes opened by the war.
Act as if this movement were the most creative, visionary, inspiring, funny, welcoming, transforming and truly revolutionary movement that had ever been. As if we had a new language, new tactics, new ways of communicating that could awaken the dormant dissent and the sleeping visions in every heart.
Act as if a whole new public dialogue was beginning outside the boxes drawn by our traditional political lines and our TV sets. Act as if all the different factions in our movement were learning how to support each other, how to work in true coalition and act with true solidarity. As if all who should be allies were able to come together and work for our common goals.
Act as of we were going to win.
Actions that are creative, vibrant, confident and visionary, actions that directly and clearly confront the institutions we oppose and pose alternatives can be empowering both to those who take part and to those who hear of them. We need to advance, not retreat, to take the political space we want and claim it. If we silence ourselves, we're tacitly agreeing that our protests are indeed some distant kin to the terrorists' acts.
If we insist that our voices be heard, that open dissent is not terrorism, but the deepest commitment to democracy, once the inevitable vitriol wears off, we'll find that we've gained legitimacy and shifted the ground of the dialogue. The longer we wait to claim that space, the more rigidified the patterns of oppression will grow. We need to act now, while the future is still fluid, and set the pattern ourselves.
Since 911, I've been to more rallies and marches than I can count. I've marched with Gandhian pacifists and white-haired women in wheelchairs. I've marched with dancing, drumming Pagans. I've marched with Socialists and militants screaming about imperialism. I've marched with black masked anarchists surrounded by riot cops. And you know what? It's been okay. The police have behaved like police behave, sometimes restrained, sometimes provocative, occasionally vicious-but that's not new. At times we met counter demonstrators, but never been more than a handful. And we often received unexpected support. I've seen construction workers flash peace signs at the Black Bloc.
Of course, our fears aren't just based on fictions. The authorities command real force, real tear gas, real clubs, real guns, real jails. Real people do die, go to prison, suffer. So might we. But fear makes things worse than they are. Fear limits our vision and our ability to take in information, makes the power holders seem omnipotent, and leads to our suppressing ourselves, saving the authorities the cost and trouble of doing it. And despair leads to paralysis.
The counterspell for fear is courage: facing the possibility of the worst and then going ahead with what you know is right. The counterspell for despair is action in service of a vision. The counterspell for paralysis is stubborn, persistent passion.
Even if we're wrong, if nothing we do makes a difference, courage and passion are a better place to be than hopelessness, cynicism and fear. If the authorities repress us, that's better than becoming people who repress ourselves. If we see our dreams ripped out of our hands, that's better than never daring to dream at all.
And if we tell our own stories with enough intensity and focus, we'll start to believe them, and so will others. We'll break the spells that bind us. We'll start to want that other world we say is possible with such intensity that nothing can stop us or deny us. All it takes is our willingness to act from vision, not from fear, to risk hoping, to dare to act for what we love.

[A PROGRESSIVE RUSSIAN VIEW of AFGHANISTAN & OTHER DISASTERS]

President Putin's recent visit to the USA finalised a major turn in Russian foreign policy towards full subordination to the West. The symptoms of this major turn were evident right from the start of Mr. Putin's term in office. One may recall the ratification of the START- 2 treaty that might deprive Russia of its heavy missiles - the cornerstone of our security. But the presidential decisions to support US operation in Afghanistan, and to close Russian bases in Vietnam and Cuba made the sharp turn in the Kremlin's foreign policy evident.
It becomes clear that the intention to join NATO expressed by Mr. Putin in an offhand manner last year reflected a long-matured idea of a far deeper (than in Mr. Gorbachev's or Mr. Yeltsin's case) "integration into the world community". It fact the intention is to squeeze Russia into the Western economic, political and military system. Even as a junior partner. Even at the price of sacrificing independent foreign policy.
For the time being Mr. Putin was just testing the ground. Evidently he was waiting for a pretext to make a strategic turn publicly. The terrorist attacks in the USA provided such a pretext. The commitment to joint struggle against "international terrorism" signaled the move to "the other side". Of course the Kremlin will deny even the idea that they have dropped an independent foreign policy. But their actions speak to the contrary.
A recent statement by a group of public and political figures referred to "Putin's Ten blows" against Russia, i.e. destructive 'reforms' of land, labour, education, health, housing, the military, energy, transportation and other systems.
Now one can talk of 'Putin's ten blows' against Russia's international interests.
FIRST BLOW
The main threat to Russia's security originates not from 'international terrorism' but from NATO expansion to the East. (1)
The November, 2002 NATO summit in Prague will obviously admit a number of East European countries including Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to the Alliance. If this happens we shall get NATO air bases close to Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other centers of Russia. This is very dangerous. The sad experience of Yugoslavia confirms that quite convincingly. (2)
But the Kremlin does not even show signs of real opposition to NATO expansion. More than that, Mr. Putin's statements during his recent visit to Helsinki were perceived as a go-ahead for NATO membership not only for the Baltic States but also for traditionally neutral Finland and Sweden.
SECOND BLOW
The threat to Russia's security is increasingly felt from the South. And not from the Muslim world but from NATO which is penetrating the zones of Russia's vital interests in the Balkans (3), in Transcaucasia and in Central Asia. But instead of reinforcing our Southern frontiers the Kremlin is withdrawing Russian troops from Abkhazia, Adjaria and Transnistria despite protests of the population, which is anxious to retain an alliance with Russia. There is an impression that the recent fighting in Abkhazia was a long- awaited pretext for the Kremlin to speed up its departure from that strategically important region.
THIRD BLOW
Yugoslavia was Russia's only ally in Europe. Mr. Yeltsin contributed to its defeat by refusing to supply anti-aircraft weapons. Mr. Putin refused Yugoslavia political and economic support by cutting gas supplies right before the 2000 presidential elections. (4) Slobodan Milosevic, committed to friendship with Russia, landed in prison. Power in Belgrade was taken over by persons fully dependent on the West, primarily Germany. The present Germany achieved what Hitler failed to achieve, i.e. the conquest of Yugoslavia. And then the Kremlin declares 'a new stage of relations with Yugoslavia.' Absurd? No. It reflects a strategy aimed at Russia's withdrawal from the Balkans.
FOURTH BLOW
In the Middle East the Kremlin's inconsistent policy in the Arab- Israel conflict pushes further away traditionally friendly Arab countries allowing Israel to play 'the Russian card' against both Arabs and the West, which is no longer prepared to unconditionally support Israel.
FIFTH BLOW
Opening Russian air space for the U.S. Air force and supplying intelligence information, as well as the silent agreement to allow recruitment of mercenaries in Russia, means the Kremlin is directly involved in the U.S. war in Afghanistan. The Americans have gotten the Kremlin's backing for a permanent U.S. presence in Central Asia - that is, in the zone of Russia's vital interests. Russia is being encircled by U.S. military bases.
The premature and unconditional support by the Russian president of US retaliatory action is a major foreign policy error as he failed to assess even the short-term consequences. It is evident that the Muslim world is angrily protesting the US repressions against their brothers and that U.S. Western allies are trying to avoid participation in the 'operation' by all means. Meanwhile, the main deliveries of drugs into Russia comes not from the Taliban but from the 'friendly' Northern Alliance.
SIXTH AND SEVENTH BLOWS
Another major blunder is Mr. Putin's intention to close the Russian Naval base in Vietnam and the Electronic Surveillance Center in Cuba. It is impossible to think of a bigger gift to the USA. Russian public opinion is shocked. The damage to Russia's interests is so great that even the pro-presidential newspapers find it quite difficult to explain these decisions.
EIGHTH BLOW
Let's add Mr. Putin's nearly religious desire to get Russia into the World Trade Organization (WTO) which will completely open Russian borders for the expansion of powerful Western capital and will totally eliminate Russian industry and agriculture already only half alive as a result of 'reforms' started by Yeltsin and continued by Putin. (5)
NINTH BLOW
There is no doubt that sooner or later the Kremlin will stop resisting 'modification' of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, i.e. will simply agree to creation of this Star Wars system. Naive attempts to get a simultaneous reduction of U.S. nuclear warheads will lead nowhere. U.S. leaders are well aware of the pitiful state of the Russian nuclear force. Soon even without any treaty Russia will not be able to have more than 1.5 thousand warheads. Why should the US reduce its nuclear arsenal if the Russian arsenal will collapse by itself?
TENTH BLOW
Russian-Chinese relations will inevitably be spoiled as Russia previously promised China to take a firm position on NATO and ABMT. China is obviously watching with deep concern Russia's surrendering of these positions as well as the appearance of the U.S. Air Force close to its borders in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyz. One does not easily forget such things.
Everything that Mr. Putin has earned by spectacular improvement of relations with China, India, Vietnam, Cuba and some other countries collapsed nearly overnight. What has surfaced was Gorbachev's primitive concept of 'common human values' - i.e. subordination of Russia's interests to those of the West.
Recently Mr. Putin visited Germany and Belgium. We have not seen for a long time such an overt desire to please the West. It was a vintage Gorbachev - like 1989 when he surrendered everything to the applause of Mrs. Thatcher. The humiliating desire of the current host of the Kremlin to get the acceptance of the West has become completely shameful. (6)
We have not yet returned to the 19th century Sacred Alliance in the framework of which the Emperor Alexander I put the interests of European monarchies above those of Russia. But when the head of the Russian State plunges into the creation of the alliance against "international terrorism," one recalls that the Sacred Alliance led to the 1854 Crimean War of Britain, France and Turkey against Russia.
The West readily accepts this no-lose game. The artificial flattery of the Russian leader, who staunchly marches into the mousetrap, allows the West to solve strategic tasks without spending an extra penny, without endangering the lives of their soldiers.
Furthermore the flow of money from Russia to Western banks continues non-stop, softening the effects of the economic crisis in the West.
And what does Russia get in return? Nothing. The Kremlin seems to enjoy demonstrating a selflessness that confuses even cynical pro- presidential journalists.
But it doesn't smell of selflessness. It smells of a secret agenda that obviously corresponds to Mr. Putin's long-term personal interests. Of course he has started thinking about the 2004 presidential elections. A favourable attitude by the West will be beneficial…
So what is behind the radical changes in Russian foreign policy? Nothing special. Mr. Putin has simply thrown away the veil of statements about the protection of Russian national interests. His policy acquires a clearly expressed class character. Pragmatism, the defense of some 'national interests' that Mr. Putin likes to talk about at press conferences - this is just for fools. In fact we are observing a clear shift to a policy defined by the interests of the Russian oligarchs very closely connected with Western transnationals and completely dependent on their Western counterparts.
If one can privatize whole branches of industry why can't one privatize foreign policy? The Land Code allowing the sale of lands to foreigners and the opening of Russian air space to the U.S. air force are links in a chain. Having handed over the national economy to Mr. Chubais, Hodorkovsky, Fridman and Co., one should forget about an independent foreign policy. But the Kremlin hardly thinks about that. The outer expressions of independence (receiving a red-carpet reception, and so on) are sufficient.
Russian public opinion is clearly reluctant to recognize the West as a friend. But the Kremlin behaves like a girl in a fairy tale who, with wonderful persistence, fails to see the sharp ears and even sharper teeth of the wolf that has just eaten her grandmother. Mr. Putin's main principle of running the State is, "If one mustn't do something but wants it very much then he\she can do it". Russia will not travel far on this principle. The president should better recall the plight of his predecessor, Mr. Gorbachev, who at the top of his popularity did what he wanted without any regard for the country's interests. The real hatred that the nation now feels for Mr. Gorbachev should at least make Mr. Putin think a bit.
They say that in his youth Mr. Putin was a judo expert. He does not look like one. He is far more skillful in playing into the hands of the other side.

Ah, it seems like it was only yesterday that the biggest outrage in the world was Gary Condit and his lies surrounding the disappearance of Chandra Levy.
Since the day of infamy on September 11, 2001, conspiracy theories have been rampant about what happened in the terror attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon by hijacked planes. (Gee, imagine that?) There's been many questions asked, but the biggest of all, of course, is "Who done it?" While the chorus of the korporate media has focused almost completely on lone nut evil madman Osama bin Laden - or, perhaps, that other evil crazy Muslim monster Saddam Hussein - in their own officially sanctioned conspiracy theory, there have been numerous alternative theories presented in the underground press: Israel and Mossad, China and the PLA, Russia and the KGB, MI6 and the Royal Crown, and, of course, the always nominated Illuminati.
Still, one theory seemed to stick out as a popular choice, and indeed its popularity is an obvious one: the idea that this was an inside job. Specifically, the theory (or theories, as there is more than one strain) posit that the 911 attacks involved US intelligence agents and military people who wanted to let the attacks happen for cynical and amoral (or immoral) reasons. Some believe that they were even the masterminds of the operation, and not merely passive supporters. Whether it be a Pearl Harbor (which was known about beforehand by many US military leaders) or Reichstag (which appears to have been staged by the Nazis themselves), this secret network, so the theory goes, is linked to the BushMob, and some allege includes Dubya himself.
For once, the official viewpoint of The Konformist editorial board is in rejection of the most anti-Shrub konspiracy, as much as we detest the sorry excuse for a man. Of course, that's partly why we reject the more extreme version: the look on Shrub's face after he was alerted of the attacks was the face of true cowardly fear and self- concern. As good of a liar Bush is, he couldn't have faked being so scared for his own life and political future as he showed in those first hours. In fact, his behavior was so lacking in any virtue, the White House had to lie and claim that the White House and Air Force One were targeted in order to cover for his courage deficiency. (Little surprise there: like father, like son, and George I was a wimp, after all.)
One thing is pretty clear: whether or not Team Bush was behind in any way the 911 tragedy, as luck would have it, they are the main beneficiaries. Actually, luck has little to do with it, as such a reaction to such a terrible event could've been easily predicted. So much so, it almost makes you wonder. And that is why what we dub the Shrub Military-Industrial Police State is The Konformist Beast of the Month. Whatever enemy lurks from without, from within the gates is something that is perhaps even more frightening. And with a "defense" budget of $345 billion (plus another $40 billion for emergency funds) it is the richest and most heavily armed network of terror - which, let's face it, is precisely what all that weaponry is for - the world has ever known. All without even having to win an election. With such a nebulous group of Beasts in our midst, it is important to identify who they are and what they stand for.
Let's start with "PRESIDENT" GEORGE W. BUSH, the top winner in the 911 sweepstakes. Rather than pointing out what a terrible job he is doing in an office he never won, pundits, in a predictably cowardly display of false patriotism, have tried to compare his embarrassing speeches to the words of Winston Churchill.
Of course, it isn't just in mere political survival that Shrub has won out. The bloated defense contractors (with increased expenditures) and oil companies (who stand to gain big time from a Caspian Sea pipeline) are the big winners of the sweepstakes as well, groups which he and his puppet master, RICHARD "DONKEY DICK" CHENEY, so happily serve. (So of course, are the airlines, who, in a reverse of the supposed "free market" economics supposedly supported by Team Bush, are receiving a $15 billion boondoggle - along with $10 billion in guaranteed loans - while they 100,000 layoff workers, none of whom are benefit from the massive government welfare bailout.) Meanwhile, the heat is off their self-destructive economic policy, which had left the US economy doomed to a major recession and effectively sabotaged in less than eight months the entire budget surplus that, had it been managed wisely, could have slowly but surely eliminated the entire public debt. Instead, the cynical tax breaks for those who need it least promoted by Shrub and Treasury Department Secretary PAUL O'NEILL is no longer a point of criticism.
Oh yeah, did we already mention defense spending? Star Wars missile defense (despite being unable to stop the WTC-Pentagon attacks) is practically a done deal, with all the destabilizing ramifications of heating up bad blood with Russia and China. Along the way, what practically amounts to a blank check has been sent to Secretary of Defense DONALD RUMSFIELD and his armchair chickenhawk Deputy Secretary PAUL WOLFOWITZ.
Then there's Secretary of State COLIN POWELL and National Security Adviser CONDOLEEZA RICE, who continue their Uncle and Auntie Tom ways of pursuing a foreign policy that combines the worst of nationalism (rampant militarism and lack of concern of other nation's opinions while simultaneously pushing for Star Wars and walking away from Kyoto) and globalism (encouraging international agreements that place corporate profits above the rights of people and sovereign nations.) Meanwhile, they lead the finger-wagging against "supporters of terrorism," an ironic charge considering the current Bush Administration, much less modern US history. In particular are three men of note, all who have as dirty ties as any to Ronald Reagan's creepy and illegal terrorist-backing foreign policy: JOHN D. NEGROPONTE who spent the eighties as Honduras Ambassador denying terrorism in Latin American under US-backed death squads (perversely, he was confirmed unaminously as US Ambassador to the United Nations, only three days after the 911 terrorist attack); OTTO REICH, State Department's one-time head of the Office of Public Diplomacy, which ran an illegal, covert domestic propaganda effort against Nicaragua's Sandinista government, nominated by Shrub for the post of Assistant Secretary of State for Latin America; and perhaps most outrageously repulsive of all, ELLIOT ABRAMS, Assistant Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan and one of the main architects of the Iran-Contra scandal, who specialized in massacre denial and lying to Congress: absurdly, he is currently the National Security Council Senior Director for Democracy, Human Rights and International Operations.
If Team Bush merely swindled money from the public to finance the Military-Industrial Komplex and support a reactionary foreign policy of terror, it would be offensive enough, but instead, it has gone forward in a brash attack on constitutional liberties. Attorney General JOHN ASHCROFT and FBI Director ROBERT S. MUELLER III have pushed for a series of law changes that violate basic civil liberties and broaden the already frightening level of power to the federal police state. Most notable include expanded usage of Orwellian surveillance programs such as Echelon and Carnivore, along with increased authorization of wire taps, break-ins of house and the detainment of alleged suspects. Meanwhile, they have helped create the office of Homeland Security, whose director, TOM RIDGE, had good practice violating civil rights as Governor of Pennsylvania.
Where is the Senate, the supposed arm of cautious wisdom in the US legislature, in response to this overt attack onfundamental liberties? Unsurprising, they are joining the stampede with glee. Most notable is the complicity of arch-reactionary TRENT LOTT, the Senate Minority Leader, and supposed "moderate" Majority Leader TOM DASCHLE, who, in a sign of unity and bipartisanship, have joined forces to back the destructive economic and "anti-terror" plans of Team Bush. Of course, such bipartisanship against the American public has been a staple over the last eight years of Utah Senator ORRIN HATCH and California's DIANE FEINSTEIN, who have backed nearly every piece of legislation attacking civil liberties. (No surprise then the "Combating Terrorism Act of 2001" was their handwork once again, which catered to nearly every request on Ashcroft-Mueller's wish list.)
With the executive branch under coup, the legislature under eager servants, and the Supreme Court unwilling to do its job (as their Dred Scott-like decisions of the past year clearly shows) the only possible hope would be the so-called Fourth Estate, the mass media. This seems to be an even greater lost cause. Whether it is to please an administration that seems intent (under FCC Chairman MICHAEL POWELL, Colin's toad-like son) on selling out public airwaves to gigantic korporations at an even more obscene level achieved by Slick Willie, or merely ideological support to a war which benefits oligopolistic titans, big media has celebrated phony patriotism in a rush to cheerlead both big business and big government. The examples are too many to cite, but the telling fact is the unity of the top US media sources in selling the same message. Whether it be CNN under new Chairman WALTER ISAACSON in promoting Team Shrub propaganda (just as it became Bush Sr.'s mouthpiece during the Gulf War), or Fox News under ROGER AILES, who (following his work as a Nixon-Reagan-Bush hatchet man) has continued to spread the right-wing ideology favored by his boss Rupert Murdoch, the message of the country's biggest news sources has been practically the same. And, as Isaacson has openly courted Lott, Tom DeLay and other right-wing leaders and contemplated hiring Rush Limbaugh to counter The O'Reilly Factor, the similaritites between the two top news networks seems to be turning even greater despite the supposedly "liberal" and "conservative" spins they give.
Where are things heading? It doesn't look good. The actions of the White House, Pentagon, State Department, DOJ, FBI, Senante and Korporate Media should be expected, but ultimately the greatest culprit of the Shrub Military-Industrial Police State is the public itself. Authority only does what it can get away with. While sniveling in complacemency and fear as the BushMob stole an election, the American public had clearly set the bar low. Whether or not Team Bush was behind the 911 terror or not, the stage was set for what has followed. If this is a Reichstag, they appear to be ready to make the most of it. And as Americans cheer it on, they seem almost eager to seal their potential doom.
In any case, we salute the Shrub Military-Industrial Police State (and its supporters) as Beast of the Month. Congratulations, and keep up the great work, dudes!!!

Foreign Press Reveals Collin Powel Negotiated Afghanistan War Months Before Suicide Air Attacks: Motive is Oil Profits for Multinational War Partners
The BBC and an Indian news agency in seperate stories, one months before and one shortly after the suicide air attack on America, have presented the most horrendous picture to date regarding the true nature of the terror in NYC and elsewhere:

Those backing President Bush's request for a coalition had better make certain they are getting their fair share of the spoils of war, a war arranged months before the suicide air attacks against the US. A pact for war against the Taliban was made between the United States, CIS (Russia), Pakistan, and India to facilitate a Middle-East to S.E. Asia Oil Pipeline, which cannot take place with growing political and religious upheaval in the region at the hands of the Taliban. Iran is thought to be a covert member to the pact. The combat was initially slated for mid October, which would seem to account for warnings that preparing for war will take time.
The problem is that the ONLY logical pipeline route runs for nearly a thousand miles along the Afghanistan border with Iran and Pakistan, (largely so close as to be visible from the border. This route would seem to provide the US with the best incentive to date to cooperate with Iran by, in essence, competing with a proposed Chinese backed oil pipeline project serving the same oil fields in northern Iran and points south, preventing China from obtaining a defacto monopoly holder on oil supplies for SE Asia. The Chinese began negotiating that project in 1997, causing a great deal of consternation for the Clinton administration and major US oil companies who stood to gain little in the project.
However, the Taliban are fomenting both religious and political instability in the region between Iranian and Pakistani Shiites and Taliban Sunni Islamic sects, with notable success. This unrest makes impractical the financial investment and international cooperation required to construct the pipeline.
The solution was apparantly to be death warrants for both the Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, and capitalistic terrorist Osama bin Laden, who had apparantly grown too profitable and too strong for his former CIA masters and American business partners to control. Destruction of the Taliban was imperative, but political needs would not permit a simple solution.
For Pakistan and India, long bitter rivals, to partner would require only sufficient profits to make peace between them more palatable. However, Pakistan required a significant motive beyond profits to risk internal conflict due to its nation's divided religious and political landscape, all intertwined with allegiances to the Taliban. There needed to be an extremely irresistible reason for the nation's leadership to back/support military action against what their own citizens considered a virtual spiritual ally.
In like manner, Iran required an irresistible reason to publicly support with vocal blessings American interests in any such action, and at the same time, needed a way to salve bitter wounds between the two countries which would allow future joint financial ventures.
In similar manner, the United States needed a very powerful and irresistible reason to mobilize America into supporting such a war, a war which would be extremely difficult to prosecute, as the Soviet Union could testify of first hand, having found the Soviet- Afghanistan war to be their "Vietnam."
The logical solution which would indeed provide irresistible reasons for all concerned, would now seem to be the horrific terror campaign against the NYC and Washington DC by former CIA strong man, Osama bin Laden, who perhaps is still on the payroll after all. The question is, if the war was being secretely planned by the administration... a war which could not be sold to Americans without such a catastrophic event... then who really planned the 911 event?
The attack comes in the wake of revelations by author James Bamford in his book Body of Evidence of a secret plan for US military intelligence operatives to commit acts of terrorism against American targets... blow up buildings, shoot down civilian airliners, blow up American war ships, and assassinate American citizens... for political gain. Operation Northwoods was signed off by all five Joint Chiefs of Staff under the Kennedy administration as a way to foment public support for a war against Cuba, who would be blamed for the terrorist acts. Rejected sternly by President Kennedy, which may have contributed to reasons behind his assassination, this Reichtag fire approach to political gain may have been the model for September 11, shifting the blame this time to the Taliban homeland. What would make a more irresistible excuse for war?
In light of these revelations, American media needs to decide if it will continue to ignore truth and the principles of journalism for its preferred role as Fourth Estate PR spokesperson of government. Will they tell America these facts or hide what the rest of the world already knows through news agencies which have no such loyalties?
Will American politicians find themselves being asked by their constituents if they knew in advance of this death pact, and have the blood of innocents on their hands as coconspirators, or will they demand a full accounting of the facts before signing off on the blood lust boiling over as result of this war plot?

A former Pakistani diplomat has told the BBC that the US was planning military action against Osama Bin Laden and the Taleban even before last week's attacks.
Niaz Naik, a former Pakistani Foreign Secretary, was told by senior American officials in mid-July that military action against Afghanistan would go ahead by the middle of October.
Russian troops were on standby
Mr Naik said US officials told him of the plan at a UN-sponsored international contact group on Afghanistan which took place in Berlin.
Mr Naik told the BBC that at the meeting the US representatives told him that unless Bin Laden was handed over swiftly America would take military action to kill or capture both Bin Laden and the Taleban leader, Mullah Omar.
The wider objective, according to Mr Naik, would be to topple the Taleban regime and install a transitional government of moderate Afghans in its place - possibly under the leadership of the former Afghan King Zahir Shah.
Mr Naik was told that Washington would launch its operation from bases in Tajikistan, where American advisers were already in place.
Bin Laden would have been "killed or captured"
He was told that Uzbekistan would also participate in the operation and that 17,000 Russian troops were on standby.
Mr Naik was told that if the military action went ahead it would take place before the snows started falling in Afghanistan, by the middle of October at the latest.
He said that he was in no doubt that after the World Trade Center bombings this pre-existing US plan had been built upon and would be implemented within two or three weeks.
And he said it was doubtful that Washington would drop its plan even if Bin Laden were to be surrendered immediately by the Taleban.

India in anti-Taliban military plan India and Iran will "facilitate" the planned US-Russia hostilities against the Taliban. By Our Correspondent
26 June 2001: India and Iran will "facilitate" US and Russian plans for "limited military action" against the Taliban if the contemplated tough new economic sanctions don't bend Afghanistan's fundamentalist regime.
The Taliban controls 90 per cent of Afghanistan and is advancing northward along the Salang highway and preparing for a rear attack on the opposition Northern Alliance from Tajikistan-Afghanistan border positions.
Indian foreign secretary Chokila Iyer attended a crucial session of the second Indo-Russian joint working group on Afghanistan in Moscow amidst increase of Taliban's military activity near the Tajikistan border. And, Russia's Federal Security Bureau (the former KGB) chief Nicolai Patroshev is visiting Teheran this week in connection with Taliban's military build-up.
Indian officials say that India and Iran will only play the role of "facilitator" while the US and Russia will combat the Taliban from the front with the help of two Central Asian countries, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, to push Taliban lines back to the 1998 position 50 km away from Mazar-e-Sharief city in northern Afghanistan.
Military action will be the last option though it now seems scarcely avoidable with the UN banned from Taliban-controlled areas. The UN which adopted various means in the last four years to resolve the Afghan problem is now being suspected by the Taliban and refused entry into Taliban areas of the war-ravaged nation through a decree issued by Taliban chief Mullah Mohammad Omar last month.
Diplomats say that the anti-Taliban move followed a meeting between US Secretary of State Collin Powel and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and later between Powell and Indian foreign minister Jaswant Singh in Washington. Russia, Iran and India have also held a series of discussions and more diplomatic activity is expected.
The Northern Alliance led by ousted Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani and his military commander Ahmed Shah Masood have mustered Western support during a May 2001 visit to Dusseldorf, Germany.
The Taliban is using high-intensity rockets and Soviet-made tanks to attack Northern Alliance fighters in the Hindukush range with alleged Pakistani aid. But Northern Alliance fighters have acquired anti-tank missiles from a third country that was used in the fight near Bagram Air Base in early June. The Taliban lost 20 fighters and fled under intense attack.
Officials say that the Northern Alliance requires a "clean up" operation to reduce Taliban's war-fighting machinery to launch an attack against the Taliban advance to the Tajik-Afghan border. This "clean up" action is being planned by the US and Russia since the Taliban shows no "sign of reconciliation".
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will lead the ground attack with a strong military back up of the US and Russia. Vital Taliban installations and military assets will be targeted. India and Iran will provide logistic support. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already hinted of military action against the Taliban to CIS nation heads during a meeting in Moscow in early June.
India and Iran have been assisting the Northern Alliance and the Afghan people under their humanitarian programme since Taliban's ouster of the Rabbani government in 1996. The US needs Russian assistance because of Soviet knowledge of the Afghan terrain. The former Soviet Union intervened in Afghanistan in 1979 and withdrew in 1989.
Masood's strategic stronghold of Panjsher valley has been threatened by the advancing Taliban militia for the last three months. The Northern Alliance has stepped up its attack on Taliban troops who have brought the valley within artillery fire range.
Military planners say that if Taliban were not given a blow now it would slowly make inroads into the Panjsher valley. The fall of Panjsher will enable Taliban to control the remaining 10 per cent of Afghanistan in possession of the Northern Alliance.
Russia says it has evidence that the Taliban aims to create "liberated zones" all across Central Asia and Russia and links its Chechnya problem to the rise of Taliban fundamentalism. The US is directly hit by the anti-US thrust of Islamic groups who use Afghanistan as their base for terrorism and is demanding extradition of Osama Bin Laden to face trial in the embassy bombing case.
Such Central Asian countries as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan are threatened by the Taliban that is aiming to control their vast oil, gas and other resources by bringing Islamic fundamentalists into power. Now all the CIS nations are seeking assistance of Russia's Federal Border Guard Service to overcome the Taliban threat.
General Konstantin Trotsky, director of the border force, said in a newspaper interview, "We are watching the opposition of the Northern Alliance and the Taliban in Afghanistan very closely."
For its part, Shia Iran is reluctant to tolerate a Sunni militia regime on its border that gives Pakistan, a Sunni country and a sponsor of the Taliban, a "strategic sway" on considerable parts of the Iranian border. Iran is also affected by a Taliban-sponsored movement in Ispahan province where Sunnis have a sizable population.
Iran is also worried over the unending war effort of the Taliban to get supremacy in Afghanistan that is harming Iran's economic interests. India, Iran and Russia, for example, are working on a broad plan to supply oil and gas to south Asia and southeast Asian nations through India but instability in Afghanistan is posing a great threat to this effort.
Similarly, India is apprehensive about the increasing infiltration of Afghan-trained foreign mercenaries into Kashmir. Security agencies have reported that as many as 15,000 hardcore militants have received training in such places in Afghanistan as Khost, Jalalabad, Kabul and Kandahar since 1995. There are 55 terrorist training camps located in Afghanistan that are funded and aided by Islamic fundamentalists to carry out attacks against non-Islamic nations.
The UN had sent a 12-member delegation to India in the first week of May to assess the feasibility of tough economic sanctions against Taliban. The same delegation met General Pervez Musharraf to convince him about the importance of Pakistani cooperation. The UN believes that the sanctions can be only as tough as Pakistan desires.
India's official position is for a "peaceful and lasting solution" to the Afghan problem. But it strongly advocates strict economic sanctions against Taliban and is also not averse to a "limited military action" to weaken it.
India plans to raise the Afghanistan issue in the forthcoming G-8 summit in Geneva in mid-July.
